I went to the site, hit Print. It seemed to get stuck in the print queue, so I refreshed and hit Print again. I walked over to the printer and found two copies - one that said 1 Jan 100 and another that said 1 Jan 2000. I must have refreshed just as they were fixing it. Wheeheee!:)
Man... That's a pretty depressing outlook. We all live in the world as we perceive it. We can all get depressed and melancholy about it, or we can make the best of what we have.
I think a lot of the problem is that too many people (myself included a lot of the time) are defeatists: acting like the game has already been lost, giving up before the whistle blows.
Yes, there are some selfish/thoughtless people out there, but we don't have to give up already. We can still win by quietly, politely informing those people that that is not the way things are going to be allowed. If you're going to be a selfish, pushy brat, then you'll have to leave the sandbox to us kids who can get along with each other.
I'm glad I didn't get this news any sooner! I talked my wife into letting me open my Christmas present, a Meade DS 114 EC, early, so I'd have time to assemble and get used to using it, before the 22nd! So it wasn't all a loss! (Although she may make me pack it back up now:( )
Sorry in advance: I am one of these annoying newer users trying to make the switch to Linux from Windows, so obviously using KDE. Therefore, I am used to using ARK to uncompress *.tar.gz files. However, JBuilder is just a.tar and ARK says that it doesn't know what to do with it.
Can some kind soul please tell me the proper incantation to invoke tar to uncompress it from BASH?
I agree. I first heard the band 'Creed' on a 'pirated' MP3. I liked them so well that I bought the CD. They would not have had the sale otherwise, as the crappy radio station around here does not play anything but, well, crap.
How about the WTO enforce some kind of "fair wage" mentality so I don't have to have such a problem. Another problem, I didn't see any USA-made telescopes. They must be like typewriters: There hasn't been ONE company making them here in the USA for about 10 years. Because it's easier to get cheap labor (aka steal) from people in Mexico who can't afford much more than a cardboard box to live in from the wages they pay.
That's just it - you're missing the point. We are NOT condemning the corporations right to do business, instead we are condemning the way that a lot of the large corporations are taking advantage of workers. Not giving back what they should. Taking more than they need. Needlessly, callously, unconcernedly making people live miserable lives.
Come on moderators: This post isn't insightful, it's simply regurgitating the Politically Correct attitude towards this situation, as prescribed by Dr Big Business. Sickening.
Know New Taxes! (Haven't we been fed this line before???)
Here little kids, want some candy? We will feed you candy in the early days, then sell you into slavery when you grow up. WTO is Big Brother coming to life. This whole thing scares me. Seems the WTO is only intent on enslaving third world workers. That $500 Meade telescope I just bought, made in Taiwan - I bet the guy who actually did the hard work probably made fifty cents to build it. A dollar if lucky.
Yes, in theory, what the WTO is supposed to do is great. I agree with you on stopping tariffs, creating a global marketplace, but I do not agree with they way they are taking advantage of the people who actually do the work.
They really need to stop and address that. That is what people are protesting - the human factor, not the business greed.
Yah yah, whatever. Blow it out your ass you fucking lamer.
"You should already have counsel"... Huh? Why? What the hell for?
What are you thinking of here, something like "Uh, Mr Lawyer, can you please pre-inform me of the proper response for every possible threatening phone call?"
Oh yes, the movie was SOOOOOOO provocative. C'mon, it was a poorly-done spoof. About as professional as the Blair Witch Project. I suppose you think that the FBI should be calling up Arnold Schwartzenegger about the scary Y2K shit in "The End of Days" movie. That movie has a lot better chance of getting the general uneducated public freaked out about Y2K.
"...whom I wouldn't have trusted to run a small office network". What they hell releveance does that have to do with anything? ISPs that cannot support their customers will go out of business rather quickly. Sounds more like you are a hidden-agenda person for a megalithic communications company of some type. Go suck a balloon.
"I look down at my System Tray right now and wonder just how many of those programs are sending information back to the company about what I do..." No doubt! I just noticed this "Real Start Center" thingy in my task bar. I went into it's preferences and turned it off, to be presented with a message "Are you sure you want to do this, RealPlayer will start more slowly this way"...
Hmmm... But it also means that my computer will BOOT FASTER! I only use Real about once out of every 10 times I fire up my computer, so it sounds like a winning situation to not have to waste the time loading the "Start Center" whatever the fuck that is supposed to do...
So does anyone know what that little intruder is doing while sitting in the tray?
I agree that you don't get the same feeling with the average "web community" type site that you used to get back in the good old BBS days.
I've been trying to find a happy medium for a web page and a BBS. I looked at the HTML interface for Citadel/UX, and it's just terrible. I figured there has got to be a way to move the feel to a web browser. A way to take the group interaction of the forum posting, but also the personal feel of being able to see who else is there with you and be able to send personal messages to other people who are there.
It's way early in the coding, but it does work. It combines a forum interface somewhat similar to the one here on Slashdot, but also adds the ability to show Who's On, and send messages between logged in users. Dunno if it'll stand up to the/. effect, but hopefully it will. You are welcome to try it out at: http://24.3.245.223/MessageBase/
My job started as a salaried/exempt from overtime position. However, about a year ago they changed it to salary with overtime, as the "Wage Hour Law" defined a set of rules on how to determine if an employee can be classed as 'exempt from OT'. I am a senior systems engineer, my techie duties did not match the classification, so I started getting overtime. That was very cool with me. The only drawback is I have to fill out a timesheet - but then, how else can they figure out how much overtime to pay me if I do not tell them? Plus, I can bill them for more overtime for my time spent filling out my timesheet, so I figure it's a win situation for me!
I had some stupid "This doesn't seem like a salaried position anymore" attitude at first, then realized that it meant I was bringing home almost $10,000 more this year and got over that real quick!
Brazil. (Easy search engine fodder!) Now if I could just figure out what that first set of names is from. Blair Witch Project! (Only that would be Captain!):)
The whole Self-regulation concept failed miserably a long time ago. I wonder if I can request that the law also requires them to contact my parents before selling my personal info, even if I am 31! Either that, or make it a law that I get a cut of any money made from selling my personal info. Then I would not have a problem with it. Them damn leaches make millions off selling my info, yet I get nothing in return. I supposed there's a small worth to recycling the junkmail sent to me, but that just don't cut it! I am way sick of junk mail!
I think the worst thing was that shitty DVD-player software they try to install on your machine. The interface sucks, and it locked up on me twice, I promptly uninstalled it and used the standard Compaq DVD software to play it with very little problems. I did notice a few 'flashframes' and times when the framerate seemed to slow.
I think the motto should be "Children should not be allowed to surf the Internet any more than children should be allowed to drive on the Interstate" or something like that. Maybe "The InterSTATE was not designed for children, neither was the InterNET" (Letting your kids play in the street again? Maybe we should outlaw cars!)
"and who dictates irrevocable public health policy from a document written in 1790"
I am curious what you are referring to there. (No offense, I just can't figure out what document you are referring to and what publicy health policy that might be"

Has anybody ever actually made an excuse generator? That would kick ass! :)
It's bullshit. They don't have to. In fact, they might just pocket the money.

More WTO Protest discussion here.
You youngsters are so brainwashed by the media you never had the chance to learn how to think for yourself.
They really need to stop and address that. That is what people are protesting - the human factor, not the business greed.
'not evil' works on Windows 2000 Pro (RC2 anyway)

If the people from Real are reading: You software just got deleted from my system. Bye...
