I didn't know about ad block until I read this article. It just made me go out and install it right away. Screw this pig porker! If his sites only survive because of add revenue it means he has a $h!tty site with nothing worthwhile on it. So that means I have no need to visit them. Way to go D!ckhe@d make your problem public and p!$$ off tons of people in the process. Now you'll really have to survive on ad revenue.
A fraction of the Muslim world wants us dead. Period. They've been blowing up a handful of people and a boatload of innocent bystanders (many times, Muslims as well) JUST because they're American or Jewish, for nearly half a century. See the Kobar Towers (sp?), see Beruit, see Bali, and hundreds of other places where the crime was being in a place where radicle Muslims could reach a detonator. Let's also not forget that 9/11 was _before_ we continued the war against Saddam, which was halted in a ceasefire, not victory. Then the ceasefire was breached 492 times by Saddam firing at the aircraft enforcing the no-fly zone.
I've been saying for a long time that there is no such thing as middle east peace. It won't happen - period. I don't know why politicians waste their time and our tax dollars on it. No one over there wants peace. They just want the destruction of everyone but themselves, even within the muslim factions. They want to kill other muslims. Islam is about peace?? Give me a F@#$ing break! Iraq should tell you somthing there. You have Suni's and Sheite's killing each other with the kurds on the side. In Afganastan you have the Taliban and all the other muslim tribes fighting each other. But Islam is about peace.... My thought has been lets just turn the whole middle east into a giant glass factory. It would solve a lot of their problems and ours faster than wasting time on "middle east peace". At least it would be realistic.
Just remember - if your from the U.S. - I may not like what you say and you may not like what I say, but we have to defend each others RIGHT to say it.
Companies won't pay that kind of money. They will tell you, you cost to much and will ship your job overseas to India! "You cost us $52/HR, they only cost us $27/HR." If the company needs to cut costs the jobs that aren't out right cut will be outsourced overseas. Programmers are the biggest target as they can pay Indians less. This is FACT! But companies ALWAYS fail to realize that many times the quality is in the toilet of what you get. You get what you pay for!
Experts use better tools and care deeply about their craft. They aren't assembling bits on an assembly line, they are crafting a unique product to solve a unique problem. Experts are lazy, they work smarter rather than harder. Experts prefer the easiest solution that gets the job done. Experts aren't interested in creating complex solutions simply to have the complexity, that misguided egoism is the territory of more junior developers. They often get it right the first try and almost always on the second one.
Simply put, experts write readable code. They comment and document it appropriately based on the complexity and criticality of that particular piece of code.
All of this pays huge dividends when the next developer has to pick up where they left off. Especially if the next person isn't an expert.
From these statements I consider myslef an "expert" then. I like to think I fit into everyone of these items.
I have worked with way to many developers that fit this bill:
Sub-standard programmers drag down the efficiency of your other developers with beginner questions, poor comments/documentation, and bad code that someone else will later be forced to spend time fixing.
I can't count how many times I have had to re-write stuff that was such bad code it should have never been written in the FIRST place! I wish I got paid $120K (I make quite a lot less that) for being an expert - instead I'm being outsourced to India eventually (as soon as they take over all our projects) - because I and my fellow developers "cost too much".
Show me a company that -wants- a developre with 21+ years experience and has done it all in IT and -wants- an expert and will pay $100K - $120K for that expertise and not just outsource it. Good luck, I doubt you will find one.
Here is a simple solution to the whole problem, QUIT BUYING THE GAME CONSOLES!
If people just quit buying them in protest of this cr@p the maufactures would get the message really damn quick - it would hit them in the bottom line - loss of sales - loss of $$$$.
People do nothing but whine and moan about not being able to "backup" their games, play imports, yada-yada-yada. Show the **IAA, the government, and business you want to be able to do this - it's called choice in competition. Show them things like the DMCA can backfire on them. If the corporations want to give money to the politicians to pass a$$inine laws like the DMCA show them what you think about it - show them how much money they will lose doing these kinds of things.
Simply QUIT buying the consoles, STOP buying the games! Sooner or later they HAVE to get the message...
But, people are too busying sitting on their a$$e$, shoving cheetos in their mouths with a game controler in hand b!tching instead of DOING something about it.
