In the last couple of days Slashdot has looked horrible. "Reply" buttons are missing (except for this weird floating comment box on the left hand-side of the screen.
The look of the comments reminded me of edlin or a really bad ncurses setup. Odd blocks of inverted text all over the place and very few actual comments are visible.
I have been reading Slash for a long time, and I am not a newb; but I can't figure out why it looks so wrong/broken. I'm tempted to use lynx just to read the site.
I am using Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1.6) Gecko/20061201 Firefox/2.0.0.6 (Ubuntu-feisty). With the usual scripts: NoScript/Adblock.
...And allowing it to (dis)allow oppressive governments to continue to block/monitor Internet access.
This may have been a brilliant move on Googles' part. Fully cooperate with the Chinese governments' "Great Firewall" until they could put themselves in a position to undermine that authority.
The level loading screen have never been an issue for me (not including all the wasted years trying to play D&D and Ultima on my C64). What I do truly love in DS was the way that it handled leveling.
I know that it wasn't the first to 'invent' "If you primarily hack your way through battles, then your strength will increase." style of advancement; it felt the most natural.
Yes the game was too linear, yes the game had a few major bugs that allowed for level advancement at stupid speed. But I liked it.
(1) That the Pentagon doesn't have a Windows box connected to the Internet with a public IP address. (2) That the 'hackers' are smart-enough to actually hack into the Pentagon (ergo they are not script-kiddies).
Wouldn't these hackers be smart enough to originate these attacks from some-other hacked network via an anonymous proxy? (And then delete any logs that still might point to their activities.)
At the very least I would expect a simple IP spoofing to have taken place.
I fit into the camp of: Use the best tool for the job.
Most of the time I think that tool is Linux, but that is besides the point. I don't get Mac laptops. Why? I understand that OSX is the superior platform for audio/video/graphic work, but if I was doing that; I would want the beefiest hardware in a workstation I could get, not the "sacrifice power & upgradability" that you get with a laptop. So that brings us to the reason for laptops; "portable office machine". or Get the job done while on the go. Yes, I am aware that that you can get MS Office for Mac, but then how do you justify the price and general compatibility issues that would then arise in a mixed-OS shop?
In short; I don't get it. If you have a Mac Desktop, and need to do your audio/video work with on the go, then I can completely understand; but the sales numbers that they show, indicate that there are more laptops then desktops being sold.
I wish that makers of 3D films (primarily IMAX) would do this. Too often I would get a headache from trying to focus on the 'out-of-focus' background stuff. I always found it difficult to keep my eyes only on what the filmmaker wanted.
The funny thing about your statement is that is EXACTLY why I can't get my company to install Linux on the desktops....."But who could we sue if something breaks?"....
Yes I know that the EULA prevents MS from getting sued anyhow, but these damned PHBs are mentally impaired.
I pirate everything I can. Never paying for any of the software I use. I start using Debian on my servers. Wow this is better then NT!
I then start using it on my workstation, and discover I like it MORE then the free copy of Windows I had. I miss the games that I played (but never payed) on Windows. I miss the Apps like CorelDraw, MS Office, and all the games. But then I discover FREE software that works almost as good.
I now use Linux exclusively on my workstation, my Moms, my Wifes, my In-Laws, and a few of my Clients PCs too. I use Linux because it is better not because it is free.
I am in the market for a new laptop running Linux, (some flavor of Debian). I want:
Nvidia graphics (for OpenGL games) Built-in Bluetooth Full WiFi support. (for war-driving) Hibernation/suspend not a big deal. It'll probably be plugged-in 90% of the time.
This can only mean one thing! ATi/AMD will finally get its' head out of its ass and fix the drivers. First Dell is putting pressure on ATi and now with Lenovo selling Linux laptops with all those ATi chips there is serious pressure to fix the damn things.
I was a die-hard ATi fan starting with VGA Wonder-XL(ISA) until the Radeon 8500(PCI) series. After owning every generation of All-In-Wonder that they produced and never enjoying the usage of those products to the extent that was possible.
I am now in the market for a laptop, and the number of Nvidia laptops is slim. I hope this will encourage ATi to fix the damn things.
While the article (and most Geothermal articles) discuss using the heat from the earth to convert water to steam, or as a semi-passive heat-source for Winter-heating; why not connect a 'hot' water supply to a sterling engine and just use the temperature differential (where the geothermal-heat doesn't need to be deep/hot enough to convert water to steam) to generate electricity?
I have been looking for a decent GPS system that offers the following:
Real-time data tracking via USB or serial connected to a Linux laptop. Onscreen display of maps and directions Destination input via the unit. (Systems like the Garmin Quest only allow you to select places that you have already been to and "Save this Location") Bonus points if it is mobile.
It _must_ be linux compatable, I refuse to run Windows just to 'unlock' the device. I am willing/eager to use GPSBabel + Google Maps.
I know of several devices that fit 3-4 out of the above 5 points (like GlobalSat Bluetooth products). But it's not what i am looking for. And I find the elite attitude in the GPS forums to be the worst combination of #fluxbox & #gentoo. =)
I hate cigarettes and smoke. Dispise, loathe, pick your synonym.
I am interested in nicotine though, (in addition to IT work I am also a Truck driver) because of the calming effect and other 'side-effects' that smoking offers. So I have been thinking of trying "The Patch" (lowest dosage patch first).
Not knowing a thing about anything in question; this is what I would do:
The Dune Fremen suits come to mind;
Have the movement and breathing of the soldiers provide the power input. Crystals (quartz and others?) emit electricity when pressure is applied so set them up at all the joints.
I hate to sound like " ..a brain-dead AOL'er..." but me too!
After my TV dies I will be buying a projector so that I can watch movies and TV episodes off of my PC.
What "Top-5" websites are in your daily/hourly must-read rotation? (Not counting RSS)

