  1. Re:A good question. on Mac OS X 10.2.8 Available · · Score: 1
Good point. I am certain when they do benchmarks, they are using "clean systems", meaning everything has been wiped and the system is running at top notch. However, in the real world, it never works like that. Fragging on the HD will slow a system down in a big way. My laptop was fast... once.

As for the update, my system froze and I had to reboot. It actually took longer to reboot and I had to update my screen resolution, as it put it in 800x600. I am not sure it is faster to me.. But, I was satisfied with it. I did think, when I made the switch, that the OSX was slower than Windows. Just not as snappy. So, it might be faster, and I just haven't noticed..

Well.. The only update I have ever done to speed up any of my PCs was to reinstall. However, reinstalling Windows 2000 or newer requires so many reboots to get up-to-date patches it isn't even funny. And, of course, once the OS is installed and configured and the applications running on it, it slows back down to a crawl. I have an IBM thinkpad T30. 2Ghz, 1GB mem, 60GB hd... and when doing anything, it will pause to thrash on the HD. Really sucks when you are doing development work.. I must say, since I switched, I check fairly often for the updates, especially when I know something is out there. And, for the most part, I instantly want the updates, unlike MS Windows where I tell the updater to skip them, for the umpteenth time. As for the EULA, and I admit this, I never read them. Hardly anyone else does either. It's that or be stuck with a system that's as vulnerable as a nice car sitting on the street in manhattan at midnight in a dark alley. Why even ask for a password on Windows? It matters?

But how does it compare in size and wieght. I don't have the T68 (a friend is sending me his today), but they are light and visually pleasing. This phone is... ugly, in my opinion.

It would have looked much better (and cleaner) had he mounted those bad-boys in FireWire boxes and had a few ports. Less cabling, each with it's own power supply. It would certainly make it easier to move and manage, not only that, if he is using MAXTOR drives, easier to replace (I have bad luck with Maxtor).

But, on the geek factor... nice. :)

Now the real question... what's all the disk space for?

  7. Re:Is this unique? on Apple Publishes Keynote XML Schema · · Score: 1

That is correct. My main "work" system is a ThinkPad with Office 2000. I also have a 12" PowerBook for work. When I move the corporate presentations from Win PPT to Keynote, I get some issues: Graphics disappear, Bullet-types change, and some other issues (fonts, etc). It does take a few to get it working. But, I like Keynote. I wish the conversion process was better.

  8. Re:Is this unique? on Apple Publishes Keynote XML Schema · · Score: 1

I have exported to Quicktime and found it to be quite useful. You can even set it to pause for each slide (a great feature). It's a great way to present to people on other platforms. Too bad it doesn't have a full screen export. Another feature missing in KeyNote is the ability to have the presentation start without opening and closing KeyNote (like PPS in PPT).

  9. Re:Is this unique? on Apple Publishes Keynote XML Schema · · Score: 5, Informative
There's just one problem. The improt routine of KeyNote is not even close to being perfect. Every time I import one of the PPt presentations from work to use on my Mac, I spent 20 minutes cleaning things up. Some images don't come in, some things are changed, bullet points, etc.

It certainly seems doable, but once it gets into Keynote, let the tweaking begin before you save it/export it.

  10. I have one. on 12" Powerbook: Slick and Sexy, But Not Without Issues · · Score: 3, Interesting
I picked mine up this week. Sure, it's a little warm, but nothing more than my t30 thinkpad or my athlon based hp notebook. But I can say this, the "cool" factor is certainly there. It has more style that either of my other laptops combined. I was at a work function this week and everyone I work with got new T30s,but the true hit was when I opened up my 12 Powerbook. Everyone wanted to play with it. It has very clean lines, a great screen, longer life battery and all the ports I need, save one. I wish it had a PCCARD. But, having an internal 802.11g port and Bluetooth builtin is very cool. My wife, a non-geek to the core, wishes her hp had an internal 802.11b port, as she has bumped the card a few times.

All-in-all, the laptop does get warm, and I think people feel it a little more than other laptops because of the casing, but, I can touch the back of the LCD display without getting the "water effect".

As the VP of R&D said in a presentation this week, "I said we would support apple over my dead thinkpad. We are about to support apple, and it is cool!".

I agree with what many people said here. However, I think there is more to it. I had a Creative Nomad Jukebox 3 and enjoyed it, but it had several fatal flaws the iPod doesn't: Size. The size of the Creative unit was like a like a CD Player on steriods. I have an MP3 CD player that was much smaller. Navigation (interface). The interface makes or breaks the device. On the Jukebox (archos or creative), the user interface is sometimes counter intuitive. If you want to find just a group or album, there's a lot of work. On my iPod, I can get to any album or artist quickly. Screen updates are fast, whereas the NJB3 (the one I used most prior to the iPod) was a dog as I waited forever for the menu options and kludgy layout. For me, I have a large MP3 collection mainly from my CDs, navigation of the screen makes or breaks the device. I liked my NJB3 (two replaceable batteries) and I used it often (especially in the TankBag on my motorcycle), but the iPod is all that and more. The Archos jukebox can be used as a harddrive, whereas the Nomad JB3 couldn't. However, neither of them compare to the iPod for simplicity, easy of use, and size. It's that simple.

I have DishNetwork. I can record programs on my PVR (PVR501) and it works fairly well. It is not as sophisticated at Tivo, but works quite well. My favorite features are live pausing and rewind, plus recording of programs. Imagine if Sirius or XM gave that capability to their systems? They already are sending a digital signal, much like the Satellite Broadcast Systems, so it could just be an additional hard drive away. You would need a little 5 GB hard drive, record it to MP3 or some other compressed format and organize it. It would be great!

That are going to create the New World Order. I don't agree that California has any rights over anyone not in the state, otherwise we become subject to laws where we may never have been. However, I believe that cases like this will push for more international standardization of laws through the United Nations. You cut off this head, and another will appear. The true problem isn't Kazaa, but the byzantine practices of the recording industry. They refuse to adapt and change. Isn't it ironic that a DVD movie costs less than it's soundtrack? Movie companies are worried, but at least the business is still thiving. I hear, on the news, how the music industry sales are down 8% last year. Great! Maybe they will come up with some compelling music this year I will buy. I have a large CD collection but I also download music. The difference between what I buy and what I download? The stuff I download is not compelling enough to purchase. In fact, some stuff I have downloaded has led me to purchase stuff. When will they get it?
