You are a car manufacturer, and make a new kickass car. Now OPEC gas is not elite enough for this new car of yours, so you make this additive which adds octane to the OPEC gas.

The kiddies that buy your car go to the gas station, and they buy gas which has the additive in it, which they pay more for (or the same considering microsoft isnt going to make it cost MORE for the improved CE), and the money from the gas all goes to the OPEC gas company.

You developed the additive, but do not benefit by the sale of it.

Good for you. Especially concerning the part about gifts/flowers for mourning colleagues.

I think Microsoft, and a variety of other corportations are missing the big picture here. First, the best and easiest way to make people work harder/better for the company is to make them feel like what they are doing matters, and that they are important. Especially in technical work, I can either do 2 hours of work and stare at my monitor for 6 hours a day, or if I feel motivated I can do 7-8 hours of work.
Just because they are a temp does not mean that the company does not have a stake in how hard their employees are working...they are usually doing the same tasks as regular employees, which are generally quite important.

Consultants or temps should NOT get a benefits package, consisting of medical, dental, and other coverage. The reasons for this are obvious, full timers earn this as a reward for being dedicated and committed to remaining at a company, and it is incentive to become a full timer (not to mention opportunity for abuse).
However, they should be treated in every other way as a regular employee, the company benefits the most from that. A happy worker is a hard worker.

This brings me to my second point, that for the small costs involved in, for example, sending flowers to an employee who lost someone close, inviting contractors/temps to employee parties, all of these small bonuses we enjoy while working, are tiny in comparison to potential gains in productivity.

Buy the bastard 10$ in cheap wine at the company party, bring him out on the company golf day, you are renting the whole course anyways!

I am sure there will magically be happier employees who do more work, get to work on time, and who knows...maybe when you are looking for a full timer he will apply and you will save a whole lot in training costs.

    Hell, buy him cheap champagne!

  15. Re:Runtimes/power sources? on Robodex 2003 Shows Robots Ready for Work & Play · · Score: 1

Interesting. So since the most troublesome part about recharging involves finding and getting to the base station, why not have the base station replace the battery in the robot.

For example, with web-cam robots, have several of them, and train then to return to the station when they are running low on battery (easier said than done, because depending on their distance from the recharge station they need to go at different times, unless the max distance does not vary too much from the average distance then you could have it so that the maximum power they need from the maximum distance they could be away, they should start returning when they have that much power)

But anyways, then have some sort of mechanized "robot" station which replaces the battery instead of having them just attach to a charger. 24/7 operation of such robots is a definate advantage that I could see of using robots, and why sacrifice it just because you have one battery instead of 2 or 3.

Interestingly enough though, the tough thing to do is going to be have them return to their base station, and avoid obstacles in doing so.

    Fun, fun, fun with robots!!

I have no idea why your post got trolled.

I seriously would like to see the power sources being used as well, it provides an interesting perspective of robots...

What would be ideal is have two sets of removeable batteries for the robot, as well as one smaller battery which always remains in the robot. Then, when the robot senses its power is getting low, it goes to the battery charger and switches batteries, while using auxilary power during the time when he does not have either battery in him.

Similarly, another option could be a "sleep" mode where when the robot senses his batteries are going low he goes and sits in a charger until he is replenished.

This is a very important part about robotics, because if I buy a robot to clean my floor and fetch me my beers, I sure as hell do not want to carry the 500 pound hunk of metal to his charger when he runs out of juice!
