I'm not sure I *want* guns, ever. I mean, let's just look at America where everyone is armed and shootings are way above what they are in the UK! If I was to have a gun, so would the thieves, the cops and the risk of being shot and killed would replace the risk of being beaten up on a night out. Great.

  3. Re:Linux 8.0?!? on Google to Release Firefox Toolbar · · Score: 3, Insightful

Whilst I agree that seems like a stupid mistake to make. Why not just put "Linux with Firefox 1.0.4" as that would surely have all the right software? But I think this shows one of the underlying problems of why it's hard to release anything to the Linux community. I use Linux (both Ubuntu and SuSE) which again have completely different version numbers ubuntu's 5.04 is much better than SuSE's v5 (if they had one!) So how are people supposed to release system requirements? Should they list each distro and it's version numbers, should they list each dependency and it's version number? Do many people actually know what version of glibc they have without looking? Or in fact which kernel? I don't. I think until people can release software that just works for Linux. i.e. you can get it from download.com or from the authors page and you just run an installer and it's all setup icons and all. Whilst I like repos the problem is is that you have to wait for people to build a package for your distro and upload it before you can install it. This can be weeks later than when the actual product was released and sometimes they contain bugfixes that we want now. For example Kopete's MSN connectivity problems. Before you say, well compile it and it'll be for your machine. I hate compiling, it's complicated and seems a awkard way of doing something. And many people are like that, especially my girlfriend who uses SuSE, she just wants to click in Yast and have the program ready.

So I'm gonna try the Opera one just to see whether it's as good as Opera stuff usually is.

At the end of the day, they have a faithful following from providing something that people are prepared to pay for so they must be doing something right. And then they also have a lot of commercial users embedding them and paying license fees etc.

Companies wont develop Linux native apps if there isn't the market for them... i.e. Money.

The problem with the open source movement is that people are used to (and I include myself in this) using software for free. Most people will either use a free alternative or just copy it, crack it etc.

There just wouldn't be the market. Until there is we're not going to see Linux native apps of big software appear.

    IMHO.

Version 5 if you want the Winamp library and new skin support.

I'd say the complete opposite. WinAmp has (IMHO - obviously) *the* best UI of any music player around. It has the playlist, the buttons, a scrolly text bit to show the song and that was it. Everything else was hidden away. It felt like a little side app, which is how I like my media players, something in the background, not a full blown full screen app. And it hid away neatly.

And the best thing? It had keyboard shortcuts. For someone that rarely uses the mouse that's what got it for me.

I've no need for a successor. Winamp 2.9 or 5 is fine for me.

The sensors have nothing to do with the red lights. They usually only work during the night (I drive to work at 4AM and will find that even though I go through approximately 20 sets of lights on my way, all of them (apart from 2 which have no sensors) will change to green as I approach, this is not through flashing my lights. It's just based on the fact that no cars are on the road so if a car approaches it will switch the lights to green for that car. After all, what is the point of him/her sitting there for 30 seconds for the traffic lights to change? Ambulances, police and fire vehicles are let through on priority by people that actually change the traffic light sequence. Remotely at the little traffic light changing office (not it's real name, obviously) For example if it's rush hour and an ambulance really needs to get along a road. They will radio back and an operator will work out a way to clear the traffic in front of it along it's route as quick as possible, this can be through changing the sequence of the lights for it's route or deploying police patrols to escort it.