Boycotts DO work if you just stick to it. Don't think you HAVE to have the latest greatest console and game from whatever manufacturer you prefer. If you can't control yourself from buying it, your ADDICTED, just like a crack addict, and it shows they controll you instead of you showing control of yourself.
I quit buying consoles/games years ago, until this kind of cr@p stops - they won't get MY money!
"Suse hasn't shipped with KDE as the default environment for years"
What?
That's not quite accurate. I have installed and used SuSe 9, 10 and 10.2 and the install lets you -choose- whether you want KDE or Gnome as the default. Me I prefer KDE so I installed it with KDE as the default desktop. I just replaced Suse with Kubuntu for my new system I built, again becuase I just prefer KDE.
NOT! Who would want to switch to AT&T when they promptly turn over their phone records on you to the Government (several articles have discussed this on slashdot). Now with the iPhone they will turn over not only your phone records but your web surfing habbits, the music and videos you download and watch, the hotels and resteraunts you look for etc... Get an iPhone if you want but I won't go ANYWHERE NEAR AT&T.
"but Java just doesn't do GUI too well" True Java doesn't have a nice GUI. But if you build web applications and combine it with Ajax toolkits you can get some nice GUI's. We are building web applications using Java, JSP, Struts, Dojo Toolkit and Turbo Widgets and they look really nice. All wrapped in Apache Jetspeed portals/portlets running ontop of JBoss. You can get some really cool looking applications this way.
I'm one who was a VB3.0/VB4.0/VB5.0/VB6.0 developer (Visual Studio EE) who went to Java. I got sick of having to "port" my applications to the next release. At least with Java I get backwards compatability I just get ugly "deprected" warings in my compiles but that is it. The app just runs, be it Java 1.3, 1.4 or 1.5. I spent some time with Visual Studio.Net / VB.net and hated it. I figured my time would be better spent on a more cross platform language. I can make Java talk to about anything - although you could say the same for C/C++, and I can code it on any platform - can't say the same for VB. Heck I even have had it talking to AS/400's and Mainframes. Although.Net's Web Services are a nightmare to talk to. Try to get Apache Axis to talk to it, good luck! I have had Axis talk to just about every SOAP stack except M$'s. M$ tends to break standards the rest of the world uses. Why would I want to be tied to a broken development model like that?
Yeah baby! JBoss rocks! I've developed Java Web applications on Windows and Linux - OS doesn't matter with Java Development. (IMHO.Net/.Nut sucks big green donkey d!cks! I do not like it - Sam I am.) I just fire up Eclipse and JBoss and go. But I must say developing in Linux is far superior to Windows. There really is less overhead in the OS, I notice the performance improvement big time! Although I use OpenSuse - "I know bad, bad Linux user don't you know about Novell!" I just haven't found another distro I'm comfortable in yet, although my new PC will get Kubuntu 64 bit on it - I've told myself to give it at least 60 days to see if I can switch. I just wish Sun would open source Java 1.5....
Um, I'm typing this on a PC I built 8 years ago - It's a dual PIII 850 with 1 GIG ram. A little old yes, but not as old as my Amiga 2000 I have sitting on a desk behind this PC. I did just purchase hardware to build a newer PC (dual AMD Operteron 2.2ghz 24 gig ram). But, I don't but a new PC every 3 years. I build one that will last me 8 years and I'll spend less money than someone who has to have the latest and greatest piece of hardware. I just upgrade hard drives and cd/dvd burners that's it.
Microsoft schrill: "Hey, tell you what, we will supply you with 2 years worth of free booze, cars to drive, and a cover story for any women that end up in the river. In exchange you allow OOXML in."
Ted Kennedy: "Really, that's all I have to do. It's a deal! Where's my booze?"
What they -WON'T- tell you is those mexicans where really Al Qaeda operatives. SO technically they were protecting us from another 9-11. And besides they were illigal's, and everyone knows illigal aliens have NO rights, their not U.S. Citizens. Ask the aliens from Roswell, they didn't get any rights except for getting cut up and stuck in freezers. I don't seen the U.S. military in prison for that. So why should a couple border gaurds get it. So technically, they were protecting us from the "bad guys".
I think more programmers SHOULD read this article. I work in Java at work and there are individuals WITH CS degrees writing crap like this:
public String foo(String bar) {
int foo = 0;
String foobar = null;
while(foo
And yes this is VERY close to an ACTUAL method. Some of their stuff is so shotty it takes me days to plow through the application trying to figure out what the hell they were doing as I have to now go throug and clean up after their shitty mess and fix the poor performing badly written application - and no they are written by born in the U.S.A person(s)!
