To be honest, I'd rather grow slowly than go public.
Going public is eeevil. To be honest, I think the problem with the 'dot com' era was that too many people jumped on the bandwagon with stupid ideas. The bank thought "LET'S FINANCE THAT!" and gave them loads of money which they promptly spent on a fast car and a big appartment, then the figures came through in a few months and they realised they'd got no cashflow...
I open a store and sell a million of "whatever" I get paid for a million of them, hence larger profits. A busy restaurant makes more money. I sell more books I make more money. I sell more software, or maybe if I am an accountant, my services are in demand.....the more people who want what I have to offer the more I make. The more I am rewarded.
To be honest, I have no problem with you working to make a fortune:)
It's these manufactured bands that the UK scene is rife with at the minute, they don't write their own songs, they don't really perform live and they're as replacable as a ink cartridge. Why the hell should they be paid millions of pounds for standing on a stage when there are more important people such as police, doctors and fire who get paid a hell of a lot less?
The majority of bands I listen to are live and local , basically just because that's the kind of music that I like and I like feeling the whole atmosphere of going to a gig. I'm not talking a pop gig where they real off a ton of songs, dance and have pyrotechnics. I'm talking where the band get to know the audience, get them to buy drinks etc;)
It just annoys me when the pop stars whinge because they're not getting enough money. Oh, come off it. You have more money than I'm likely to make in the next ten years!
Sorry, but it really gets to me when a "band" only does their stuff for the money.
I know plenty of bands that just thrive to hear a live audience, no, they're not big and they don't have a flash Porsche but they enjoy what they do and get to pay the bills.
All pirating means is that people that expect that when they get into music that their life is sorted and they can go round smashing up hotel rooms and stuff.
Bah! They don't even usually write their own songs.
2. "If you're not up on your Star Trek, you can forget about getting or keeping a geek dude." At this point, they are just propogating stereotypes. I've watched Star Trek in my day, but not to extremes, and most of my geek friends aren't extremely into it either. Regardless, we aren't so closed-minded that being a ST:TNG fanatic is on our list of requirements of a women.
I'm a geek and my girlfriend (who is not a geek by a longshot:p) knows more about Star Trek than me through her brother watching it. I've never really been a 'Sci-fi' geek. I like Sci-fi but I'm not really a big fan. Nor am I a fan of Anime.
Stereotyping isn't a good thing. No one fits a mould. For example we're not like a normal couple, but that's what makes us great and so loving:)
True we have argues over the best way to wash up and stuff, but it leads to an exciting life.
Plus this should cheer all geeks up. GEEKS ARE THE BEST IN BED. It's official;)
(According to some sites this is because of the amount of p0rn we read (do we?!) so we're up on it.
The big telco and cable provider (they supply my phone, cable connection and digital cable service;)) company hit the bottom after spending billions recruting new customers and basically being cheap to use.
They now have the most broadband subscribers in the UK and have just emerged from Chapter 11.
Or maybe it's because they are providing a service to you?
Why should they provide it for free!? You're collecting listings from them, using their bandwidth, pulling data that they have to collect and so and so forth.. But hey, they should give it away for free, 'cause that would make us lots of money.
The true story is that they sell a $350 machine for $100 and take the $250 in fees over the years instead.
Which is exactly how people can give away 'free' mobile phones, they tie you down to a 12 month contract of £13 a year to pay for your £200 phone that they gave away free. I've absolutely no problem with that at all. We win, they win.
I think the problem with some people on here is that they've seen Open Source and they now expect EVERYTHING to be free. It just doesn't happen like that I'm afraid, people need to earn a living.
Off-topic, I pay £10/year to DigiGuide for their EPG (computer not PVR/TV.) Yet I could get them for free in papers or by getting a cracked version. But if no one pays they go out of business and the world falls apart (!)
I imagine he was using his laptop or something. Not many cybercafés will let you do anything other than port 80, single web browser window from what I've seen.
I imagine he prolly had a word with the owners of the café, or maybe they had wireless.
Wanted: Senior System Administrator.
Start date: Immediatelly.
Requirements: Unix and Windows experience a must. Must have managed 100 users or more. Hands NOT required.
Java with IE worked out of the box for me, as did Flash (but then again it did also under *nix;)) it also worked out of the box with Opera (my browser of choice under both OS's.)
I'm talking about plugins where they *only* have an IE version, MSN Chat etc..
It's not that bad for the average office user under Linux, there's OO which serves nice as a Office replacement.
However, when you move to standard home user then yeh, it sucks because he can't play the games all his friends are, or he can't view the latest web pages (I know Moz is standards compliant, but a lot of sites aren't.) or he can't open the attatchment sent by his brother of some pointless sort because he doesn't have the viewer. etc.
I see your point, I really do. But, then again, I don't think Linux should become mainstream.
No, enjoying porn together is good and self satisfaction is also healthy.
I just find too many people are way too obsessed.
Why the hell would you want that much porn? In fact why do they want porn? Imagination people, or heaven forbid... a boy/girlfriend?!
IN RUSSIA DSL LOGS ONTO YOU.
;)
I think that's what he was getting at

But then agian, that would be in a fair world
Excuse the ranting
There's a difference between making a buck and making a hell of a lot of buck.
I think the money paid to so-called 'artists' could be much better spent.
Who the hell said I was pirating any music?
;)

Was waiting for someone to mention abandoned tube stations, they interest me.

It does happen.
There is a Linux retail?
Because they can?

We're all stuck on the famous.
1. Make EPGs free.
2. ???
3. Profit!

Who knows? Who cares?
But this is a tech site read by prolly 50% sys admins (and not cops) ;)
The other 50% are prolly kids that want to grow up and be like us, God forbid! So it's just giving them an insight into what we do. Y'know?
I'm sure in the press for the lunch lady industry they have 'In the trenches.. Life as a dinner lady"!
Well, it could happen.
Probably not as funny as.

Techie's may not use them, but normal people do.

Ummm, does El'Reg usually get /.'ed?
It is a fairly popular site on it's own, y'know?
Ahhh, server seems a bit slow too... Unless it's just me on this side of the pond :p
