how big is an itunes install these days? 20MB? seems like every couple of months i'm getting forced to upgrade: and guess what: it doesn't usually mean i'm getting *more* features...
but most services can do this. you can choose who to run them as. if you've got problems with this, try SRVANY.EXE off the reskit, which lets you run any app as a service as the user of your choice on boot. a service wouldn't be much use if it had to run when a user was logged in, would it?
Here's what I want to know... why is it that so often Window's users can't spell? It's "T H I E R" not "there."
Someone didn't preview THEIR post, did they?
you absolute fucking liar. "MS does include some basic drivers" - try installing XP SP2 on a few PCs. Want to put a bet on how many bits of hardware it won't correctly recognise? It won't be very many in the VAST majority of cases. You can bash MS all you want but when it comes to hardware support in its OS right out of the box, you can't beat them. Native sata support on the bootcd? check. Drivers for all common chipsets, including pretty non-mainstream stuff like nforce2 and newer? Check. If you install XP SP2 on a PC made a year ago, chances are extremely high you won't need any drivers at all.
"Vendor-written drivers have a very poor record". Sure. I'd much prefer my drivers to be written by someone who has time on his hands rather than the actual MANUFACTURER OF THAT HARDWARE.
Whether you're pro or anti MS, you've got to realise the parent poster was absolute bullshit. FUD, plain and simple.
"What good is it as an OS if you can't add various hardware" - find me an OS with better support for third party hardware right out of the box and I'll kiss you on the ring, you fucknut.
All OSs have their pluses and minuses, but one thing Linux and the Mac aren't renowned for is compatibility with loads of hardware....
Mod me up, you fvckers!
...for about 50p a shot you can ring 2580 from your mobile, hold your phone near the speaker, wait 10 seconds and hang up. you'll get a text message back a minute later with full details of the tune. ok, it's expensive, but it's *cool*.
see http:///www.shazam.com for details...
..."you also take a completely anally-retentive attitude to anything you see written on a computer screen, and have an irrestisible compulsion to comment on it, despite your comment being completely surplus to requirements"
balls. it's like webmail: if you've got the browser that does the cool stuff, it displays complete with bells and whistles. if you just use IE, it works, but you get a basic GUI. result: more push to firefox and other browsers.....
consider the google portfolio. It's machine-independent (bar a few niggles like the google deskbar, but concentrate on the web stuff). Email? Check. Usenet/web groups? Check. Contacts? Check. Add a basic wordprocessor and a few niceties like calendaring etc and you can give joesixpack@gmail.com just about everything he'd need via a web interface from any PC he sits at.
Web apps are pretty nice these days: use a browser that supports XUL like Firefox and it's not dissimilar to a real, locally installed app. And who's partnering with Firefox....?
yes, of course. putting a SINGLE FREAKING TUBE on a motherboard and claiming somehow it improves STEREO DIGITAL AUDIO works just great. it's not just marketed at fools, at all.
abolishment of it's board of directors, Michael Grade selling them to labour: this is all "under the thumb" of not parliament, but the labour party. This would not be mooted if they'd done a Fox news and whooped and hollered the invasion of the Middle East.
£120 a year is *phenomenal* value for money. 10 digital channels, 2 terestrial channels - all packed full of high-quality, advert-free intelligent programing. 4 FM national radio stations, a load of local radio - all advert-free. Numerous digital radio stations. World-class reporting and news that's unbiased. One of the best all-round websites there is. The BBC is an *amazing* resource for UK citizens and one that's very cheap indeed considering what you get. Contrast with £300 a year for Sky and Murdoch's poison.
...they'll introduce arguments like this and try to take the licence fee away from them. The reason this is happening is because the BBC had the temerity to question the Hutton report into the WMD in Iraq issue.

Microsoft do not make modems.
Modem makers make modems.
Why would Microsoft write a driver for another manufacturer's product?

i'll rephrase it. YOU can't tap fibre.
no. you can break other people's fiber, which will make them Very Unhappy, but you can't tap it.
...phone up a user, tell them to change their password to x. login and fuck about. the end. this is +5, why?
...it's an iPod
they come on a spindle...

want to get linux a toehold in enterprise? no chance until you can write to (NTFS) shares.
press Escape on boot. Press F1 at "check system" prompt.
....3) PROFIT!

is this patented by apple, now?

do you have enough cash to keep you and your significant other with a roof, food and any other essentials whilst you look for another job?
That would be "professional looking manner". Hope iMovie comes with a spell check.
