Want to better the education system? Quit throwing money at it and teach the kids to read. Sorry, it doesn't cost a quarter million dollars to teach 30 kids to read.

Yeah, I'll fax you the fiscal 2002 state budget.

No, they don't divide the entire budget by the number of K12 students. The figures are provided by the office of the State Controller every year. Education spending has gone up 80% in the last five years. $230,000 per classroom after paying for the teacher. Where's the money? It sure ain't going to repairing the crumbling schools or providing books.

The schools are wasting immense amounts of money while providing almost nothing they are supposed to, and churning out class after class of graduates who can't read or add. Sorry, but its a fact.

No more new taxes. Fix it with the budget they've got or give it up. Everyone else has to make do.

governors are coveting more than ever the billions of dollars of sales tax revenue they could be taking in to fund schools and pave roads.

Sorry fellas. The average taxpayer sees 40%+ of their income go to various confiscatory taxes already.

We're spending $9000 per student per year on schools, which is enough to chauffer students to class in limosuines, and there are already massive taxes on gasoline, et al. to fund paving roads.

ENOUGH. Cut spending. Get rid of the 40,000 state workers with nothing to do. Quit borrowing money to build schools. Stop the waste. Right there is enough to balance any budget.

There are already taxes on internet sales, by the way. The internet is not a "tax free zone." New taxes should not be allowed. Period.

    1. Backwards compatible with the PSOne and PS2. Plenty of great games for those systems still out there, and I still like to play them.

    2. Hard drive. This will be needed for the online games (which I don't care about) and add-ons (which I do). While there are games like RPG Maker 2 coming out which use the memory card, I'm more interested in seeing a PC like mod-community surround the PS3 - something we don't have now.

That, and I just don't like memory cards. I must have 20 PSOne memory cards (and most of those backed up to the PC through some third party units). I'd like to be able to swap save games with my friends just by connecting to them online.

    3. Built in Ethernet/Modem: I'm assuming that come 2005 we'll still mostly be connecting via 56K modems in some areas, so let's assume that's going to be the case. I don't need a "$10 a month for a central line" - I don't play online that often, and I'd rather just have a few good friends who aren't assholes connect to my PS3 over the 'Net to play.

    4. With the Ethernet/Modem, I want a CDDB system for my CD's to store them on the HDD.

    5. And, of course, I want a Linux disk to be orderable with the system - just for those of us who like to tinker.

    In other words, a PC.

Hilarious. People who complain all day that a few companies will control ____ with _____ technology are walking right into it on the game consoles with their eyes wide open and singing the corporate jingle at the top of their lungs.

The original statement was "there are no user level applications to speak of," which is clearly bunk.
