You're right. We do need education. Fortunately, the RIAA is doing this for us.
I like this. I mean, I feel sorry for the "hundreds" of people who are going to lose their life savings, but this is probably going to be the final coffin. I mean, hell, right now the only people that know about even the RIAA's existance are those who care about politics AND the internet AND music.
But when Little Jimmy's Dad (who barely even touches a computer except Microsoft Excel at the office) gets sued for millions of dollars, you can be damn sure Little Jimmy's Dad won't buy any more CDs, his family won't buy any more CDs, his co-workers won't buy any more CDs, his extended family won't buy any more CDs...
So far, no one really cares about the P2P problem (and no one boycotts CDs) because it hasn't hit home for most of America yet.
It's hitting home now.
-- Funksaw.
Wait and laugh.
Sooner or later, they're going to sue someone with a gun collection who shows up to court and starts shooting - because he has nothing else to lose.
And when that happens, do not expect sympathy for the deceased. People feel powerless, disenfranchised - because what they say and what they do does not matter. Expect a crackdown...
This whole thing could start a new wave of domestic terrorism and class warfare. If we're lucky, it might be isolated - like the Weathermen in the 1960s. If we're not so lucky, it could tear this country apart.

Don't get me wrong, but I find it highly amusing that the social forces most responsible for technological innovation in 2003 are music and pornography, rather than the historically classic innovator: warfare.
I don't know about you, but I consider porn & mp3s to be a step up from blood and death as far as humanity as a whole is concerned.
Actually, I tested it out - on the new version, I managed to print out a page perfectly:D
Which means I'm now using it as my full time word processor!

As a guy who's stuck with AppleWorks (since he's sworn off pirated software) and doesn't want to give money to Microsoft, I'm waiting for a usable port of OpenOffice to MacOSX.
However, I'm not sure that I can consider the MacOSX port of OpenOffice as "usable" until it has the capacity to -print- the documents I create in it.
An Aqua/Cocoa port would be great, but right now, I just want full functionality.
I really like Jaguar, and have it installed on my system. Furthermore, I love the security additions of Panther, and Expose looks like it will save me tons of time in frustration looking for the right window.
I understand that you need to price the item at $129 in order to make a profit - this is understandable. I would be getting alot of great new features too, for the price.
But, considering that I have just paid $129 last fall for Jaguar, and considering that I do not expect any upgrade problems if I decide to upgrade directly from 10.2 to 10.4, I think it might be a better idea at this time to wait another year for 10.4, and spend $129 then.

See, there's very little difference in policy between Democrats and Republicans nowadays (mostly due to corporate contributions, but I digress...)
The issues that most people vote on are:
Abortion Taxes Gun Control
Cause those are the only places that the parties disagree.
There are plenty of people who oppose the Patriot Act. There are plenty of people who want to make possession of marijuana a ticketable offense. There's many who want campaign contribution reform. There's many who want safeguards on civil rights. There's many who want MORE FCC regulation, not less. There's many who want lowered copyright terms.
But they don't get airplay.
Because the informed don't have the access to inform the uninformed. TV only covers the Republican and the Democratic campaigns, newspapers only write about the issues the candidates propose, and 3rd parties can't win, not because of issues, but because people believe a third party is wasting a vote.
In other words, the American people are disenfranchised, and we are slowly seeing the results of that disenfranchisement - the establishment of a police state.
I've got a 40 GB HD. Data is backed up to CDRW.
If I had to guess right now, I'd probably need to backup 10 backup CDs at 650mb (or just 1 CD if I wasn't interested in music,) reinstall OSX 10.2, run Software Update, install Snak, Photoshop 7, and Appleworks.
I could get back up and running in 2 hours.
Your point?
Let's just talk about the claim the Microsoft can't compete with Safari because it doesn't have the underlying source code.
Sure, it might not have access to quartz and aqua, but guess what? Darwin's open source. So are most implimentations of KHTML, if you want to get technical about it.
It's not like, say, Windows, where the source code is secret, copyrighted, locked up... and where the person who has access to the source code can actually use that to make speed improvements (and security holes.)
No IE for Mac? Fine with me. I deleted the damn thing anyway. Between Mozilla, Safari, Chimera, Omniweb, Opera, and the various browsers I can get working on AppleX11, I've got more choices for browsers on my Mac than I do for windows!
It's true - Macs are harder to upgrade the CPU than PCs. Everything else is fair game, but the CPU is expensive to upgrade.
On the plus side, Macs retain their resale value for much longer. If you buy a top of the line Mac in year X, by the time you ebay it in year X+2, it'll probably pay for half of your new top-of-the-line mac.
I'm trying to sell my laptop right now to buy a mac... because my Laptop is windows based, I can't get crap for it - even though it's only 8 months old.
-- Funky.
Yeah. Some of thier stuff would be good, but $9.99 (or less) an album compared to the distro model they have now.
I only hope they lower the price per album sold... $4 is reasonable when they have to do all the work of shipping and warehousing, but when all they're doing is acting as a middleman, that price *should* go down.
-- Funky.

Here's the fun bit.
Want to share your MP3s?
Get an offshore server.
Hmm... who has servers, high speed connections, and storage space in a country (such as Vanatu) which has lax copyright laws?
Hmm...
1. Wait for the RIAA to sue users
2. Provide server space outside the jurisdiction of the U.S.
3. Profit!!!

Why not just set a spending cap of $25,000 for a congressional campaign, $250,000 for a presidential campaign?
Oh, that's right. Those in power like the system just fine.

The problem is, a congressman can talk about how it's "ethical" to destroy file-traders' computers.
The second that a file-trader talks about destroying a corporate server though...
The problem is, the government can talk about how it's "ethical" to imprison, torture, and kill Muslims without trial.
The minute you start talking about kidnapping a Senator though...

Funny how low the bar is set in American Media.

I'm Brian Boyko.
Damn straight. Didn't answer the question at all.
And let me give you a real-life example.
I bought Metallica's S&M used.
There was a scratch through Fuel that made it unplayable.
The only way then, to get the song that I legally purchased, would be to download it.
Jerks.
I could use a print authoring tool like Quark, but I really can't afford $900 for it. $900 is more than my entire budget.
:(
I'd pay $250 or so for Adobe Pagemaker (and actually prefer it,) but there's no Pagemaker for OSX...
Right now I'm using Appleworks.
Are there any other alternatives out there for just basic print page design on OSX?

What's this RFID? If you buy a shirt, how could you wear it with an RFID tag still on?
-- Funky.
