  1. Re:It's a bit late, isn't it? on Intuit Apologizes to Turbo Tax Customers · · Score: 1

They probably were taking all this time to try to implement another form of DRM technology, but couldn't roll it out in time, hence this notification in October, and not in Jan/Feb.

  2. automatic update might not work properly on some on Microsoft wants Automatic Update for Windows · · Score: 1
I noticed my system had a critical update notice each time I rebooted, and I dutifully applied the new patch each time, and about the 3rd patch, I noticed that it was _the same patch_ being downloaded, it just wouldn't take on my system.

Imagine, MS might DOS themselves to death with this automatic update feature.

I want one of these machines! Then I can be an Evil Criminal Genius.

Wait a moment, we've already got Bill Gates.
He's probably up in his throne room right now pulsing his brain or something. That's probably how he got where he is. Of course, Steve Jobs and him will probably get in a competition and start sucking Washington and California's power dry by using this all day to enhance thier brains. Actually, haven't there been a lot of brownouts in California latley... hmmm. makes you think, dosen't it.

  4. problem a few years ago, not now. on The Little Coder's Predicament · · Score: 1
I think that the problems with not being able to find a programming language have gone away in the last few years. The worst time to learn was right when I was learning to program, before the internet and linux took off, and when BASIC fell out of favor. I'd say about '92-'95ish

I ended up buying CodeWarrior limited edition for Mac not really too sure of my $70 purchase.( It was sure the best one I've ever done though!)
Now, anyone who buys OS X has developer tools included. Cool! And PHP, Perl, etc, whatever language flavor of the month you want to learn can be downloaded for free on whatever platform of the month your using.

I think a greater problem is with standardization of languages. There's so many out there now, I've learned C, C++, PHP, Perl, LISP, Python, BASH scripting, Ruby, Ada, plus all the Linux commands, and some proprietary database stuff, macromedia director Lingo, javascript, (D,X)HTML, XML, Mac toolbox commands a few years ago, remember CopyBits() anyone!? it's just blowing my mind now. Give me a break!.
Jeez, I never knew I had this rage inside me.

  5. We Are A Simulation of a Simulation on The Computational Requirements for the Matrix · · Score: 2, Insightful

One can go farther than just saying that we are a simulation created by an original race. We are a simulation with the ability to reason and create our own simulation. Therefore it would be possible for a simulated race to create another simulated race, and we could be the 3rd, 4th or nth simulation, with no simulation above us cognizant they are a simulation. Furthermore, simulations need not be run in real-time, they could be run quicker than real-time. However, I argue that each simulation of a simulation will generate some innacuracies, and after a certain number of iterations, simulations would not be self-sustaining; the population would notice the innacuracies. I however, have noticed no innacuracies to date. Therefore if we are living in a simulation of a simulation, we are likely constrained by a finite number, perhaps the 100th simulation or less of a simulation.

  6. We need a candidate for the Linux platform. on Elect Steve Jobs President of the United States · · Score: 1

I bet someone running for president on the Linux platform would get quite a few votes. There's probably more people that would vote for someone running for president on the Linux/open software/anti DRM platform than have voted for other parties, such as the libertarians... it'd make for more public recognition of Linux, too. Mabye the EFF could organize the effort?

  7. What if Intuit goes bankrupt? Can't be activated on TurboTax Activation Fiasco · · Score: 1

The general problem with this activation scheme is that in say, 40 years from now, Intuit might not be around anymore to activate the software. Heck, they might even go down next year. If they go down tomorrow or 40 years from now, I can guarantee that people will be affected by this. This activation scheme is NOT in the best interest of the consumer.
