My guess, expect for maybe one or two devices on t-mobile and at&t, nokia in US is synonymous with el cheapo throwaway phones.

Basically, nokia pissed of the big carriers by refusing them access to the firmwares (so they could neuter such things as bluetooth file transfer). And now said carriers wont sell high end nokia phones with contract.

Single cable, never even bothered trying with a Y-cable as that will by definition not work if the hub is un-powered.

And yes, it could be a case of the motherboard being a bit more tolerant. Hard to say without attaching a multimeter and perhaps running a protocol sniffer while attaching the drive to the hub, and then comparing that to attaching it to a motherboard port.

Still, the drive in question specifically came with a non-Y cable. So it should not require a tolerant port, unless QA at the company sucks...

At least if both the devices and the hubs where well behaved. I can't get 2.5 drive to spin up unless i plug it into the pc directly or a powered hub.

I am unsure if want plays much into it. The computer industry is still young, the generation that trained themselves to use the early mac is still around in various offices and teaching positions. As such, they pass on to the next what they themselves learned by rote. This results in training of memorized buttons and actions, not concepts that can be applied anywhere. Basically, one is programming robots/monkeys. And the industry don't mind, as they can squeeze more value out of their hardware and software investments this way. That is, the choice between a mac or a pc ends up being a choice between working the desired job or not. Not being from USA, i can tell when someone is studying some art topic. How? it's the student with the mac. Even people that was happily using anything else before they started studying said topic ends up using a mac.
