But let's not kid ourselves: if you were building a server from scratch today (not late 2010), you wouldn't use Sandy Bridge?

Just finished building my linux server/workstation. I needed cores and cheap. Picked up a Phenom II X6 1090T for about 160$, motherboard for 100$ (supports Bulldozer, has lot of SATA ports), 8 GB RAM for about 80$, rest of pieces I had them. 340$ total. For that, I can barely get a 2500K with some shitty motherboard. The 2600K is about 320$. And since I'll be doing mostly programming, running virtual machines and just normal PC use (browsing, videos, etc ...) I need as many physical cores as possible (even if IPC is low) vs less cores and more IPC. Also, this build allows me to upgrade processor later on with an 8 core bulldozer if I ever need it.

PS: My dual core gaming rig is getting a 2500K + Asus Maximus Gene IV upgrade. As others said it: Best tool for the job.

    - On new Sandy Bridge laptops, booting always caused hangs. I couldn't boot Linux (Arch or Ubuntu) if I had the power brick connected. Hanging is just one issue, another one is that the network card is unable to connect to the network. Also, if you dual boot, Windows might tweak with cards settings and when you reboot into Linux, it still hangs or simply can't connect to network. Solution is complete power off and rebooting without power brick being on. I even tried de-activating ASPM and didn't work (pcie_aspm=off). Only thing working as you mentionned is pcie_aspm=off, at least for me!

What do you mean you can't install and configure Linux? What do you mean you don't have $1200 to drop on an Apple macbook?

    Ubuntu:
    - Installer asks me about my time zone, user name and password. Everything else can be done on autopilot.
    - Once booted, if there are restricted drivers, I got a popup telling me to install them if I want. Install is a two button click: (1) Install, (2) Reboot. All this 'massive' configuration is done.

    Windows:
    - Installer is pretty much similar to Ubuntu, minor inquiries.
    - Once booted, a lot of hardware doesn't work and I have to install drivers for everything including silly things like CPU driver and various system bus drivers and sometimes even sound cards.
    - My other option is, to insert the motherboard's driver CD and pray to Jeebus that it doesn't install a bunch of bloatware and crapware along my drivers. Oops, too late, even Asus are bundling garbage like Symantec Total Absolute Maximum Super Duper Security suite (30 day trial version) with their driver CDs. Oh, and there is no way to skip this installation if you chose the CD way because Asus wants you to secure your computer, honest!
    - Once drivers are taken care of, I have to get some security software and install it. I have to stop a bunch of services that are not needed (I am looking at you Remote Registry and Telephony!).

But yes, keep telling yourself that installing and configuring Linux is such a complicated task.
