I'm, currently planning to replace my old iMac with a new, cheap PC. It has sounded really scary, until now...! If I can run iTunes on it that would be like a guiding light in the Windows darkness!
Are these guys serious? 4 apps. That's it? * Microsoft Word? Give me a break! Sure, you don't have many alternatives in OSX, but this huge application still suck on OSX. Microsoft hasn't gotten it right, and they probably never will. * Premiere is AFAIK a PC app nowdays. You don't buy a dual PowerMac G5 and run Premiere?!?! Final Cut Pro is the only option, and it is extremely fast on Apple's high end hardware! * Photoshop seems to be an application that's very well optimised for all kinds of SIMD implementations, and it's an ok benchmark. * Quake 3... sure, why not include it.
Wouldn't it be possible to run Premiere vs FCP? They must have very similar featuresets, so it shouldn't be a problem to come up with a benchmark that you could run on both?
If you have an old graphics card that's not really optimized for 32-bit color (like any Rage128, and my Rage Pro Turbo:-) MacOS X could become exactly twice as fast/snappy by switching to 16 bit color. Tried that?
On thought that I had was that doesn't SuSE have a dist for IBM 64 bit zSeries too? They should run Power4, and Power4 binaries should be compatible with the PowerPC 970 if I understand correctly. Maybe he confused AMD and IBM... both ends with an M right?
Anyway, my first thought when I read the most recent messages in the thread was, vapor...
It's kindof like people suggesting that Apple should move everything to x86!
Just a stupid idea! "Yeah, I know, they should rewrite everything from scratch!!"
There are already 3 variants of Gecko avaliable for MacOS X (or maybe more?), one embedded in Cocoa (Chimera) and two in Carbon (Mozilla and Netscape).
So why should apple make a 4:th??
There (were) 0 variants of KHTML avaliable for MacOS X.
Now there is one!
More choises for Mac users!
No unnecessary duplication of work, that another Cocoa frontend to Gecko for MacOS X would have been!
No, the difference here is that with Microsoft products you don't see the development process.
This is version 0.4 remember? Look at that number... do the developers think it's finnished? Even half-finnished?
Install a nice linux desktop with Evolution/KMail + any browser and everything will be at least as integrated as on Windows.

You should have waited 2 seconds...
Hey, I'm trying to come up with an explanatin here... it's close, ok?

Really, I haven't been able to figure out what you americans mean with those two letters! I know how it looks but...
Yes, the problem is that they only have 3.0.7 as binary.
If you want 3.1 you have to compile from source, and you really should get KDE 3.1!
