    That's the part I'm questioning. The HFT program *is* the trader, it takes a commission for arranging the trade between a buyer and a seller. The commissions charged today are far lower than just a few years ago.

    As I recall, before computerized trading it was done by human brokers who took a bigger cut than the computerized trades do today. I don't claim to understand either way, but for my occasional trades it doesn't seem any worse, maybe better than the old way.

    Have you ever traveled to a Third World country with a group of Westerners? My experience is that your group will likely be a full head taller and noticeably more muscular than the the locals. Yes, our diet is better than people in the past had available to them, that doesn't make it wrong.

    The internet is becoming part of our lives, so I kind of agree that in modern society it will probably be essential before too long. It isn't yet though.

    Regardless of whether the Internet is essential, you don't need "equality of access" to use it. I drive toll roads because they're faster and more convenient than the alternatives, but I could get to my destination without paying a toll

    Excellent question. IMHO it's a conscience decision by Dice to stir up debate with the goal of getting more traffic. Many of the hot topics have nothing to do with News for Nerds (how many threads did we see related to Zimmerman/Martin? how many did we see related to Occupy Wall Street?), Once the door is opened to screaming about politics it slops over into every thread.

    they use that to justify the illegal search that allowed them to search through the phone in the first place. Technically wiping it could be destruction of evidence, but in reality its civil disobedience

    Civil disobedience? Nah.

    The question is whether searching a cell phone is different from searching a wallet or car after the driver has been arrested. I don't think they're arguing for searching the phone before an arrest and without a warrant. But after an arrest, the phone has been impounded; they should turn it off and get a warrant. Anyone sophisticated enough to wipe it at that point is on their own.

    Good question, but did you realise it takes 6lbs of feed to raise 1 lb of meat?

    And you do realize that most of that feed is grass, which is grown on land not suited to cultivation? The final few weeks of "finishing" uses more grain, but the cattle are raised on hay, pasture and range.

    The Wired article gives a few anecdotes but no facts. The New York Magazine article has some pretty graphs showing unemployment rates. But neither provides any insight into the scope of the "sharing economy". It appears to me more like a couple of internet start-ups hyping themselves so they'll be the next acquisitions by Facebook.

    The only economically sustainable solution is to have a labor force that matches labor requirements. What Marx didn't foresee was the tremendous medical advances the world has seen in the past 100 years, allowing unsustainable population growth while the need to unskilled labor declines. No amount of sharing, unionization, or wealth transfer will help when there are billions of people with no demand for their labor.

    According to the DGF investigation, the company only sends Google Ireland contracts, but they are written in French with French clauses, and therefore considered French contracts.

    So why don't they write the contracts in English? They'd be easier to read that way.

    First, availability. They need the rockets now, and they already have a supplier who can provide the rockets now.

    Second, risk. A low bidder could knock out the incumbent, which means you no longer have a supplier - just someone who is quite sure that someday he'll be able to make a rocket as good as the one they already have. If he fails you can't go back to the first supplier, they've laid off their engineers and shut down production

    Yea, you can keep the existing supplier going until the competitor puts up or shuts up. That will happen eventually, when they decide they're ready to build the next generation launch platform.

    You fix that by having more than one supplier.

    That pretty much doubles the price of the contract right from the start. Good luck getting funding for that.

    No one disputes that something is wrong. The parents were insisting that she had mitochondrial disease and when one doctor didn't agree they went to another, and another, until they found one who would treat mitrochondrial disease.

    Oh, and you know what...one of the things the parents were accused of? and was used to justify the custody claim?

    Her mother expressed that she needed a feeding tube.

    Her mother insisted on all kinds of treatments. She was caught at the hospital with a handful of hypodermic needles.

    They give out your phone number so marketers can spam you with text messages, but you remain anonymous. Got it.

    Real translation: They have something that works.

    Developing and testing a heavy lift rocket takes years and piles of money. Once they have one they use it. Competing the procurement means anyone can come in with a low bid and provide some paperwork "proving" they have the expertise and resources to build the rocket. So now the government has to go through years of project management and cost overruns before finding out the contractor is incompetent. Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

    Everyone agrees that there is something wrong with the child.

    The problem is that the parents are fixated on a specific disease which clinical tests do not support. So instead of trying to find out what's really wrong with her, the parents went looking for another doctor who would give them the diagnosis they want. Think about that.

    College is a filter, those with the aptitude and drive to study a field make it through. Trying to flip that around so anyone can be hired for any job and the successful can then go on to college doesn't sound like a very workable solution.
