    Same here.

Maybe I only buy 10 CDs a year, and maybe that doesn't impact the RIAA's bottom line significantly, but seriously, if enough people are fed up with their bullshit and stop buying CDs, then eventually the artists will turn to alternative distribution methods in order to make a profit.

So we'll be less competitive with exports. Personally, I think that while this might hurt us in the short run it'll be better in the long-term for Canada. Why? SO WE DON'T HAVE TO DEAL WITH ANY 30% TARRIFFs WHEN THE U.S. THROWS A TIFFY!! (which they seem to do anytime we're actually more productive at something than they are...)

It's called American protectionist policies. And the more Canada can protect its industries from them, the better! (IMO)

  9. First Edition was quite good. on PHP and MySQL Web Development, 2nd Edition · · Score: 5, Insightful

I picked up the first edition, not because I really needed to learn PHP (I was already comfortable with it), but so that I'd have something I could use as a reference. I have to say that I was EXTREMELY IMPRESSED with the first edition. It is actually my favorite programming book (out of maybe 30 that I've bought for school and fun). I like how the book progresses quickly through each chapter. And not quickly as in skipping over the details (like some other books out there), but in that they only present the info that you need, and encourage you to look up things in the online documentation for more detail. I also really liked the projects that they went through at the end of the book. It's nice to see practical applications for all of the things that the book went through. ... and for everyone who says it's only PHP and you can just use the online docs, well, I don't know about you, but I'm not exactly going to break out my laptop to do some reading on a city bus! ;)

  10. Sentencing for Convicted Spammers on How to Become A Spammer · · Score: 4, Interesting

When a spammer is actually caught, rather than fining them, I submit this incredibly complex formula for determining PRISON time.

1 second in prison, for every email that they've sent.

So if a spammer is caught, and after they raid his computers they figure he did 10 million emails that week, that would be...

    10 000 000 / (24 * 3600) = 115 days in prison (roughly 4 months, for that week)

I think that would work out to a managable amount of time (ie something that won't overflow the prisons). It also would make things easier since the authorities would only need to analyze a relatively small set of data to get proof and sentencing (ie this month's ISP logs)

Or even if it wasn't prison-time, they could easily be forced to manual labour for the city the live in or something... (preferably something like cleaning sewers, but basically anywhere that manual labour is needed...)

    sound like a good idea?

If you're criticising Farscape, I'm really hoping that you've actually watched more than two episodes. The comment I made about leechers obviously wasn't for people just starting out. By leecher I meant someone who uses the system and simply doesn't share any files and moves everything out thier download directory as soon as it completes. Obviously you wouldn't expect anyone with nothing to share to contribute much, however as they download stuff and build up an archive of files, they would be expected to have at least some of it as shared in order to 'contribute back to the community' from which they got their files.

  16. Leechers Suck! on Shutting down Kazaa · · Score: 5, Interesting

You do realize that if all everyone did was leech then the entire system would collapse right??

I like the way that Overnet does things. Your max download speed is 4X your upload speed. This forces people to use their upstream bandwidth, even if they're not sharing anything (which is evil in itself) as the temp files are all also shared (so anything you're downloading can be downloaded by other people until it's completed).
