As America Remembers 9/11/2001, we must remember that we live in a country based on freedom. Those freedoms are being threatened right now because of America's reaction to 9/11, and we have to be careful about that.
So please, as you mourn, see your friends and family, or watch TV all day (which I hope you don't do), try to remember what it is that we're fighting for in the first place, ok?
Without those freedoms in tact.. there's nothing left to fight for.
I love you guys, tho, and I'm glad it wasn't any of you who were lost a year ago:-)

That's all fine and good. He bashes Benjamin Franklin's quote and uses that little buffalo stampede metaphor to try to make his point. However, my very simple argument is this: If I don't have my freedoms, then what the hell am I living for in the first place? I'd DIE for my freedom. I will not live without it. I will fight to the death for it, and it is probably one of the few things I would die for.
This guy says Quote : "The world needs the good fight for liberty, but ain't nobody gonna care about liberty if their DEAD. "
but I say he has it completely backwards. Ain't nobody gonna cair about security if they aren't free.
How many of you here would rather be safe and secure in your little houses and continue to be able to drive your SUVs and go to McDonalds and watch your sitcoms and guzzle your beer, but not be able to speak out or write what you want or burn a flag or protest or march or bitch about the President? Probably alot of you. That is what is wrong with this country today.
Not terrorism, not hate, not racism - those are all problems that can be somehow solved. Apathy, however, has almost no cure. It can be prevented, but once it starts it's just like that herd of buffalo this guy talks about. It can't be stopped because it has no intelligence.
Let me make it completely clear for you once more: Quote : "Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."
--Benjamin Franklin, 1759

Ok, first of all, DVD's should not be purchased at all, especially not by Slashdotters. We know the problems we are having with the "owners" of the things, so why are we not boycotting?
Secondly, want to see Akira? Rent it on video. It's an awesome film, an awesome Anime, and doesn't need cheesy voice-overs and cut out scenes to be cool.
Ok, here's the thing I wonder: Why pay for Napster when there's now the OpenNap protocol which lets any geek with a Linux box become a Napster server? Thats retarded. Just get more people to setup opennap servers and we're all set. There are already open-source clients.
Also, another ?. All these schools that are or arent blocking access to "napster", what are they actually blocking? The web page? certain ips? How does this work if there are so many open-source servers??
So how long until we can use this to replicate organic compounds such as food, ala Star Trek??? The end of world hunger??? I doubt it. We're not that generous. More chemical weapons and virii. More like it, baby.
here here, brother. this shit is getting ridiculous. if it were any more funny, we could make a comedy movie about it... oh but wait, if we did that then the mpaa would sue us for pronouncing the letters d-e-c-s-s in sequence, because its against the DMCA or something... retards...
I think this is great. Wish I had thought of it: the one thing that hasn't had a p2p file sharing proggie created for it:) I wonder if Nintendo and Sega will care, or if they will be smarter than that. We'll see...
right. and also, it won't matter about gnutella, because there is no central company to sue!!! and noone can do anything to you unless the fbi, police, etc. come directly to the culprit.. and since the # of culprits will probably be in the 100's of thousands , stop fretting adn have fun.
Personally - I understood him just fine. I enjoyed this article much more with no editing than I would have with it. Lars seems well spoken and smart, and even though he did ramble some, I think that anyone who says they didnt understand a word he said etc. was either just trying to find a last bit of insulting power or is just illiterate (i consider the latter unusual in a/. reader) so give the guy a friggin' break. Metallica did make a mistake by directly attacking the fans, but Lars makes a good point, and I think his rights and the rights of Metallica should be considered. Just because he makes music for you doesnt mean you own him ok? just my $.02
Oh "WHOOPS", We just arrested every computer security expert and linux user in the US because of a "glitch" in our computer system. Yeah friggin right. Democracy and freedom of expression my ass. The Constitution doesnt mean anything anymore, because they can use our own medium against us. Look at how this is working out, my friends: The very medium in which we thought we could always be free (the Internet) is the one thing that is allowing them to take away our RIGHTS. How very Orwellian. I know it sounds harsh, but wait a few years. I pray for us all.
What I wonder here is, what is the difference?? Think of it morally - you bought it, so you have that right. The RIAA won't know, and noone will think lesser of you for it.:)
Well, actually - if you knew the whole story you wouldnt be surprised: 2 people can't be logged onto the same account at the same time. I learned that one day when a friend logged onto my account while I was listening. It then plays a stream that says "we're sorry, but you tried ot access a file that is unavailable.." blah blah. Therefore, it makes it real hard. The only real pirating that could be done would be if someone borrowed a friend's cd and beamed it. But of course... noone would EVER do that:)
If ya can't beat 'em, move your servers to a country that treats it citizens like shit, but is still better than America because it lets us put our stuff there... or somethin' like that:)
Ok, here's my question: What exactly is being blocked from those schools? Is it the servers themselves, or what? I.E. if someone were to create a "bouncer" proxy server of sorts that students could connect to that the schools DIDNT have blocked, would that be possible? Thanks
So are all members of metallica. Here's my $.02: Dre is no longer popular. He will really have no fans now that he is suing them. He is a bitch, and deserves to lose money because he is violent and uncaring, or else he wouldnt distribute the music he does. He had it comin' to him since he became an "NWA"
I am a Freshman at NC State University, and our College Of Engineering has done the same thing. It has been around since last year, I believe. It is called EOS Linux, and it emulates the SunOS terminals in the labs. Very nice distribution, also a tweaked - up version of RedHat.

Does this mean that 2600 can keep the domain names they created, like verizonsucks.com, et. al?
I really liked this article.. and I agree. I'm going to see what i can do about researching this project idea a little.. keep up the good work.

HELLLL YEAH! THAT WAS AWESOME. what a talented geek ;)
God almighty!!! Did I miss "drop your brain and forget everything you ever learned in your entire life" day? AHHHHH!!!!!
An astute observation. I just hope you're right. This could be very, very bad if you're wrong.

funny though

BTW, the URL for that Distribution is http://www.linux.ncsu.edu/eos-linux .