I know why they stopped doing it, but I wish these CPU * Video card companies would use actual model numbers ala 386SX/386DX, 486DX/486Dlc etc...
I also know that lead to ridiculous over use that we currently see in video cards 9800XX-Max-Super-X.
It might actually bring back some truth to the consumer.
686-Mobile/2.2GHz vs 686/3GHz vs 4c868/1.8Ghz

My thoughts exactly.
Another future customer AMD, good job.
I thought I should point out that any room that you have a PC in, is at room temperature.

Lets make a couple of assumptions..

This was too easy, something is up.
Aside from the obvious concerns; this sounds like a great tech that could allow ....
shit everything I can think of is evil..
sorry. =)
I would gladly donate my left kidney to the person who makes this available for "focusing" the active window.
I LOVE the evolution of "Focus Follows Mouse" but dammit even my Fluxbox isn't fast enough to keep up with where I am looking.

Please explain this to me.

Base your (metric)work on how long things are NOT broken.
i.e. Well I was 92% effective yesterday because I had to replace a switch.
The funny thing about your statement is that is EXACTLY why I can't get my company to install Linux on the desktops. ...."But who could we sue if something breaks?"....
Yes I know that the EULA prevents MS from getting sued anyhow, but these damned PHBs are mentally impaired.
My first thought was; "But I thought Reavers were fake?!"
Or this is what has happened in my case.
I pirate everything I can. Never paying for any of the software I use. I start using Debian on my servers. Wow this is better then NT!
I then start using it on my workstation, and discover I like it MORE then the free copy of Windows I had.

I feel bad enough when one of my 500GB drives goes tits up, I would hate to loose that much data on one drive.
But on the other hand, a full-tower case loaded with those in a raid5 is enough to make me drool.

I forgot one othe major item. Data Logging.
I need it to save tracks/waypoints for later downloading to the PC (for GPSBabel & Google Maps)

Anybody ever try anything similar?
