I once was replacing an athtlon 2100+ and acidently dropped it into a large glop of artic silver (the stupid tube fell apart on me and it got freaking everywhere)
the pins were absolutley lousey with the stuff...i proceded to get a tub of water put some soap in it and dropped the processor in...scrubbed the pins with a toothbrush and dried it out...popped it in a half hour later and PRESTO
i also followed the game from the day that the website went live...
i watched as they posted awesome ideas and talked about what sounded like a freaking sweet game...then the suits came in and fired the people with vision and "dumbed" the game down till there was nothing left...all of us on the message boards perdicted this was exactly what would happen...
I wonder if hollywood will ever wake up to the fact that sub-cultures and small fanbases can have nearly the same income potential as the large dis-intrested masses.
I for one am a HUGE firefly fan...i was skeptical of the show at first..western in space, BAH... but after watching the show i was instantly hooked...the subtle char interactions and the real depth they are given makes for an incredible watch.
Wich brings me to my point...i love this show so much i would...no question...pay 150$ a year for a dvd set with the entire season on it, and I dont think i'm the only one out there that feels this way. I have no problem paying for somthing i enjoy...
Producing a high quality show like firefly and bringin it straight to dvd would definetly be risky...but i really belive it could pay off in the long run..based on the sales of the 1st season compilation we are talking multi millions in revenue.
"But the worst part of it is, you turn into, like, that guy. You know, that guy who always grumbles about being ahead of the trend. The "I was listening to them when they were indie and they suck now" guy and everyone thinks YOU'RE the poser."
I was in the beta for E&B and i just wasn't in the least bit impressed. They took the route that alot of deveolpers did in trying to copy the sucsess of EQ and yet dumb it down to apeal to the masses.
The game lacked any real content or interaction, it could have made a decent single player game but as an MMORPG it really lacked.
Now EVE-Online...that is one excelent game...i've been playing now for 2 months and its steadily growing...they hold the worlds record in players in one world enviroment...i think its like 7,800 or so... excelent game with a wonderful complex enviroment!
i've played nearly every MMORPG on the market and i can tell you that RPG's are more than just "brain dead" games. In everquest me and a friend of mine would routinley kill mobs that other people couldnt kill 4 levels higher than us. RPG's are as much about thought out strategy as any other games, just on a slower time scale. Games like EVE-online are a perfect example...skill levels are VERY important, but this weekend i(only been playing for 1 month) was in a Tournimant inside my corperation in-game and was able to almost kill a veteran player who has played for 8-9 months and has almost all his combat skills maxed, just by using strategy.
In High school i read an excelent Science fact article in the Analogue that talked about magnetic solar sails...
the concept is basically you unfurl a big coil of superconducting wire around the ship and charge it with a large power source and create a giant electro magnet...the field then intereacts with the Solar Wind. The charged ions and particles impact the field and ipart momentum. THe best was the author described how one could enter and leave a planet's gravity well with a strong enough magnetic field.
very interesting stuff

its unbelievable to me that people would be so quick to give up what has made this country great. What the heroes of WW1 and WW2 fought so bravely for...freedom.
Land of the free, home of the brave my butt...this country is full of sniveling cowards who, at the first sign of danger, turn over what thousands have lain down their lives for. If the government ever outlaws knowledge, then i my friends will remain an outlaw, a new type of outlaw... THE GEEK OUTLAW!!! *smiles*
I will never relinquish my basic freedoms, not even when looking down the wrong end of a gun.
INFORMATION WANTS TO BE FREE!!!!
