FWIW, this comes from Dan Savage's sex advice column. I can't find the original column, but here is a link: http://www.villagevoice.com/people/0349,savage,491 52,24.html Essentially, Savage was outraged by Santorum's rabid homophobia and wanted to coin a phrase based on his name. Since this is a family website, I won't tell you what he and his readers came up with, but you can read for yourself. Savage's column is one of the best. His attitude is usually do whatever you want as long as it doesn't hurt anyone. So he naturally gets pissed when senators like Santorum meddle in the bedroom

Well, actually, I had a friend who put a Chevy engine in a Porsche 914. Why? He replaced the original 80-HP four cylinder engine with a Chevy small block v-8. That thing went from 0-60 in a heartbeat.

For God's sake, be careful if you use propane or any other type of heater that is not intended for indoor use. Burning propane generates carbon monoxide, which is deadly and odorless, so make sure that the heater you use is properly vented. New York City just passed a law requiring all residences to have carbon monoxide detectors, following the deaths of three women from co poisoning due to a faulty flue. A search of a newspaper database for propane heater carbon monoxie poisoning turned up 327 articles. Remember that in 1994, tennis star Vitas Gerulaitis died from a faulty heater.

The reason that Mozilla and Firefox don't work with some sites that do worrk for IE, is that IE doesn't work very well with web standards. Developers are forced to write code that is non-standards compliant so that it will render properly in IE. This causes Mozilla and Firefox, which are standards compliant, to display pages 'improperly'. What some developers do is to write their HTML and CSS according to W3C guidelines, so they have valid code, then create a series of workarounds so that the code will render properly in IE. You can look at sites like simplebits.com and stopdesign.com to see how they've done this.

The Eudeamonic Pie by Thomas Bass tells the story of a few computer scientists who designed a system to beat roulette tables at casinos. I forget the exact mechanism, but they gathered statistics about the starting position of the wheel, the amount of time the wheel rotated and the final position of the ball. The fed this info into a custom-built computer (parts of which they hid in a shoe when in the casino). They couldn't predict the final numbers which came up, but could improve their odds enough that they were able to make some money

Thomas Bass' site has more info and a picture of the shoe

I used to work in a garage, and my boss would diagnose problems for free. Once, a customer brought in a Porshe with engine problems. He thought it was the fuel pump, and replaced it. Turned out that the problem was with something else (fifteen years ago, and I forget exactly what it was). He took out the new pump we put in, put back the old one, and gave the customer a full refund.

As for the pre-paying for support, Apple used to have a policy where when you called in for warranty service after a certain point, they would only support hardware repairs, not software problems. Softwware repairs cost fifty dollars, and of course, if after you called up for service and the problem turned out to be a software problem, they charged you. As an end user, I have no way of telling what the problem might be. In order to get my free hardware support, I had to take the chance that I would have to pay fifty dollars for the call.

I was pretty sure one time, though.

Me: Hi, I'm having problems with my Powerbook.
Tech: [spiel about software/hardware and the fifty dollar charge]
Me: I'm pretty sure this is a hardware problem - there's smoke coming from the keyboard.
Tech: Hmm, let me transfer you to the legal department.

Then several minutes of questioning ensued - do you feel dizzy, was any other property damaged (subtext: can or will you sue us), the laptop went back and was eventually fixed
