    From TFA:

    InPro's patent described the use of a proxy server which downloaded data from the Web in response to a request from a device, then transposed the data to match the specific size and resolution of the device, according to The Times. The patent in question was granted in 1996.

    And here I was — silly me — thinking that this sort of thing consituted a "method" and was therefore unpatentable in the UK! From the UKPO's web-site, the following are excuded:

    • a discovery;
    • a scientific theory or mathematical method;
    • an aesthetic creation such as a literary, dramatic or artistic work;
    • a scheme or method for performing a mental act, playing a game or doing business;
    • the presentation of information, or a computer program.

    Don't 5, and possible 4, call this whole game into question?

    So the choice of a UNIX platform has come and bit Apple in the ass. Could somebody tell me again why Apple abandoned its perfectly functional OS9 code? I didn't see anything wrong with the old Macs. What was the benefit of basing it on the legally ambiguous (and dying) BSD? And what's with this ugly DOS throwback? Who wants to see an old-fashioned text terminal on their computer?

    why would someone go pay good money for a mac, only to install RadHat?

    Because:

    • having one menu bar at the top of the screen is inappropriate for displays with ~1000 pixels in both directions
    • they hate DRM
    • they otherwise dislike/are frustrated by the whole "Mac Experience"
    • they'd like a whole bunch of software like LaTeX and other Free Software greats bundled
    • they like hacking on an operating system
    • they develop software for Linux
    • they know how a computer works

    and, Heaven forbid:

    • they actually like Linux better than OSX!

    Yes! There are people like that out there! Now, why don't you ask a sensible question like, "why would someone go pay good money for a Mac, only to install FreeBSD?" Oh, wait...

    Ah 64k of RAM (48k of which was available to the user), that takes me back.

    Remember Spindizzy, that isometric 3D game with all the different screens to explore? The whole map fit in 11 kiB.

    They don't make them like they used to.
