Good Business Decision?
Look at the market:
WII - No Linux - Targetted by home brew and warez scene -- CRACKED
XBOX360 - No Linux - Targetted by home brew and warez scene -- CRACKED
PS3 - Linux - Only targetted by warez scene - Not cracked
If this decision motivates a joint cracking effort then they kiss millions of dollars in game revenue good bye.
All because they were to cheap to pay a developer to maintain drivers ?
Yeah, I don't know where they got there numbers from. But I was apart of the handful.... Without any information about the "virus detection" at the time, I took the only safe path I could... Doing a full backup and reinstalling Windows and Linux. Wasted an entire day, thanks kasperkey:(
Sony had very clear motives on this one, they want to stop homebrew and custom firmwares.
By releasing the slim it gives people an incentive to buy it (new features),
it also forces (in a nice way) retailers to sell off their old PSP fat stocks.
And its worked pretty good in some areas, the new PSP has made it harder to run homebrew (by blocking the 1.5 Firmware) its also reminded the market that the PSP is out there.
On the down side for Sony the custom firmware runs happily allowing backups to be played.
I wouldnt be surprised if other manufacturers use "Slim" models primarily to "fix" their product
Sounds like my old HP Deskjet 810, the last of the build-to-last-a-while printers. Cartridges are on there 5th or so refill, running very nicely. (one of the last non crippled HP printers)
Photo printing sux, but i take my photos down and get them printed professionally for 15-25c AU. The photo's last, the quality is unmatched in home printers and you can choose glossy or matt finish. Sure beats paying $1 for an inferior print and supporting crippled products!
The reference "Red Hat Linux" can covers around 4 gig of compressed libraries, applications, daemons, around 4 different desktops. "Windows" is refering to what? The entire suite of microsoft products ? No... Its referring to XP - the equivalent of the linux kernel, xwindows, 1 desktop, samba and little else!
If they compared that subset of a Red Hat installation (or any distro really for that matter) Now those results would be interesting.
Thats argument is so old school.
Steam allows world wide release on the same day.
You can pre-load the game and its decrypted when you license it and its been relseased.
No leaking during production issues.
Its not a perfect system but it allows you to buy new games for $25US and not have them leaked.
and the game can still be sold in a shop, but at least theres a CHEAP option, and a fast option.
I've been working with it solidly recently and have to say it has some good points.
- It has some really neat scalability using its Grid technology. All you need to do is swip the trusty gold credit card.
- It has got XML tables which are very powerful and allow you to use the power of sql to query xml without extracting all the data out.
- Theres inbuilt apache with php support pre-built
- HTMLDB now known as Oracle Application Express is a free bonus excellent for building in house stuff and maintance systems in very little time.
- Integrated J2EE support
There are lots of others good things about oracle It has alot to offer.
I recommend it as far as the Database server and the companion (apache/php/oracle application express)
All the 'infrastructure services stuff' may be good when oracle them selves understand it:)
All of this assumes that the internet is an appropriate medium for children.
Its not. So lets not turn the Internet into a baby sitter.
I'm all for a white listed kiddy ISP service.
Even then its only for supervised educational purposes.
As for Mr Beastly... he's just worked out this idea of censornet is an old idea popular amongst luddites that might win votes. It means there struggling really hard to find an idea for an election campaign.... and obviously hasnt got a clue.
Stands to reason, you have an anti-terrorism department which has nothing to do with stopping terrorism.
Why not investigate perfectly normal people which also have nothing to do with terrorism!
Just like the greatest threat to freedom in the USA is not terrorism, its Bush.
Yeah they are.
Stop into my ebay store 'ToadLickers' buy yourself a box of em.
Minimum order is 1000. Delivery is free as they self deliver via genetically enhanced legs!
Imagine some one films some terrorist training activity using one of these super desirable DRM crippled video cameras with the do-not-broadcast switch on. The camera breaks... The content could becomes useless...
Lots of people die....
But it was worth it... the MIAA made an extra million dollars profit that year and the executives could afford to refit out their private jets.
The MIAA/RIAA want to label the general public as pirates and 'supporters of terrorism'... but perhaps the technology their trying to force on us will end up supporting terrorism instead!
Hmmm so many patents based around patenting pre-existing technologies... If some one can find a way to patent stupidity and charge loyalties, they will be rich beyond their wildest dreams and perhaps encourage more people to think.
Otherwise we can clone the inventor of firing x-rays at glass (CRT's) and make a fortune that way before the technology becomes obsolete.

Are you assuming that the majority Christians back ACL / Family First Policy Ideas ?
Thats just going into the reactor.
Then you have to put the extremely toxic radioactive waste into specially made containers.
Transport it a long way to a dumping ground. Which had to be mined out specially for this waste.
Nothing quite like "clean" "green" "carbon free" nuclear power is there!

.. will it run as good as 7.04 currently does on laptops ?

(laptops with ATI x series cards currently broken)
Hypnotism might work. Watch my finger... your eye lids are getting heavy..... you want to buy a PS/3...cos no one else does

Since when did Slashbot become posting ground for groundless mindless rants like this one?

Isnt it more concerning that the latest post is the least news worthy event of 2006... What ever happened to "Stuff that matters." ?

Food for thought!
I watched a classical guitar playing robot about 20 years ago! Where have you been?
Possibly.. but sending Alston to Iraq would be more satisfying http://www.gopetition.com/
I think we maybe we should submit an online petitio n suggesting 2 courses of action:
1) Drop the unfair tax.
2) Ensure that it gives us the right to have mp3s in any form (Hard drive, mp3 player, cdr, dvdr)
Failing that...
All chip in for a one way plane ticket to Baghdad for Senator Alston. (He is Australia's Technology Minister for those who don't know)
