Yes part of the source is not open. BIG DEAL! At least Matrox is stepping up to the plate to support linux. This just ROCKS! I have a Matrox G400 Dual head and the release of this tool and the drivers shows good faith by Matrox to support their hardware under Linux. Some Open Source Purists might complain, but really how many people out there really care if they have the source foe these things. They just want their hardware to work and an easy way to configure it. That is one way you will get more windows users to linux. Ease of Use. BTW: anyone that has Matrox hardware and likes this move by Matrox should definately email them and thank them (I already did). It will reinforce them to want to continue to support Linux.
I have always bought from crucial. There great! Their prices are a little higher than what you might buy from other places. But then again I am buing 256meg sdram buffered with ECC for my home server. Crucial also ships 2nd for free!
I would just politely tell them to go F*** themselves. I got something similar from a company and told them this. That was 6 months ago and no response yet.

Here is a SIMPLE way to get their butts!
Simply download ONLY.mp3 files that you own the CD/Cassettes/records of. Only download the movies of VHS/Beta/DVD etc.. you own. Then when the MPAA/RIAA has your ISp shut you down you simple file a lawsuit against both your former ISP and the MPAA/RIAA for violation of your rights under "The Home Recording Act" and violation of your rights to "Fair Use". And sue the S*** out of them! It would be easy to prove in court since you could bring in the exibits of
1) you original cassettes,records, VHS/Beta/DVD's you own.
2) the downloaded version to show you only downloaded what you own.
Make the MPAA/RIAA prove you downloaded something you don't legalyl own!
As for "sharing" to others. Put all.mp3's and movies in.zip files with a text file that states that "you can only download and keep this file if you legally own the original (cassette,record,VHS,Beta/DVD). IF not you must immidiately delete this file."
Use the defense that you are ONLY providing a "Archival Backup Service". Which by the way is LEGAL! Even in the Software world. You are legally allowed to make at least ONE backup of what your purchased by copyright law.
Here is the simpilest solution. Pettion ALL motherboard manufactureres to NOT support the RAMBUS memory. If RAMBUS want to be bunch of dicks - then let them get a dick in the ass. If no one will support their memory the'll be out of business. Just have the other memory manufactureres get together and develop another standard and exclude RAMBUS from the picture. Yes, Norton AntiVirus 2001 will KILL your hd partition table leaving you a useless HD - and you have to reformat and reinstall. This happend to numours machines here at work. NAV -WAS- used to scan systems and our network for virii. one day it started poping up messges that the boot sector needed repairing and asked to repair it. Being this has beeen done to many times to count with scan disk "ok" was selected. Then NAV said to reboot. Guess what - BAM- no more hard drive. When using a boot floppy with fdisk on it it showed the drive but the partitions had been blown away. And with the way software companies cover their ass - you can't sue them. So... ALL norton software was banned by the company and the laywers are sending letters to Symantic.
After doing some research I found that there had been a problem with this in NAV since way back in October of last year!
I only hope they keep the English version. I still like SuSE the best of all the Distro's. Good old German engineering!!! I hate to say it but German programmers are far superior to American progamers. (this comming from an American programmer who has worked with German programmers).

They could use the CPRM to their advantage. You have to think like M$ would think. This new specification could be another "tool" for M$ to use.
The scary part about this is the CPRM could be used to thwart the installation of non-M$ OS's, as far as "multi-booting" goes.
The saving grace is that I know that some individual(s) will hack the specification and write a nice little utility to "break" the CPRM. It is only natural that this would happen. This CAN be a decisive and pivitol point for third parties. All the talk shows are talking about the 2002 elections already and how usually the party that holds the White House loses seats in congress. Well my proposal is NOW is the time for third parties to come out of the wooodwork. I as a new Libertarian (former Republican) feel that if third parties (specifically the Libertarian party:^) ) use this presidential court battle we could possibly get some candidates on capitol hill and bump republicans or democrats. I say take away the majority of either the Republicans or Democrats.
I don't know about you but I have had it with this two party system BS! It doesn't work any longer! We need third parties to shake things up! This would really make me question the ethics of a programmer comming from India. Especially a hiring manager should worry about this.
This type of thing is why I feel source should be open! With closed source you could steal anyones code you wanted and say it is yours. If I use a routine from someones code I at least have comments in the code as to who owns the code I borrowed - as long as the person states in their code that their code is freely usable.

M$ will see this as an opportunity! Think about it. It's perfect for M$ to use the same "content protection" area of the HD to copy protect windows or any of the microsoft products. They could use the CPRM to their advantage. You have to think like M$ would think. This new specification could be another "tool" for M$ to use.
The scary part about this is the CPRM could be used to thwart the installation of non-M$ OS's, as far as "multi-booting" goes.
The saving grace is that I know that some individual(s) will hack the specification and write a nice little utility to "break" the CPRM. It is only natural that this would happen. Enough people will be outraged that this new form of copy protection will be thwarted, albeit a hardware copy protection - but, hey so where dongles and on-disk protection.

The long term solution is for people to start mass putting out on the internet, sending letters etc.. recomendations to the artists and bands to start "doing it themselves" without the record labels. Tell them to set up their own wbe sites and sell the music in MP3 format - NON-Encrypted!
Yes, you will have folks that will distribute the Mp3's illigally - that they didn't pay for or did pay for. but like others have said "you can't stop piracy" PERIOD! You just have to deal with it. Some bands and artists are starting to "get it" and going to internet distribution already. Much of the countries outside the U.S. may not be as affected by all this as the U.S. is - yet.
Public opinion counts - heck just look at how the U.S. political system operates - they watch the polls! If enough public opinion shifts towards anti-RIAA, anti-MPAA - these groups will HAVE to rethink their positions - hopefully.... then again organized crime doesn't care about public opinion - they just enforce their will upon you.

I think it is high time that the people of the world start to get together and say in one voice " we have had it with how corporations are operating, and tired of how our governments are treating us!" We all want an ideal world, some would say it isn't possible - and it might not be. But if the founding fathers of the U.S. constitution could get quite a bit right - why not take what they did and learn from all the mistakes of the U.S. government, and all the other forms of government in the world and design a "better moustrap" - it could be done.

The truth is that ANY government is only concerned about how much tax money they can collect. In te US. e get taxed to death! Federal tax, social security tax, medicare tax, state tax, city tax, sales tax, gas tax, (And if you are lucky enough to work in the city of Denver they tax you another $5.00 just because you work in the city & county of Denver,CO), death tax, capitol gains tax, any I forgot?
A free software tax just seems like a logical extention! Especially since the big corporations basically have a lot of say in what laws our government passes. The big software houses will have heavy compitition from free software if they don't put a stop to it. So no matter who gets to be president (Gore or Bush) this country is is serious trouble! Democrats are NOTORIOUS for taxing the blood out of us! Republicans will tax us depending on what their big corporate backers tell them to.
For those who are U.S. citizens you should see by now from this current ellection that neither of the two major parties can be trusted. Both will screw us. I love the Amiga don't get me wrong, I still have an A2000 sitting in my office. But the Amiga's time is done. Quit trying to resurect it. Just release the OS and such openly. Let the emulator folks write a good emulator and let people use that. I just think it is time to let the Amiga pass on into its place in history just like the old Commodore VIC20,C64, Atari 400,800 etc.. Let it live on in the Emulator world.
