What are the working conditions for the average employee? Is the average employee working an 8 hour day, a 10 hour day, or longer?

What are the common positions available in India? What is the average salary by position? What is the average cost of a one bedroom apartment in a major city? Relative to the cost of living (specifically in the cities), are these jobs considered middle class?

Does the average employee have the freedom to change jobs, or to move? Or is room and board provided as a part of the total compensation package? If it's provided, does this limit people's ability to advocate for themselves on the job?

How much influence do management\ownership have on the average workers life?

    I call bullshit.

I work with some nice folks from over seas, so I have bit of an insider's perspective. A co-worker of mine, who's originally from India and I discussed this very subject just the other day.

In our conversation we discussed the conditions of the average citizen. Specifically how it related to our own temporary employees. The company I work for does business with a rather large, shall remain nameless for the sake of objectivity and professional courtesy type of outsourcing firm. Among other things, we talked about the living conditions in her country.

Narrowing our focus to the cities, where most of these jobs are located, I found out roughly how much it costs to rent an apartment, buy food, and so on. We compared those expenses with how much I am paying for my apartment, what food expenses were, and so on. Althought it's not very scientific, I was a bit shocked to find that the facts of the situation did not match my expectations.

I was surprised to discover that not only did the employees doing work for us in India did not make enough money to be considered middle class, but they had relatively little freedom to change jobs. They recieve rent (four people to one apartment), food, and a salary. It's not that they are living in poverty, but by no means can they be considered middle class, even by India standards.

The problem as I see it, is that people's entire lives are dependent upon their relationship to the outsourcing firm in question.

Someone out there is making huge money off of this, and it's not the people who are actually working these jobs. People more knowledgeable, and wiser than myself have commented on the relationship our executives have with the outsourcing firm. I am not making any accusations, but I would love to see the actual data.

I'm new to making decent posts, so if you got this far, thanks kindly for reading this, feel free to respond however you see fit. Thanks much,

First things first, you can not legislate against stupidity, nor carelessness.

Don't like Real Player, don't use it. However, an argument can be made for opting IN to ads vs. having to opt OUT of marketing ploys. I feel that for too long the burden has fallen on the consumer, this RealPlayer article may not be a good example to use in this argument.

Perhaps this argument would be better made against telemarketers and spammers, as a thourough user would never install the software without scrolling down. However, it took me a few installs to figure this out (read my handle, and you'll understand) with RealPlayer, and I was upset about it at the time. But I learned to be more vigilant with regards to what I install on my machine. Although, having limited experience, I can not tell for certain what some software is doing on my machine (see Windows XP) I would like to see better disclosure regarding what software I buy, is doing on my machine. None of this crap about providing a service, it's a product.

With regards to spam, and other so called "marketing" (it's not a market if you send it to 100 million different random addresses, hoping to find someone stupid enough to want to see barnyard animals get it on with hot young comely lasses, not to mention hiding yourself behind fake headers, etc.) ploys, I would like to legislate the difference between the retail environment, and the private sphere.

I should at least be able to sit in my own apartment, and not be bothered to buy something. When I am out looking to make a purchase, it's one thing, but when I am not, it has the opposite effect on me. If I see something tasty and shiny in the grocery store, I may buy it. If someone makes me get up from the couch during the Simpsons, to sell me the same thing, I may yell at them.

I have to run now, someone stupid, has done something stupid, yet again. And I have to go fix it.

Speaking of stupid, anyone need a good help desker? I don't eat much, and I don't know the difference between right and wrong!
