    In many organizations, once you've paid for the device it's free. You have a few guys running around doing a reinstall when the hard drive dies or whatever, but they'll be doing that sort of thing anyway, and they're paid anyway. I don't agree that they magically get more expensive as time goes on. It's not like they are cars which require expensive repairs all the time. At some point a PC will cost more than it's worth to repair, but that's the point you chuck it and get a new one, and even then you can harvest parts as spares. That's why so many companies (and individuals) have XP machines (and why they'll be on Windows 7 in ten years time). It's a crazy waste of money to upgrade when for most people there is no advantage whatsoever.

    No, it was always just you choosing for-profit company A over for-profit company B; perhaps because of a logo or shitty free router or something.

    I'd rather companies didn't discriminate, but it's hard to come up with a compelling argument for why they should be legally forbidden from doing so. As long as it's out in the open, take your pick and sign up.

    Bad analogy. The difference between static and moving, or black and white and colour is vast. HD vs 4k is nothing. Your house is littered with 3D tvs you no longer watch, right? No doubt when 4.5k comes out that'll be a huge breakthrough you'll be spending $$$ on too? You want to watch those shitty companies - they're only after your money!

    Because we love formats which are impossible to convert into any other format; which require complicated, ugly tools to perform even basic formatting, and because we desperately need a format which essentially displays graphics and text to require weekly updates to remove the latest batch of exploits.

    "Believes" don't require citations. He's not quoting anyone else; he's stating his opinion. If someone says that their microwave oven killed their dog, who was in the garden, and you say that you don't believe that the microwave was the cause, you would be unable to produce a citation (as it was you making the claim), nor would the onus be on you to do so.

    The lack of patches mean all these old boxes get taken out; there'll be no need to write web apps which run on them as they'll be too busy serving up DDOS/malware to people using slightly more recent versions of Windows!
