I was about to say the same thing, but you did it a lot better. And someone just modded up Mr. Clueless GP! There are a couple of comments around here just begging for moderation by someone with a clue. Damn, I wish I still had mod points, but I spent them all on the Blizzcon story.

Noncompliance with the terms of the license makes copying and distributing the code copyright infringement, which is illegal.

That's wishful thinking; cf Blizzard v. Bnetd. Time and time again we'll bitch and moan about corporate abuse, but as soon as those same corporations make something we like, it's time to rave about how great it is.
from the city that used to have (and still might, from what it sounds like) the highest murder rate in the nation by far? I hope not to sound insensitive, but if you ask me, it's always been a pretty shitty place. I hope that if they rebuild something better will end up there.
Maybe you have the right to keep a copy, but you don't necessarily have the right to distribute that copy, and that's what's really at stake here. The Internet Archive is not merely storing a copy of the published page; they're also distributing it. Maybe it's fair use, maybe not, the court will decide. But I don't like their chances. It was only a matter of time before someone called them on it.
Do most DNS server operators really use the root hints file that comes with BIND? I always downloaded the InterNIC version, that site being administered by ICANN on behalf of the DoC.
This is a totally ridiculous argument to be having. Anyone who knows the slightest thing about copyright law would know that there are exceptions. You're just looking for something to bitch about like so many other posters on Slashdot.
You didn't tell me anything I didn't already know. Of course there are exceptions. I'm sorry I didn't find every single exception in existence and post them. It was just a generalization, deal with it.
California is officially trying to build high-speed rail. Unfortunately a little thing called a budget crisis came along because the Legislature couldn't control its spending during the bubble. But work is still underway, and hopefully something will come out of it. Last I heard, they were still wrangling over the exact route it's to take.
Why, yes, it IS sustainable. I'm glad you asked. I admit energy could be an issue, but certainly not food. When the oil runs out, it would be a short-term problem, but we could easily use nuclear (fission) and renewable energy until fusion is a viable source. The reason it hasn't already been done is purely economic, not because doing it would be much of a technological challenge.
We're NOT doing either of those things in the first place, that's the point. Sure, we could do better, but there's no reason that what we're doing is not sustainable in the long term. The U.S. could easily support a population an order of magnitude higher than what it is now.
Overpopulation is nonexistent as a problem in the developed world. If anything, the problem is going to be UNDERpopulation, especially for Europe with its ever-declining birthrates and strict immigration policies. If hibernation ever becomes possible there's not going to be a whole lot of people going into it in the poorest developing areas.
Mod me down all you want, stupid moderators, but I'm not the one who's lying about it being a dupe article. Yet my post has a lower score? That's ridiculous.
The problem in this case is not the editors posting dupes, it's you idiots not even bothering to read the STORIES. The first one's about the device itself. The second one is about measuring the smallest mass ever with the device. I can understand not reading the articles, but not reading the stories, how lazy can you get? You just want something to complain about.
You're right, I DON'T like them. They are, by definition, special interests. What else am I supposed to call them? At least I actually cited a specific instance of what the Governator is (or isn't, in this case) doing, unlike your post which is a far worse abuse of political rhetoric than mine. No matter which groups "own" him, at least those groups' interests don't involve taking away my rights or stealing and wasting more of my money. I presume it's a good thing YOUR candidate isn't in office.
Sorry, dude, but I live in California and Schwarzenegger is the best governer ever as far as I'm concerned. He's the only politician, with the possible exception of John McCain, willing to stand up to special interests and not steal more of the people's money with which to wipe his ass, the favorite pasttime of Democrats in the California Legislature. It's the people who vote for things like borrowing hundreds of millions of dollars to waste when the state is ALREADY in a budget crisis who worry me.

Now, I am off to see the movie...

We got the joke; it just wasn't funny.

That's it, I'm switching to OS X. As long as the guy doesn't come with them.
And sibling poster AC #12976758, you need to get out more.

If the root server operators didn't listen to ICANN, they probably wouldn't be root server operators for very much longer.
Doesn't ICANN already have de facto control of DNS anyway? I don't hear of much Department of Commerce interference with its operation.

Yes, it is copyright infringment. The copyright owner has the exclusive rights to copy and distribute the work among others.
United States Code Title 17 Chapter 1 Section 106
It looks like a giant mascara applicator.

And goddamn it, I spelled "governor" wrong. Sorry. At least I got "Schwarzenegger" right.

No, monopolies aren't illegal in the U.S. Some monopolies engage in behavior which is illegal.
