All developers are not created equal. That is a given.
Your second point is penny wise and pound foolish. If that kid is writing something that you are going to use for a few weeks and then discard, then he should just hack stuff together as quick as possible. Otherwise your approach builds a house of cards. 'Slapping' together code is a bad idea. Sorry if that hurts your feelings, but it has been proven for years. Please read some books on code lifecycle and long terms costs of supporting code and cost of fixing crap 'slapped together' code over doing it right the first time.
So each of your points, based on your very limited specialized example, which fails to address true coding, which provides roi. Cause I'm not sure that little db interface that only you use is really a ROI item.
1. He may hold hands cause he needs help to do it right, or possibly to save time cause he's not real good at jdbc.
2. documenting - If it's only a small piece of db code that only you use, he can probably document it in about 1 hour. Be real nice if he gets hit by a bus, hmmm?
3. source code control - He can do it in 3 days, but 2 days into the project his PC hard drive explodes. You didn't have CVS/SVN/Something set up by default that all people use without though. You lose.
So, your limited example sucked. Your theory on ROI is proven wrong by more technical papers than I can shake a fist at. A more real example is you want that crappy db access stuff in 3 days. He gets it in 5 but it is reusable, well written, stored in sccs and has a nice 2 page document stored with it.
I generally just try to post supportive arguments, but... You sir are a complete idiot! Thanks for your psychological profile of the muslim religion. They're insecure in their beliefs? Are you insane? They pray 5 (?) times, a day? They are raised to revere mohamad. This is like you insulting their mother, sister, dead grandmother, best friend and everything they hold dear to their heart.
You are also an idiot because you don't understand that there are different cultures in this world. Perhaps rather than looking at them through your eyes, you look at what those cartoons would mean to a person that was raised to revere god above all else and then has to deal with some hip western journalist making a joke about that.
And to counter your counter argment: No, I do not agree that violence is the correct reaction. I do not support terrorism. But take a look at the last 100 years of their history, from the british occupation, to foreign businesses paying off their government, etc...
Oooh, diatribe. And just one more point. Western Christian fundamentalism is on the rise. And that scares me alot more than the muslims. And just one more point, with regards to the war on terrorism. Muslims have killed 5k (approx) americans. We've killed more than 100K of them in the last few years and if you go back 100 years, the numbers are much worse.
yes I do. If I want to buy a $75 router and open it up and change the software and teach it to make coffee, well I paid for it. All analogies are suspect but... if I buy a car and want to turbo charge it, or put in an alarm system or put in airshocks fine.
And to stop your next argument: I could make my PC do the same things as this router, DDOS attack, etc... so locking down the $75 router is not protecting me or you from terrorism.
Just a quick question. Does this mean that device manufacturers that make (I don't know) routers using linux kernel could DRM their routers so that you can't hack them anymore? There seems to be a community out there that likes to rebuild the software on these devices to make them better. With DRM these coders would be out of luck?
What it takes to get MS and all the virus checking stuff out of my house:
1. web browser - ready 2. itunes (my wife is an addict) - Not sure if this works via WINE. But works on MAC 3. WOW (my kids are addicts) - check 4. wordprocessor, spreadsheet (Open Office, close...) - check
That is all my family needs.
I've recently switched to MAC. So I can honestly say that Microsoft is barely holding on to the other 3 desktops in my house. Apple or Linux, it's pretty much a done deal. As each piece of hardware wears out, it's being replaced by non-MS at this point.
Are you like 15 years old or something? They were polite. They probably had a policy. They politely paid him and let him go. There is nothing unethical about that. He wasn't treated like a criminal, people weren't looking over his shoulder. Are you injecting personal experiences into his story? I would love to be walked out when I gave two weeks notice. The only thing I'd want would be a few hours to say goodbye to some friends at the company.
What a stupid argument? the IPOD is way ovepriced. In 1970 cars cost $1000. I can think of tons of products that are overpriced. So I should steal a car and an ipod?
Oh wait, but this is just bits it's not steel or plastic. It should be cheaper. I think CDs are overpriced. I buy them used. Problem solved.
Bullshit on oracle. we have support, yes we pay for it. When our data was corrupted we spent 8 hours on the phone with oracle support and they got it back for us. When we find a bug, we get a patch quickly or a work around.
Hmmm, ah, well, this is a very important issue to our country. I am going to appoint a council of experts to study the SCO lawsuit and come up with my viewpoint on this very important issue. Because Americans want to be free, blather blather blather...
