Yes, being fat is somewhat a choice for almost everyone. There are ways to keep almost everyone's weight moderate, through diet and exercise and proper sleep.
The simple truth is that many fat people are insufficiently motivated to consistently work hard on all those areas for long periods.
Tv or go for a walk? A choice. Eat carbs or protein to satisfy hunger? A choice. Regular or diet soda? Choice.
And this is coming from someone who has struggled with this all my life, so I'm Npt being simply judgmental.
I believe evolution happens, both historically and currently, and on scales both grand and small.
But I'm tired of so-called scientists making news stories out of un-testable speculations about how something or another could have been a factor in our evolutionary past.
That kind of speculation is for late-night living-room talk, not scientific journals.
That guy should totally come to the USA. Then he'd have the full protection of the U.S. Constitution, guaranteed by Eric Holder and Barak Obama themselves!!!
Our government refuses to admit that waterboarding, sleep-deprivation, and blasting a person with loud music for days on end are "torture". So them claiming they won't "torture" someone is a pretty weak commitment.
As an American, it breaks my heart that my fellow citizens are okay with indefinite detention and torture, and with the wiretapping which violates our constituation's 4th amendment.
It's a small comfort that our government is facing trouble abroad because of those policies.
As I age, I'm getting this accumulation of little maladies that's making me really hanker for advances in surgical technologies. Case in point, I've got an annoying floater in my right eye. They're traditionally hard to treat effectively, I think partially because normal surgical techniques does as much harm as good for this problem. It seems like just the job for a micro-robot that can swim through an eye's vitreous and gather/destroy other small objects.
And grammar. Almost no one "graduates" a 4 year college. Most students "are graduated". It's the school, not the student, who is the active party in the graduation.
Is driving a tank as fun as it looks?
In Perl??? TERRORIST!!!
O believe whole-hog would be e**(pi * i)
How long before a prankster prints a sign reading 2 kmh and posts it on a highway?
Or, for fun with fuzzing car firmware, posts a sign reading "-1 kmh" or "1/0 kmh" ?
Wait, slow down, I'm writing.
What was it? "s... u... d..."
Impressive. You just presented both "Just doing my job" and "Everyone else does it" arguments in a single post. Well done.
Nicely put.
Sonia does this work... When on member of a very large group shows a bad trait, you vaguely ascribe that trait to the whole group (Republicans)?
I faced a similar issue on BoingBoing. I was arguing a contrarian position, and I think I was being perfectly polite and reasonable.
I was permanently banned by a moderator, for reasons which seemed to me contrived.
It was a helpful reminder that people of ALL political stripes can argue I'm bad faith.

What's insightful about realizing that one can use disease-causing parasites to model disease-causing parasites?
I think we all lost the last four Presidential elections.
is it agile???

Yeah, fair point. I was already in a bad mood when I came across this article, and I went into rant mode. Sorry about that. Oh, and get off my lawn.

Can the government force me to make a public statement, attesting that it's true?
Because it seems to me that the government using my private keys to sign a packet that I didn't create is substantially similar.
One can sympathize with the victims of one's actions, and yet still consider the actions to be necessary to prevent a greater harm.
So her and Jim Gray?
WTF, Computer Science?

"Our children our the future,"? Heh, you're making this too easy.
