    I would, at the very least, suggest replacing TV Broadcast news with NPR and PBS

    Well sort of. I've been guilty of building "IE Only" sites in the distant past.

    I hear ya there bud, one day I sat down and thought about my target audience, this was years back of course. Only a few hundred to a thousand people most of whom I could contact IRL, 99.8% where using IE4 at the time. There was just no point in wasting an extra timing coding for an audience that didn't exist.

    Ahhh the joys of default passwords. I remember my high school's implementation of network security which had a few default passwords just waiting be found via lycos... or was it hotbot back then?

    Either way when it was discovered I was assuming control of my work station to increase screen resolution to effectively use the IDE they had provided, well they slapped me on the wrist and brought me back down to 640x480 for security reasons of course. When I said fuck it and wrote a program that changed the resolution for me with the skills I had been taught in that class... Oddly enough instead of a passing grade my school year dramatically shortened. ie Explusion.

    Stupidity and default passwords ftw!

    Perhaps. But in my personal experience the big names are reliable enough for me to continue to use their services. Seems like a slow news day or someone wanted to stroke Alex Payne's ego for whatever reason as his claim to fame doesn't seem to all that worth a write up by the NY Times.

    with all that oil you have up there......

    It's not Oil that Canada has that makes us so interested. It is in fact Oil Shale. Which requires one to pay a tremendous cost (water, environment, energy) to develop the Kerogen into usable liquid hydrocarbons.

    It's not worth the energy and materials needed IMHO.

    Let's see it's been about 10-11 years for me, safe(er) browsing/downloading habits, hardware/software firewall combo and I feel pretty safe. I run AVG to scan my downloaded torrents. Funny thing is the one and only virus I ever did have was found on my very first 486, running Win 3.11 for Workgroups. I had a boot sector virus on the hard disk that was attached to the sound cards IDE controller, dam those were the days! But the anti-virus at the time was on some unlabeled disc that came with my 33.6k modem.

    Version 8 of their product is the most bloated thing I've seen in ages.

    Yeah utilizing 50MB of my 2GB system memory is an affront to all that I hold dear. A free program that has the audacity to work and has shown a consistent track record of reliability and performance! I'm writing my congressman asap.

    The only possible real effect is that it might temporarily de-humidify the air in your room a little due to condensation on the ice blocks, giving the impression that it is "somewhat" cooler.

    I wouldn't even give them that... I'm sure that's just a happy coincidence for the 'engineers' that created such a stupendous device!

    Not exactly, but combustion can still play a large roll in deciding the roll trees should play in carbon sequestration.

    Common sense says don't drive short distances to get that $5 cup of coffee and instead invest in a Mr. Coffee machine and brew your own coffee or just quit drinking coffee and drink water instead.

    Well you know how they say you should be active 15-20mins a day? I've found that by choosing not to drive I get my daily dose of activity in spades. :)

    Makes it hard to get to that odd concert some times but the sheer satisfaction I feel as another black SUV rolls by driven by a cellphone attatched to a human...

    The real scam imho is we've let 4 wheels and blacktop dictate how we build, where we live work and play and how we socialize...

    im not sure how extensive it is, or what its limitations are, Me niether, but the PhysX denos certainly had a neat feel to them... I think I ended up with them from a UT3 install, can't find a link to the originals, but I found this which looks exactly the same.

    But going from a little physics demo to full blown kick ass 3d game with any meaningful results is a whole 'nother matter.

    "Legitimate" media caches and disruption of all other P2P traffic only makes step one worse. It's a tiered internet in disguise, one step at a time. Not only that it's a double edged sword... I download OpenOffice via p2p, but in reality I assume the "legitimate" cache would be so far under utilized they would take the numbers to congress as some measure of "proof" to pass anti-p2p legislation.

    I, for one, will continue to enjoy the imperfections introduced by humans when playing instruments. I find artificially generated music (I'm looking at you techno) to sound rather bland and boring. But then again different strokes fo different folks!

    The data CDs I burned in the early-mid 90s are also still fine. Yeah I still have some old mp3 mixes that are about 8 years old now and are still readable. No fancy media just whatever was on sale at the dept. store.

    no they're not. ever hear of cd rot? There is in fact higher quality archival media. Taiyo Yuden media has been mentioned to me many times over the years in that regard...

    Personally I keep 2 sets of copies a secondary hard disc, originals & edits. I also keep a master copy on standard Maxwell DVD+R that I check periodically generally when I add another volume, roughly 6 months time. I also keep another set on my gf's computer on the network, keeps her out of my hair in Photoshop ;) And I'm always assured to have at least 2 straight from the camera collections on physically separate devices and media.

    OSX has fewer security holes than Windows. How can you say that with any certaintity when you don't have the worlds underground hammering at your door every day for years on years? I believe the mac is simply a less valuable target to those to seek to circumvent your computers security. If the rewards were there, the security problems would be too.

    Yup, funny that... Enjoying a product that 'just works' (for me at least, I've seen plenty of horrible configs), supports all the latest hardware and has tons of software. Especially the kick-ass fighting games with action missiles!

    But I digress I'm sure the windows larger market share plays absolutely no part in it's struggle with securing the platform. I'm sure having more mass appeal ensures only the best and brightest will use your OS, right? right?
