    SOME people charge because they are given no other choice- their minimum wage jobs and layoffs of skilled labor leave them either chargeing on credit cards or homeless and hungry. Welfare doesn't kick in until you're practically bankrupt.

    Here's a wild idea- let's give up 6% of corporate profits to make sure every single person gets a living wage. Let's protect those jobs by eliminating the WTO and the neo* death cults that Clinton and Bush have made public. Let's actually protect our borders. Let's not import more than we export. Do all of that- and maybe individual people would be able to act resposibly because the rich have set a good example instead of an evil one.

    But, alas, people don't save. Instead they run up credit card debt.

    I've got news for you- it's not just people. Countries and companies do the same. $661 Billion is what we collectively, as Americans, charged on the credit card for goods and services with other countries above what we exported. Another $1.3 trillion in government debt, borrowed from Social Security and foreign sources. Until we fix that- there ain't a chance in hell that the whole country will survive past 2015.

    I agree, but who is going to force the government and it is the government not just Bush. I don't like him and he may be the leader, but he does not make all of the decisions. So how does one go about collecting on a defaulted loan to the government?

    The obvious way is massive, violent revolution...failing that, you don't.

    There are different levels to reality. On the lowest level- competition between individuals and capitalism is a reality in the United States. On the next level up- competition between countries is a reality thanks to the WTO, and no country you are in direct economic competition with can be thought of as a friend. On the next level up from that- all economics is a human invention and can be changed. On the next level up from that- all reality is just percepetion, and thus objective evidence itself does not exist, so we can be certain of NOTHING.

    Yep- my alias really does say it all!

    Which is a major mistake in two big ways. One is that it leads to lies. The other is that this is supposedly a democratic republic- and in any given form of democracy, State Secrets simply make no sense. BATTLEFIELD secrets make sense. Secrets affecting CURRENT information gathering and battlefield situations make sense. Keeping secrets that have already been outed in the foreign press makes no sense. Keeping closed lips about what you did last week makes no sense. Keeping a tight lid on casualties when you should be having every damned funeral bradcast in an effort to give the hopeless and the homeless a reason to volunteer for your military in search of a life with meaning makes no sense.

    So much of what the neocons have done seem entirely opposite to their stated objectives that it makes them appear to be incompetent idiots at best- and dangerous subversives working for the terrorists at worst.

    Bush is just a liar- straight and outright. What I don't get is how after 4 years of screwing the little guy and promoting big business, he lost the election on Wall Street but won in Kansas? There's something awfully ass backwards about that- as the extreme "left" (and how did a bunch of eliteist wall street spend-$1000-on-an-omelette types end up the left wing anyway?!?!?) would put it, voting against their economic interests.

    Where his stance on illegal and legal-but-unwise-visa-system workers is exactly what attracts him to me. Of course, I'm largely centerist myself- get yelled at on the left for my stance on abortion and the population implosion, get yelled at from the right on my stance that perhaps creating huge corporations is not exactly the best use of resources.

    On another topic- it occured to me recently that for all of his kowtowing to big business, Bush fails to get their votes. Blue states have the largest businesses, red states are mainly providing raw resources for those big businesses. This seems ass-backwards to me....

    Doesn't matter according to Monsanto- and they won that case too.

    Ok, so explain the other type of lawsuit Monsanto is famous for- suing the NEIGHBOR of the guy they had the contract with for patent infringement for exactly the same basic action- just because the seed got blown over the property line by the wind.

    It's not "illegal" but a breach of contract. There's no *law* saying you can't replant the seeds.

    True enough- except for Monsanto has been successfull in suing farmers who DIDN'T SIGN THE CONTRACT for patent infringement, so it's also illegal.

    simple for the farmers. Don't buy their seeds.

    Not so simple- if your NEIGHBOR buys their seed, and you have the same type of crop, cross pollination by the wind could turn you into an Intellectual Property Pirate.

    And, of course, if you live in Portland, OR, to be a manager of a fast food restaurant (circa 2001-2003 anyway):

    Must speak spanish- so that you can talk to all the illegal immigrants in the kitchen (the counter, of course, has English speakers, but the kitchen help is all Mexican).

    Must not have any college background in credit check- skill means that you might leave if you find a job within what you really wanted to do, and so the company is not willing to train you to be a manager.

    From the news reports immediately after the Tsunami- how litterally thousands of people went down to the beach to look at the sudden "tide" going out...apparently they had never heard that if water leaves the beach, it will return. Now, of course, they'll never correct their stupidity- because they are all dead from that stupidity.

    It was quoted to me just this morning in a real-life conversation as a big reason why so many outsourcing projects fail- the lack of logical thinking is astounding, to say the least.

    The total time on screen of metallic cylons is about 60 seconds for the whole series.

    Which model? Humanoid, fighters, or base stars? After all, part of the premise of the new series is that there are THREE models of metallic cylons- unless they're going to have #6 strip down and strap on a jet pack of some sort I can't believe that ALL the scenes that should be metalic cylons have been taken over by humanoid ones....

    You should go ahead and watch the miniseries on sci-fi: NBC one was cut WAY down and took out a lot of character development (including my favorite exchange in the whole thing, see signature line). The President didn't even get Cancer in the NBC version?!?!?!?

    2nd reply- based on 10 discs, and the episode guide at Wikipedia, I'd say my first thought is just about right. Episodes 13&14 are "War of the Gods Part I & II" which were particularily bad in the original series (the other three episodes featuring the City of Light weren't nearly as annoying as their depiction of the Devil, thank the Lords of Kobol he only appeared in those two episodes).

    Especially since Paramount trashed the movie concept based on the bad box office from Nemesis. You can almost bet it's going to show up as a story arc in Enterprise.
