  3. Rumored Trade-in Plan for new HMCs on The Rocky TiVo-DirecTV Relationship · · Score: 5, Informative

Here is the rumored trade-in plan to get the new HMCs. It is very generous but I hope they stick to it.

    HMC Cost update.

    Latest info:

Two base (HD HMC) units with different capacity.

    1) 240 GB - $499 + $99 for SD units and $199 for HD remote units
    2) 480 GB - $599 + $99 for SD units and $199 for HD remote units

    Trade in Values:

HD-TiVo -> High capacity unit + 2 HD remote units
SD TiVo -> Low capacity Unit + 1 SD remote unit
SD Receiver -> Low Capacity unit and 1 SD for every three (3) SD receivers.
It's basically a price match. For example, if you have two SD TiVo's and an standard HD unit, you can obtain the High Capacity + 1 HD remote unit in exchange.

Values on units for trade in:

Standard SD Receiver - No value for HMC - 1 for 1 on SD remote units
Standard HD Receiver - Low cap HMC or 1 HD Remote unit
1 TiVo - Low Capacity HMC + SD Unit
2 TiVo - High Capacity HMC + SD Unit, or High Capacity + SD Unit

    Dollar Value:

    SD Receiver $99
    HD Receiver $399
    TiVo $199
    HD TiVo - $899

I anticipated identity theft many years before most media outlets were reporting about it. I took it upon myself the to a comprehensive plan into action more than 10 years ago. Below is my six step plan for avoiding identity theft.

    1) Get a credit card when you are young and abuse the hell out of it then do not pay the bill.

    2) Avoid paying your monthly utility bills on time.

    3) Get a secured Visa from your bank and then do not pay those bills, finally letting the card fall into default and then the bank keeps your secured deposit.

    4) Get many Cell phone plans and do not pay those bills.

    5) Buy merchandise on no interest plans and then just disappear.

    6) Write checks with no money in the bank. The resulting checks will bounce and cause many warrants put out for your arrest.

Now following this 6 step plan will cause your credit to just basically suck and if any thief decides your identity is his next target he will have a nice little surprise when he tries to get that new credit card in your name. In fact I have found that this can lead to more arrests of the identity thieves by causing the police to come look for me for bad debt and busting the crooks red handed.

Good answer. ;-) That makes perfect sense then and explains how we have 3 digital channels all next to each other in Atlanta. I always wondered how they were able to run 19,20,21 next to each other. I hate that the VHF band is still going to be used. I have only one VHF station and it is a pain to have my UHF Bowtie and then have to have a supplemental VHF directional for one channel. It will be a moot point once DirecTV gets their new birds up though. As soon as I have a DVR on those puppies I am taking an axe to my mast. ;-) Thanks again for the explanation.

  7. Re:altho.... on FCC Extends Set-Top Box Deadline · · Score: 1

I do not see how moving to digital is going to free up any bandwidth. Broadcast HD channels are using the same spectrum as non-HD channels. Mostly UHF and in some towns VHF for a few. The only thing that is using more bandwidth is the stations are broadcasting on 2 channels for the moment, one for Analog and one for digital. When the analog is turned off, it is rumored that they will give the stations the choice to go back to a VHF channel if the original analog signal was a vhf channel. The digital channels will still be spread out across the same alotted spectrum for analog signals. I have never understood the argument that this will free up bandwidth for other uses. Anyone?

It will not be 1500 channels for everyone. By law DirecTV and Dish and every other SAT provider have to provide all the locals to all the folks. Meaning if they offer locals to Atlanta then they have to offer all the locals to every other city they beam too. So this means they have to carry even the crap networks that are available via an antenna. 1500 channels quickly pair down to 5-10 locals for each city they provide locals too. This is one reason they created the spot beam tech. They can use the same transponder to beam Atlanta locals to Atlanta and refocus a new feed to Alabama cities. This is a crude explanation but I am drunk right now and am to tired to explain further. Cheers, John.