The article may be "primitive" in it's presentation and might be more geared towards new CS students, but there are A LOT of programmers that have been out of College for a while and still code like SHIT! I think they are the ones that -really- need to read this article over and over until it's drilled into their heads.
"Replacement Program PO Box 3100 Neenah, WI 54957-3100."
Hey I'm only 1hr 48 min from Neenah. I wonder if they have a physical address. I could just then physically walk in and get my replacement copy and not have to wait 6-8 weeks or more for my replacement to arrive.
M$ pounds their chest saying Linux is infringing. Then they go after enterprise customers asking them to pay for protection against litigation. Then they say they won't sue (????).
I think this is called "Racketeering" isn't it. Like the mob asking businesses to pay for protection money so "nothing happens to them". I think this just crossed M$ over line in to illigal actions here.
If you work for a company M$ has approached with one of these offers I -encourage you- to ask your company to call M$'s bluff - and tell them you consider this move an illigal one and that your company will be contacting the States Attorney Genral. If enough companies do this it might scare the living hell out of M$. But first and formost - actually contact the States Attorney General - don't threaten to do it - DO IT!
Heck maybe not just companies should do this but individuals as well. I think there are enough links to statements by M$ that the States Attonrney General's could have something to go on - right?
I'll admit I'm in this demographic. We own an NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube and gameboy. Although I'm looking at a used PS2 now that they are really cheap and you can buy the games used for half or less what they were brand new. There are a lot of great games on the Nintendo platform. Once the Wii gets down to about $150 or so I'll pick one up. Unfortunately some of the companies that put out really good games for the Nitendo platform have been bought up by M$ (Like Rareware - The Banjoo Kazooie games are great) so someone will be forced to write games for their PC game console. I'm sorry but Xcrock is nothing more than M$ trying to "embrace and extend" their monopoly. They won't be happy until they OWN the monopoly on EVERYTHING in your life. The PS3 is WAY to pricy for me to even consider. Sure I can't play the latest games on my PC - you have to upgrade your hardware every week to be able to. Game consoles (like Nitendo's) are the perfect fit. You don't have to constanly updgrade them to play great games. And you can buy the games up to 5 - 10 years after they came out. We are still buying old NES/SNES/N64 games from used game stores and garage sales. We can usualy get 4-5 games for the price of one of the brand new XCrock or PS3, or PC games. Am I a cheapskate - no - I'm just spending my money WISELY, I'm getting more for my money.
I'm sorry but this whole Imus thing got WAY out of hand. Yeah the guy may have said some stupid things but you know what he has the 1st Amendment right to do so. If you don't like what he is saying TURN THE FRIGGEN CHANNEL! You don't have to listen to it it's YOUR right. I don't like the racist things Al Sharpon and Jesse Jackson say about white people so I just don't listen to their frivoulus drivel their just as stuipd as Imus IMHO. I served 15 1/2 years in the U.S. Military and my family has since the Revolutionary war. We all fought and served to get and protect the rights we have. I don't agree with what Imus said but I'll defend his RIGHT to say it. This is not friggen Nazi Germany or Communist Russia! If you start telling people they can't say bitch or ho then it WILL go deeper to where now you can't say other things as well. Were would it stop. Instead you should try to reach people and -talk- to them and show them that maybe what they are saying isn't really nice, show them that calling a women a ho or bitch is not nice, that it is not a good thing to call a black person a N* or a hispanic person a W*B* etc... Don't burn them for it. But since these groups saw it fit to burn Imus at the steak then I think they HAD BETTER be going after the black rappers that are saying the EXACT same crap and worse. If they don't then EVERYONE will know they are using double standards and someone or A LOT of someones should call them all out on NATIONAL T.V. cable and other wise as well as radio. But as soon as you try to "filter" the rappers guess what they will yell FIRST AMENNDMENT! Sorry! If it wasn't good for Imus it isn't good for ANYBODY! Is that what we want????? Really? I'm sure the government would LOVE it. They took away your 4th Amendment rights with the Patriot Act and the Average American could give a shit, they are too stupid for their own good to know they LOST it. What else have we lost with our current president and government? Oh yea they are now TAPPING your phones ILLIGALLY! Where is the public outcry over that? Oh but we wil BITCH and MOAN about someone saying nappy ho! Give me frigen break!
