    Because it isn't permanent sterilization, but it has essentially the same effect. Oral contraception or barrier devices don't work in many parts of the world.

    But then the problem is that there is no incentive for anyone to keep the factories running. So people who have the initiative and ability are given extra rewards, and you are right back to the only system that works...Capitalism

    I suppose you can be more subtle about it, but really any video cam would work just as well. Especially if you set it up near a place where people will be typing a useful password instead of loitering and staring at people.

    Back in my time, we called what they have done now "an expert system". I fail to see why that designation should be suddenly inadequate.

    "Artificial Intelligence" predates "expert system", there was never a good reason to use a different term. Plus there was so much unfulfilled hype about Expert Systems and Knowledge Engineering back in their heyday that the terms have a negative connotation to many people.

    Actually the NYT opinion piece (not a news article) points out that the majority of Republicans are open to the idea of global warming:

    For instance, 46 percent of Republicans said there is not solid evidence of global warming

    I doubt that 54% of Republicans support the Democrats' knee jerk response to change the situation though. There's far more to cutting our dependence on fossil fuel than subsidizing impractical alternatives.

    They zapped a part of her brain that had the effect of stopping conscious thought. I suppose that meets the definition, but it sounds more like they overwhelmed her normal brain function rather than shut it off.

    Please define "fossil fuel subsidies". I'm not aware of any; every time someone tries to use that term they start claiming things like military spending, business expenses, etc., but they can never come up with anything that resembles a subsidy.

    Depending on a company to give you a pension is a very bad idea. Look for a company with good 401k matching, it's far more valuable. And give up on the idea of 30 and out, no company can afford that.

    I suppose it depends on how old the kids are. But really, if the kid is old enough to have their own phone then the parents need to do some better parenting. The first step I would take is to give them a Tracfone. Don't like being uncool? Learn that actions have consequences.

    Who is paying for that?

    You wrote that on a computer most likely powered by fossil fuels, and posted on a web site almost certainly powered by fossil fuels, on an Internet developed by defense spending. So look in a mirror for the answer to your question.

    If you're going to own real property, there's a general consensus that you should put it to productive use, or forfeit.

    There is no such general consensus; in fact that's a foolish utopian statement. Real property is a place to invest money. Taxes lower the return on that investment - but if you are not putting it to productive use there is no reason to continue that investment so it would be sold anyway. Market forces rule.

    Our society was built upon the understanding that those who benefit the most from something should pay the most.

    There's no way to determine who benefits the most. Our tax structure (not our society) is built on pretending to tax those who can pay more at a higher rate, but nobody believes it actually does that.

    Take a look at the article, the only person it actually mentions specifically as trying to do this is a republican.

    Except for the actual specific mention of the Subcommittee chair, who is a Democrat.

    Alexander's quote is just a statement of fact, it sounds pretty neutral to me - especially compared to Feinstein's.
