When you can get a brand new and amazingly more powerful laptop for 400 dollars, five year old laptops are not worth 300 dollars. Yeah, buy and throw away, rinse and repeat!

Seriously though, I kept my 1ghz P3 long after the point of diminishing returns. The amount of money I spent on incremental upgrades would of bought a brand new rig.... But not one I new so intimately. Or ran so stable. Plus I'm sure there was a bit of emotional attachment to the damn thing, so many LAN parties so many mp3s, so much fun. Eventually it got the the point the only upgrade left would of been to purchase a P3-Tualatin off E-Bay... But by that point the system I intended to replace it with dropped to >$100 per component... I passed the ol' p3 along to someone else that could still get adequate use out of it.

The point is, it may be easier or even cheaper to junk your kit and buy new gear. But it's not always what you want, can or will do.

as opposed to Intel's corporate agenda that tanks gaming because "businesses" don't "need" it. Exactly, businesses do not need advanced 3d acceleration. They are businesses, the bottom line is king. (increased hardware costs, lost productivity, etc.)

Both AMD and Nvidia/VIA will put more balanced machines out there. That is an incorrect statement since none of those companies actually sell working "machines". Instead they develop and sell components. Which aside from VIA are all comparable with one another in terms of price and performance (generally).

that a $1200 Macbook (with the fastest dual core processors out there) play games like WoW like crap Well that's a given. Proper 3d acceleration is a must for any modern game. It should be noted my girlfriend has proven to be an ample tank for my alt priest while playing on a 750Mhz AMD Duron with 1gb of memory and an nVidia GeForce 6600LE AGP card. While I happily played my character to end game (name:mithrilvar server:moonrunner 70/war/a) on a 1ghz Intel Pentium 3 with 768mb ram and a 6600LE video card.

But it's "cheaper" for Intel to hose it's partners with the integrated graphic and eventually the game industry will change how they make games so they can run on 4 year old intel crapware. Well yes it's cheaper, but that's the name of the game. Even the very latest IGP's (from nvidia/ati) are only 'passable' when it comes to current gaming trends. So what would be the point when even the very best to be offered pales in comparison to a dedicated card?

In regards to your theory they are holding out for software developers to adapt to their slower hardware... Well that would be great if it was true as that would allow them to concentrate on game play. All of my favorite games run on dramatically older hardware (civ3/4, simcity4, serious sam, baldur's gate, etc.) and I know I'd love to see more games of a similar caliber ;)

If you have a good graphics chip, you only need 1.5 GHz or so to run the average PC game if you have a modern true DX9 card in the box I would say something rated 2.0ghz these days, as my experiences with an ATI x1800 XT (one of the fastest dx9 single card solutions to have been released) have shown me. And dual core is a must. Of course if you buy a nice DX10 card I'm sure you could get by with 1.5ghz, but with prices the way they are why short yourself and leave your video card bottlenecked by the cpu?
