  1. Movies are 24 Hz Progressive, but... Re:24 Hz? on PS3 Firmware Update, Heavenly Sword Demo This Week · · Score: 1

Yes, movies are 24 fps. However, the way that a movie projector plays the movie, the projector actually projects each frame twice (i.e. 48 flashes of the light per second, not unlike how interlacing gives us the impression of 60fps for 30fps TV). However, on a tube based (CRT) TV, 24 Hz is ugly, very ugly. Your eye can't miss the flicker and if you are looking at the TV out of the corner of your eye, the flicker is so distracting that your eye will be drawn to the TV. Of course, on an LCD or Plasma, this wouldn't be an issue.

  2. To Steve Jobs on Universal Wants a Slice of Apple's iPod Pie · · Score: 1

    Re: Doug Morris

    Steve Jobs:

Please ignore the ravings of this raving, avaricious lunatic. You currently have one of the best models of on-line music store available, and as they say, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" As you know, the Zune is a piece of crap and not even a viable competitor to iPod so you need not worry about the ravings of Doug Morris who obviously does not understand any shred of modern technology. In fact, should Universal threaten to pull any of their music, simply show them the door and tell them not to let the door knob hit them on the way out. Giving in to Universal's demand for a "piracy tax" on all iPods is like asking Seagate to put a "piracy tax" on all their hard drives (I hope he doesn't read this and get any ideas). Please don't give in to this stupidity.

  3. Do you want to work or to tinker? on Advice for Linux on a Laptop? · · Score: 1

If you want to work, and be productive... stick with your first instinct, buy a MacBook. MacOS X is fast, stable, and reliable, plus any applications you will need are available for it, and any open source apps you may want are also available for it. Also, all your hardware will work out of the box. No fighting with [insert hardware name/type here] trying to get it to work. Your power management will work, no tweaking. In other words, you'll get work done instead of tinkering with your system.

If you want to tinker, get a windows box and put Ubuntu on it. Yes Ubuntu works great "out of the box." I run Ubuntu on my server and dual boot it on my Toshiba laptop and homebuilt desktop. Wonderful system, solves most of the Debian problems, but I find myself tinkering with it instead of doing work on it.

If you want the best of all worlds... buy the MacBook and triple boot it. You're getting a great laptop, you get the stability and reliability of MacOS X, it'll run windows, and if you really want Ubuntu, install Ubuntu on it as well.

  4. Cranium on Boardgame Recommendations For Xmas? · · Score: 3, Insightful
Cranium is one of the most fun board games I have ever played. I got it for christmas last year and we played it on christmas day. Most fun we've ever had. Some of the things you have to do in that game are an absolute riot. It is best described as Pictionary combined with Trivial Pursuit, combined with Charades, combined with Name that Tune.

  5. Look to the Future! on Videogames, HDTV and Widescreen 16:9? · · Score: 4, Insightful
This generation of consoles support limited HDTV features. The GameCube supports 480 lines progressive scanned (480p)(with a special video adapter) as mentioned above. The Xbox supports 1080 lines interlaced (1080i) on some games. Sony is planning on releasing a version of the PS2 that will support HDTV modes. Yes, games on all these platforms look great on a hi-res HDTV display, even if they don't support the hi-res features. Even the N64 looked great on a 16:9 HDTV. Everything is brighter and looks cleaner, period.

OK, here is the trick, this generation of consoles doesn't support HDTV, but the next generation will. Also, the HDTV Spec calls for a 16:9 formatted television. If you have bought a progressive scan 4:3 tv, you will have to watch TV letterboxed.

So the answer is, go ahead and buy your HDTV. You will love it. Your games will look great. Your next gen games will look even better. :-)

  6. Re:Yes, you probably can! Been doing it since '96. on The Incredible Shrinking Recording Studio · · Score: 1

I've been doing music composition since 1996 on my old 68030 based Powerbook 150. I have since moved to my P4 Windows XP laptop, but you can do it. The onboard sound on a laptop sucks for recording, but for MIDI programming it rocks. I do my recording direct to Hard Disk through an Audiophile 24/96 (M-Audio) card. The sound quality is like night and day from a consumer based card.

  7. Gamecube version victim of Multiple console owners on Game Sales Up As Madden Leads Charge · · Score: 3, Interesting

I think I know the reason that the gamecube sales are so low for Madden. For the first time, people own multiple consoles. I, for example, own both a PS2 and a GameCube. If I was going to buy Madden 2004, which console do you think I would buy it for, PS2 or GC? PS2 of course. Why? Online play. All the online game review sites have said that the PS2 version is the best because it is the only one that offers online play, even the Xbox one doesn't offer that (Which is why PS2 sales of madden are almost 5 times that of the Xbox). Another Example: Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance. 2 Versions, GC & PS2. I bought PS2. Why? All the reviews said the GC version was flawed. What have I bought For GC. Nintendo titles. F-Zero GX, Super Smash Bros., Metroid Prime, Super Mario Sunshine. The only non-Nintendo title I have for GC is Rogue Squadron 2. Why, because all the other titles are BETTER on the other platforms, and Nintendo's in house titles kick butt on their own. Sorry, didn't mean to rant. Just saw something obvious and thought I'd point it out. Dormous Listening @ the door of IT.

  8. Try Neal Stephenson... on Polybius Game Urban Legend Resurfaces · · Score: 1

Actually, that idea was also featured in the book Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson, which came out long before bandai's .hack//sign or their .hack//* games. Great book, highly recommended.

  9. Re:Chasing Amy was top of his game? on Renegade Reverse Engineering - John Woo Style · · Score: 1

Yes, Ben Afleck is a hack. Speaking of Kevin Smith films, I highly recommend watching Kevin's notes on the special edition DVD of Dogma. In said film, Kevin Smith absolutely blasts Ben Afleck for adlibing (poorly) and just ruining the script in general. Yes, Afleck Sucks.

  10. Fear among Artists: Translation on Artists Protesting Single-Song Downloads · · Score: 4, Insightful
"The fear among artists is that the work of art they put together, the album, will become a thing of the past."

    Translation:

The fear among artists is that the songs on their albums that SUCK will no longer be purchased by the consumer, meaning that they will have to write better "music" if they want to sell their music. These people don't put their own albums together, the producer does that. It also opens up the music industry to more competition, seeing as an artist no longer needs a WHOLE ALBUM in order to distribute music.

Only good can come of this, capitalism at its best!