Has anyone thought of the advantages in YOUR favor of NOT getting the Real ID. Think about it. If you won't be allowed -into Federal Buildings- without it. Then when you get say summoned to appear in court - guess what - sorry Mr. Judge the Law says I can't come in without a Real ID and I have a RIGHT to choose NOT to have one. Oh Mr. Congressman you want to force me to appear before congress - sorry I can't I don't have a Real ID I can't enter a Federal Building. It's your law not mine! Or you get called for jury duty - sorry Mr. Judge, I can't help you I'm not allowed into the building without a Real ID. Or you say get a DUI or arrested and are released on bond, how can the force you to court when you don't have a Real ID and are NOT allowed into a Federal Building. Think about it, if enough people refuse the Real ID - it could put a huge pinch in the Government and the court system. If enough people refuse the Real ID - yes they can't fly, but who does that hurt? It hurts the airlines. If business in the airline industry is hurt enough, maybe the airlines will start yelling and screaming, or they will just all go out of business.
DBPowerAmp is it! It works great for ripping my CD's to OGG. I'll just re-rip I think versus converting all the MP3's to OGG, I'll probably get better audio quality. Thanks for the info on this cool tool.
Ok, so for someone who would like to look into starting to convert all their MP3's to OGG could anyone suggest a -good- MP3 --> OGG converter? And a good program for converting their CD's to OGG? Also how about a good music player that plays OGG's (Zinf)?
we already have that for the first two. a social security card.
I hate to tell you this but the Social Security Card IS NOT a "nationald id card" it is against the law for them to require you to have one. Social Security (United States)
Well if all it takes $100USD I say we all chip in and get Bush and Cheney's Credit reports pulled and see if we get stopped or not. If they can pull ours then we have EVERY right to pull theirs!
I tried to do an install of Fedora Core 6 this weekend - 3 TIMES! I hate the install process it blows! It seems if you change it's "default install" setup for partioning it doesn't like partioning/formating to do the install. I also DO NOT like the software selection process - that blows as well! I had been a Red Hat user up to V6.0 when I upgraded to V6 the new Gnome stuff fucked up everything! So I switched to Suse and have been using it since V6.3, I was on V10.0 and when the Novell thing happend I decided to dump Suse and to try Fedora Core. NEVER AGAIN! It seems since V6.0 Red Hat Linux has become a major piece of CRAP! I'm not sure which distro to try next. I wish Novell had left Suse alone! It was a good distro until Novell stuck it's dick into it! They destroyed the "Good old German Engineering".
Anyone have a good suggestion for a different Distro?
I need one to be more of a development distro. I do a LOT of development with web development, Java technoligies. I use JBoss, Apache, etc..
When I was in Germany in the late 80's we went to Koln for an Amiga convention. Me and another guy bought a multi-eprom board, some eproms, Amiga OS V2.0.4, a multi-rom board and burned the Amiga OS onto Eprom (heck it is only 4 880K floppy disks). and then put the multi-boot rom board in an Amiga 2000 and when the Amiga was powered on the OS was up instantly! No waiting for the hard drive to boot up. It rocked! Windows could NEVER do that! I would LOVE to see a Linux distro that could do it, I'm sure it could since there are floppy based distros like Pocket Linux that come in around 1.4 meg. Of course the Amiga OS included a GUI....
I built a EJB3 set of services along with working with another group who built JSF/Seam pages (interface) and using EJB3 stateful session beans and we deployed it all on JBoss using JDK1.5.0_06. In fact we used the J2EE 1.5 - granted we had to "spoof" Eclipse/MyEclipse into using the J2EE 1.5 jars and capabilities. But JBoss worked just fine with it all. This was a company internal application but it worked just fine. We used JBoss 4.0.4 GA Patch 1. I love the JDK/J2EE 1.5 stuff. Wish my current company would move from 1.4.2 to the 1.5.

Thanks much for any help.
we already have that for the first two. a social security card.
I hate to tell you this but the Social Security Card IS NOT a "nationald id card"
it is against the law for them to require you to have one.
A good server grade distro would be nice.
Thanks!
