I've worked in Master Control at a state broadcaster for 7 years or so and no college degree would be of help there. Electrical engineering perhaps (I've got no special degrees) but mostly a good technical knowledge will do fine. Today it is mostly computer skills that is needed.

  16. Not quite as bad as it seems on French Government Bans Term 'E-Mail' · · Score: 2, Interesting

Firstly they are not banning the use of the word e-mail in the french language. They are setting guidelines for government websites and publications. Here in Iceland we regularly "domesticate" forreign words for daily use and often it works quite well. A few samples: Monitor = Skjar (Skjar was a word for windows (made from cow's stomachs) around 1000 years ago. Computer = Tölva (Made to match icelandic grammar and uses a form of the icelandic word for "number") E-Mail = Tölvupóstur/Rafpóstur (Computer mail/Electronig mail) Only used in "official" publications but usually not in day by day conversations. But then again...we have some fiascos as well that are never used by anyone :) But I understand and support the French in trying to keep the language somewhat clean of forreign words where it is possible.

Windows 98 was indeed translated into Icelandic but they managed to screw it up so bad that networking was almost destroyed and the translation was so "Icelandic" that practically nobody understood it :)

Today they cant' even give the remaining copies away :)

KDE is almost 100% in Icelandic but Gnome a bit less. Translation of openoffice and such has not started yet but that might still happen.

MacOs has been in Icelandic for many years but schools usually stick to Windows in english. I don't think that Linux will be used in schools here in the forseeable future. But stranger things have happened :)