Two weeks later: The president has appointed a special committee to study the SCO issue and the issue on copyrights. He carefully chose a panel of impartial experts including, Darl McBride, Jack Velenti, Hilary Rosen and other notables.
No big deal. Yahoo and Aol will just have their browser display a little pop-up showing the typing status rather than showing it on the bottom status line of their dialog.:)
Perhaps we should pay for Gartner to do a report on this 'blind pig' phenomenon and determine whether our PHB's should take this into account when calculating TCO and ROI.
1. Something happens, people revolt. 2. A new government is started. At that point things are as good as they're gonna get in that country (freedom wise). 3. From that point on, the government gets more and more corrupt until 4.Go to 1.
OK, i'll let most of this post go, but one piece of bullshit I've been seeing over and over again is pissing me off. Do you really think that all the senators want to go to war?! Hell no! But these people are masters of self interest first and foremost and a vote against war, a vote against Patriot ACT I-XXVI, is political suicide! Any democrat that comes out against this patriotic bullshit commits instant political suicide. That's 20 points against the conscientous objector in the next election. Geez, then we could have 80 republicans in the damned senate!
I'll bet you if they did a secret poll, over 50% of the senators would say the Patriot act sux and we shouldn't go to war. Sheesh, I actually feel sorry for a few of these people, because they are trapped into waving the flag and putting their hand on the bible every week.
There is one overwhelming reason to vote Democrat. Some years ago the Republican party was hijacked by the religious right. These crazy people believe their god is the only god and that anybody who doesn't worship the Christian God needs to be saved, even if its necessary to kill people in order to save them.
I watch these crazy religious nuts on the tv, out of morbid curiosity and they frighten me more than the islamists, truth be told. This is the reason I'd vote for a philandering lying stupid democrat over any republican that ran for office. I don't necessarily know who 'controls' the democrat, but I know who the republican pays homage to.
Hmm, their internal developers had unlicensed copies of sqlserver installed on their systems? Hmm, looks like somebody needs a visit from the piracy police.
Your whole 'taking money away from worthwhile charities' argument is total crap. I don't, at the beginning of the year, decide to donate 1% of my income. I don't earmark $1000 and decide to split it among charities. I see something I want, and I buy it. I gave a few bucks to PA, $100 to EFF. And then my wife donates to animal organizations (also evil charities as they only help animals not people, right?).
Your whole argument that gnome is taking away from charities is all BS! They aren't. Your view on basic human nature is skewed to support your argument. I was never going to give to your pet charity in the first place, so it has lost no support because of Gnome
And your statement that gnome and other OS projects shouldn't be charities may have some merit, because they aren't what one thinks of in terms of traditional charities, but I and others think they are worthwhile and may some day help in a small way to make the world a better place.
I read all the original Dune series, and agree that the later ones couldn't hold up to the earlier part of the series. But these prequels are of really poor quality IMHO. The various plots the characters contrive are really shallow. The Bene Gesserit are now psychic super women and the twists are pretty obvious and shallow.
They have a great universe, but neither of them is up to writing in it. It just gives me the feel of a couple of amateurs trying to be clever. They should stick to writing adventure storeis or some such. They can't handle the complexity Dune deserves.
Wow, that is some piece of work you did. I hope you submitted your script to the bug fix folks so they can include it in the next release. Why fix something when you can create a POS kludge to get your work done. Nothing like giving back to the community. Sarcasm mode off
Well, I worked for a company that wasn't too strong financially, and when we sold our product to a customer, they had it written in the contract that we had to basically place our source code and stuff in escrow and if we went bankrupt, they could access it.
But do you really think MS is going to go bankrupt and leave the millions of.DOC documents unreadable by all?:)
Let me see if I've got this straight. The government is operating in secret because it uses MS word? Sadly, I have a good idea of how the governement operates, and the fact that they use proprietary software like Office doesn't worry me nearly as much as other details.
Your attempt to link the.DOC format with secrecy and clandestine secret shadowy crimes is laughable.
1. O'Reilly has it 100% right. 2. Michael is an idiot. 3. Your position makes no sense.
All developers are not created equal. That is a given.

I fire you and give him your job.

Yes, MS provide no support. Oracle actually does.
Somehow, someway, I just know Microsoft is behind this!!!!! :)
Just to even things out: What would Bush say?

Ah, but you don't understand. MS's patent uses xml! That's makes it sufficiently different from all previous desktop pagers. :)

Neal, if I read your post right, you claim you don't use the letter 'p' in emails? This is the first grammar flame post!!!!
Right, you can be either a greedy bastard or a christian right winged religious zealot and belong to the republican party. :)
