Except that LinuxMCE is broken, doesn't work, and support from the developers is poor.

Infact it is un-installable (unless they fixxed it last night, and I have not checked). How many other FOSS project offer 'support' via Skype and YIM? Yes it is a nifty idea, but only if the devs actually log-in to those accounts. IRC remains barren. IRC is ideal because many people get to see/share the info that is posted. The official forums seem to be devoid of any dev interaction, and the bug-report might be falling on deaf ears for all the confirmation of bugs I have posted.

I love the concept of this project. I dearly wish it would work.

I have been given these 'contracts' at the last three jobs that I have accepted, and on all three I print next to my signature:

This has only been questioned once and that one time it was allowed after I explained that (a) it was unconstitutional because the company was not paying me a specific retainer, and therefore didn't "own" my thoughts; (b) I promised to not to work on anything that could be considered a competing product; and (c) if they didn't accept it as a condition of my employment then give me a cheque right now for my time, because if I spend any additional time there then their acceptance of my terms of the contract indicated acceptance of my conditions.

Most of the time it's a standard form that the HR drones don't know anything about, or even care about. All they want is a signature because that is what gets put in their folder.

  18. A warning about Vista Mail... on Nvidia Faces Class Action Lawsuit Over Vista Drivers · · Score: 2, Informative

Just thought I should warn a few of you about an annoying bug in the new "Windows Mail" (vista equivalent of Outlook Express).

In Mail each email is downloaded and saved to the computer as an .eml file (as opposed to OE where it all gets downloaded to a .dbx database).

If you are sent a virus and have anti-virus software running the AV software will catch & delete the .eml file (sounds ok so far)

The bitch of the situation is that Win-Mail will still show that email in your inbox, but you cannot remove it (or view it) because the file is missing.

So the only fix is to restore to a previous version, disable the AV, download the message & delete it.

    This could be annoying/amusing.

Make life easy for yourself - there is nothing simpler than Artist/Album.

But finding music if I am in the mood for something fast and frantic for fragging in a FPS genre - artist can't be beat.
I can't/won't run itunes because I use Linux.

My sorting method worked fine in the mid-90's when I started because most of my collection was small, now that I have a HUGE collection, it's not so simple.

One of these days I'll just give-up the thought/effort of browsing my files manually and just use Amarok to play all my songs.

  20. Another good use for labels.. on Labels Not Tags, Says Google · · Score: 5, Insightful

I have made extensive use of the 'label' feature in gmail like I am sure many others here have too and I have found it very handy. Another aspect of my computing life that I found DESPERATELY needed labels was my music collection.

I have always organized my music in Genre - Artist - Album - song format, but I have found that too many songs would be multi-genre.
(ie. most modern Top40 songs today are also Rap/Dance/Hip-Hop)

So as a result my collection became mass-sorted into one of four major directories:

    Rock/Alternative
    Pop/Top 40/Rap/Hip Hop/Dance/Techno
    Blues/R & B
    Other

The ability to 'quickly find' a desired song became impossible.

Along came iTunes and it was awesome, but lacking.
Along came Amarok and it was better, but lacking.
Now Amarok has added a new feature called Labels, and I am in love (but it is still lacking).

Now I can ignore the Genre headache, and just use labels to identify what Genres of music that apply to the song.

This works only as long as I use Amarok for my music player. I am still SOL if i want to just browse the filesystem and grab a couple of songs on the spur of the moment.

What we need is a file system label structure that can/will apply to all files that we use.
    Where to store Aunt Betty's cookie recipe? ~/docs/recipes ~/docs/aunt betty/ ~/docs/cookies

A bad solution is to create sym-links everywhere. A better solution would be to have labels appear as virtual directories.

    ie.

    EVERYTHING on Discovery & TLC

I yearn for impartial & unbiased educational programming that I enjoyed in my youth. Now-a-days it seems that if they don't "wow" you in the first 10 seconds they think they have failed.

An excellent example is Nature shows.
    Old goodness:
Lorne Greens New Wilderness, Nature, Undersea Adventures of Jacques Cousteau *, Profiles of Nature.

    New Badness:
Croc Hunter**, Fox Special "Worlds most Amazing/Dangerous Animals", etc.

    * Jacques Cousteau was Very preachy but (a) it was needed at that time, and (b) it was the first of it's kind.
** I loved how passionate Steve Irwin was about animals, and the first Season of Croc Hunter was awesome. But IMHO I think the show got too much attention and turned into a Jerry Springer of Nature shows and lost it's credibility.

I do not have the attention span of a flea on crack. Take your time and explain the science behind what you are trying to show. I donate to PBS, but only on the 'heavy-science' shows. Alas it seems they don't get the message.
