Yes, they do. I work in the telecom industry, and pretty much everyone pronounces it "voype". It's been a very long time since I've heard anyone in the industry actually say V-O-I-P.
I've done that one myself, to the file server at the office, even.
It was about 3am, I had a 12 pack of beer in me, and I was trying to get a new wifi card working in my home PC. At one point I hit alt-F2 to switch to a different terminal (completely forgetting that I was still logged into the file server on that terminal) and type "ifdown eth0", thinking I was killing the local eth0.
I was, of course, too drunk to drive to the office and fix it right away and had to wait until the next day, but luckily it was a Saturday night so the only e-mail we missed was a bunch of spam.
True. Playing basic strategy does require a good amount of discipline, though, since there are quite a few situations where the correct move is very counterintuitive.
I'd be willing to pay a maximum of $100. However, I may be willing to pay less once the "Oh, that's sexy," feeling I have wears off.
I'd be willing to pay around $300 or so, if a couple of assumptions turn out to be true. First, for that price it had damn well be durable enough to last a decade. Second, it better have a good enough "feel" to make me want to type on it for that long.
Just based on the renderings, those keycaps look awfully flat to me. Cool looking, but I'm wondering how much that would affect the feel. Also, it seems to me that getting the keys weighted properly might be a bit challenging with an OLED and associated wiring/support electronics affecting the travel of each key.
Not necessarily "better", but certainly different.
Many fruit trees will not bloom or produce fruit without a certain number of hours each season below a certain temperature. If I were to dig up the peach tree in my front yard and transplant it to Florida, it would never produce another piece of fruit. (There are, of course, other varieties of peach trees that do just fine in warmer climates.)
So, with no darkness, and no winter, plants would certainly evolve differently, but it's hard to be certain that they'd be better.
This will almost certainly be done using MPEG-2, at least in the beginning. TiVo and Netflix already announced some time ago that they were partnering up to offer exactly this sort of service.
Theoretically, they could wait for TiVo to start selling MPEG-4 capable hardware, but the benefits of a pre-existing large installed base of hardware certainly outweighs the benefits they'd gain from using a more efficient codec.
There may be software made available to watch movies on a PC, but it won't be their main focus. They'll be aiming for the 52" HDTV and $2000 surround sound system, not the 17" computer monitor and $50 Logitech speakers.
You were taking TFA at face value, while I didn't. The reason I didn't take it at face value is because I have actually done the things that you were assuming (based on TFA) to be impossible.
For the record, I wasn't dismissing IDE hacking out of ignorance. I was dismissing it out of the knowledge that the problem you were trying to solve had already been solved in a much simpler manner.
What stops you from emailing TiVo'd TV shows to your friends (other than copyright)?
Honestly? Copyright I don't worry about so much, in a case like that. Sure, it's technically illegal, but from a practical standpoint it's more like taping it on the VCR and dropping the tape off to them. I don't have any big moral dilemma about recording a show and letting a friend watch it.
As for emailing it to them? It's just not practical. The only e-mail account that I know of that allows attachments that size is a special account that I created for myself on a server that I manage. Plus, considering the transfer time, it's almost as quick to just burn a DVD and hand it to them the next time I see 'em.
There has been plenty of knowledge shared with you. Two main points come to mind:
1) While your idea is probably technically possible, it's simply not worth pursuing because of....
2) There doesn't seem to be a practical application. (Especially in regards to hacking a TiVo, where simply installing nfsd would be a far more "elegant" hack)
You'd probably get a better response if you could actually present a practical application for what your proposing. Instead, you simply dismiss anyone who doesn't see value in it as a "poser".
So. This device that you're proposing, what exactly would it be used for?
So is "gnu".
Yes, they do. I work in the telecom industry, and pretty much everyone pronounces it "voype". It's been a very long time since I've heard anyone in the industry actually say V-O-I-P.
It's "dirty"?
That's the stupidest fucking thing I've heard all day (even counting the three lame "soviet russia" jokes I've come across).
Then why did he specify that the problem occurs when they HIRE a new "India employee"?
He didn't say a damn thing about the background of the employees that were exhibiting this behavior.
Dude, if you don't want to make sense, just don't post.
I read your post 3 times and I'm not any closer to figuring out exactly what you meant.
Either make sense, or just stop wasting everyone's time.
How about turning the idea into code, selling it as a product, and building a succesful business on it?
You seem to be under the "software should always be free" mindset - it doesn't have to be so.

Nah, I'm old and crusty, too and I'm just as interested in hot chicks as ever.

In many places, there are only two broadband providers available: the cable company and the CLEC.
I believe you meant LEC.
If a CLEC does manage to gain the ability to sell DSL, it's guaranteed that the LEC in the area also offers it.
Why is it always the people with high user id numbers that brag about how "low" their id is?

"more sun = better crops"

What time would college students roll out of bed? When Sun #1 rose? Sun #2?
I corrected this for you.
What time would college students go to bed? When Sun #1 rose? Sun #2?
This would kill, absolutely kill, the market for downloading illegal movie content.
Ridiculous. People would still be more than happy to illegally download DVD iso images.
When did 'sux' become an acceptable spelling of 'sucks', by the way?
While I agree that it's annoying, at least he didn't say "teh sux0rs".

That's the big problem with tube amps, in order to sound good, they need to be LOUD. Great for concerts, but I'd never have one as my only amp.
I know at 3am my neighbors appreciate the output of my GT-6 being fed into headphones.
Yeah, that'll happen.
OK, I see where we got off on the wrong foot.

Dude!!!! Holy shit!
It has been a long time. Talk about a blast from the past, I haven't talked to you forever! You still hop onto TCF at all?
Well then get off your ass and hack it together, for fuck's sake!
It's YOUR itch. YOU scratch it!
assuming he's the same bonehead from various TiVo forums, and he seems to be
Yeah, that's me. (although I use a different username on most of them these days)
Just out of curiosity, do I know you? If you recognize the name, you must have been around for awhile, too.
