I support at least one musician in this manner. He gives out some of his stuff as MP3's for free download at MP3.com and I buy his CD's direct from him! NO RIAA inbetween! He gets ALL the money.

Check out Bjorn Lynne Here and his other pseudonim Divinorum. Some may know him as Dr. Awsome!

Also Show the RIAA that downloading MP3's is a good "Try before you buy" program. If you download and like the music, please buy the artists CD. This way part of the RIAA's reasoning that this is all about theft starts to dry up.

Then, at a future date in time when a whole slew of those visa's expire there will have to be a mass exodus of foreign workers. (But, of course the corporations will bitch and whine and get them extended.) Also, the more foreign workers brought in the less Americans will be needed by big corporations to do the work.

This country needs to start being less reliant on other countries for goods and services and start doing things ourselves. I know this is a strange idea, but we did do this at one point in time in our history. Look at this country WWII and prior. I know someone will mention the Chinese, Irish etc.. that worked on the railroads, and the black slaves that were brought into this country to do the slave labor on the plantations. But, think about this, this is EXACTLY the same thing that is happening with H1-B's! Money grubbing entreprneurs(corporations) using cheap labor. If these companies would be fair with the labor in the U.S. (pay fair wages, fair benifits etc..) and stop relying on cheap foreign labor; more Americans would do an honest days work for an honest days pay. There were 8 EPROM slots in the board so we had the Whole OS and some small, heavily used programs burned into the EPROMMS. It was awsome!

I am willing to pay $20 for a cd from him because 1) he is incurring all the costs of production, copying and distribution of his CD's 2) he gets EVERY dime! Nothing goes to the RIAA! He even gives out free samples of his music in MP3 format. As well as having contests and gives out copies of his CD's to winners. How many artists aligned with the RIAA give out their CD's on a weekly basis to their fans? I would encourage everyone to seek out artists like this and support them (if you like their music). This is why when NT came out it was touted as "better than Unix". Because M$ couldn't release a Unix flavor. This is why They haven't released their own flavor of M$ LInux. Legally until SCO goes under they CAN'T.
Now here is the thought. What if M$ bought up SCO? Basically buying back Xenix plus some. At that point they contract with SCo is null and void. They (M$) would be free to release a Unix flavor. Now just think about the ramifications of this.
We all know that the bulk of the people that do as BG and the Redmond campus say is because they are Lemmings and/or sheep. Thus to severly damage the growing momentum of Linux they release a M$ Linux that is a total piece of cr*p. Then they could ocme out and in the press say "see how bad Linux is" "we tried to put out a version, but Linux is just not viable." Or somthing to this effect.
How many know that M$ just dumped some money into VMWare and signed in with an OEM agreement with them. This could also throw a wrench into Linux. M$ say starts distributing VMWare with Windows and touting if you want to run Linux you can do it through Windows now.
I think you all can think of the other endless possibilities M$ could do.

Does anybody have any statistics on how many people have gone to jail as a result of copyright offenses? I'd hazard a guess that it is not many. I imagine the law has basically only gone after those making a hefty profit from what they did. Why should how they are breaking copyright law make a difference?

From knowing a little about the Software Piracy issue, I can say that %99.99999 of the time they never prosocute the "home use" pirate. BUT if you start MASS distributing software they raise an eye to you. And if you start selling the software you have pirated THEN they will come after you.

In the case of MP3's I really don't see any law enforcement agency coming after the "home use" pirate. napstar is nothing more than an "open" form of the old Pirate BBS's. Not very many really got taken down. They slowly faded away. The same will happen with Napstar. It to will fade away into something else. Some new technology will replace Napstar. If the RIAA would get a clue they would see that history repeats itself.
But with the mass amount of big corporations trying to take the Internet for themselves anyway they can, what is happening to Napstar doesn't surprise me. If the RIAA can get rid of the Napstar and MP3.com sites. They(RIAA) could open up something similar of their own and have NO compition. It's all about market share. Right now the RIAA has no, zero, zilch, nada, none market share of the MP3 market. I think they realize that MP3's are the next medium for music distribution, and they want ALL the market share, to hold onto their monopoly of the music distribution business. This is why fighting this wave of "stop MP3's!" is so important.
Just my comments on this whole thing.

Actually Linux doesn't exactly run on the AS/400, but it will run on the IPCS HINT HINT .

I have talked with many people about Linux on the AS/400 and the only reason you would want Linux on the AS/400 is to put it on the IPCS or integrated netfinity card. Linux won't, I repeat won't be able to replace the capabilites of OS/400 yet .

In the buiness world they want a server that is stable, secure, easy to administer etc...

    Comparisons:

    Linux:
    Stable
mostly secure - depends on sysadmin
not so easy to administer or use
    cost - cheap!

    OS/400 - AS/400:
    very stable
very secure: - again a bad sysadmin can somewhat hurt this. but set at Security level 50 (changing ONE system value) and take the simple steps in the "tips and tricks for securing the AS/400" and you have a C2 rated machine.
    Easy to use and administer
    cost - not so cheap

having used both and a host of other OS's I still like the AS/400 for it's overall capabilites.

If I had my choice I would use the AS/400 as the a back office server and use Linux for firewall, proxy server etc.. maybe for a mail/news server. But I don't think that Linux is ready as a replacement for AS/400's OS/400. Especially in the business world.

Just my .03 worth -- inflation you know!
