Oh my god. You guys must live in a hollowed out tree. The H. Potter books are written for *12 year olds*. On the other hand, I still read one of Heinlien's juveniles now and then. But, books like Podkayne of Mars, or The Star Beast. Those books where REAL Sci-Fi, not fantasy crap.
Contains (somehow, not really sure how) the UNIX/Sadmind virus. At least our enterprise anti-virus software, Sophos Sweep detects that when I open the page. You guys might want to check out the links you supply with stories a little better. BTW, I still get the virus warning after the Veridian guys deleted the directory. Check it out at www.veridian.com/upload/ .
I think that's one of the best ideas I've heard lately. How hard would it be to form such a corp? I'm willing to participate, at least from a managerial point of view. This way I could contribute to the cause, since I'm not a coder per se.
I guess one way to start is to make a meeting place. I've got a forum app running on my personal website, http://www.jwenger.org. I'll add a section called PublicOS. If anyone is interested, we could discuss this further there.
Dammnit! I just switched from DSL a few months ago! Those assholes at @link network went tits up, remember? GRRRRRRRRRRR Now I get to spend ANOTHER $500 setup for DSL? wonderful.
Wow, a raised floor computer room with outside windows! Whodathunk. I've never seen one. Has anyone else seen a computer room with outside windows? All of the one's I've been stuck in are usually in basements.
There's a 50ish lady that works at Cray, named Dorothy. I met her at this years Rockfest, in Cadott, WI., which is about 20mi north of Chippewa Falls. She was wearing a Cray tshirt, which of course caught my eye right away. I ended up making friends with her and getting a phone number and contect person for Cray to get my very own Cray tshirt. We talked about how SGI is sucking the life out of everything around it and I found out Cray is back out on it's own. So, it appears that Cray is going to survive SGI after all, and will still be building those insanely fast machines they're known for.
Which SSH implementation did you go for? I wouldn't mind trying it myself, since the damn State^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H my employer has standardized on M$ shit. Oh well, it pays the bills.
BTW, I'm up to 130 CR2 hits on my name/HTTP server too. Just to stay on topic, donchaknow.
I would actually buy a Sony PC using a BeOS based SonyOS (or whatever it would be called). I used BeOS 4.5 and 5, actually paying for both OS's and like them very much. It really sucks that there's not enough software for the OS. The biggest usage killer for me was no decent games. I totally agree that Sony has the clout and the cash to put a ding in M$'s armor, though. Go for it Sony!
I've probably spent over $1000 on various FreeBSD and Linux distro CD's and other various things like shirts, hats, towels (huh?), stuffed animals and such. All to help pay the bills for the great folk that are writing this stuff. I sure as hell can't write it, so I figure I'll throw a few bucks around to help. I'm pretty sure that the people hacking this stuff i.really/i appreciate it. How 'bout more of you join me?
bmajik said, "XP is monumental in that it brings SMP, JFS, firewalling, NAT, etc etc".
Check your own stupid meter, bmajik. XP is doing NOTHING innovative. NT has had SMP support forever, BeOS, AIX, IRIX, HP-UX and others all have had JFS since you were drooling baby puke, and firewalling and NAT are common on *nix boxen. How exactly is all of this innovation? By simply shoving it into the same box as the OS? Microsoft has basically never created anything new, at least not anything I'm aware of.
I've been a pretty loyal Adobe product user for years now. Photoshop and Illustrator are two of the main apps I use all the time. These tactics really make me want to puke. Does anybody know how much Killustrator costs to buy? Does "ZERO" come to mind? How the hell is this software (which is pretty decent, BTW) hurting Adobe, in any way, shape or form? Is there a version of Adobe Illustrator that runs on Linux? One of the main reasons I'm still running that M$ shit is because of this. Yes, I know I could run out and buy a Mac w/ OS X on it. Do you have an extra $3500 laying around?
I hereby declare a complete boycott of all Adobe products. Looks like I'll be getting more familiar with The Gimp after all.
Fuck You, Adobe. You where probably put up to this by that fag, Ballmer. Rot in hell.
"LEBANON, Tenn. -- A 61-year-old man was shot to death by police while his wife was handcuffed in another room during a drug raid on the wrong house."
This is simply sick. Think about it. You're sitting at home, reading./, and suddenly your front door breaks in! First reaction? Defend yourself. I am appalled by this story.

That's "threatens", not thretense. It's took me almost 20 seconds to figure out what you where talking about there. I'm not picking on you directly, I'm simply getting tired of people that attempt to contribute to the dialog (mutlilog?) and can't even come close to something like spelling correctly. Good spelling is a mark of intellectual involvement in a topic.
On the other hand, I do agree that a C# implementation on FreeBSD would probably influence Sun a fair ways towards creating a native Java SDK and byte-code compiler.
Frankly, it sounds like the guy was trying all along to tell you the project was hosed from the beginning. I've worked on numerous projects that relied on proprietary software (IIS, NT) to work. I know for a fact I could have created the same end result, faster and more robust, with open source software than the other 15 or so developers I worked with combined. Look at your methodology. What is going to make you more money? Something that you have to pay for up front or something you don't have to pay for at all? This is one of my pet peeves, managers that think the end deliverable can only be based on MS (or other...) products and the client will only buy such. BULLSHIT! If you support your product, who cares what it's based on? Only the VP's and higher, who Ms markets to, knowing full well that us techies think it's crap (most of us anyway). Please look closer at open source software and listen to your geeks, we know what we're talking about.
Pretty soon we'll have some sort of rebel ICANN challenging the original
Frankly, I look forward to something like that. To date, ICANN has been nothing more than a closed organization, making decisions that directly effect all internet users, without listening to the community. I say disband the ICANN and form a new committee, based on an IRC like forum. Consensus could be pretty easliy found in such a manner and the overall good of the community would occur.
We (I grew up and still live here in Wisconsin and consider the Packers to be God's own team) might have the smallest stadium, and middlin' revenue, but the Pack is still one of the most successful teams ever. You certainly can't say that about a team located just a little bit west of us...
As for the Mandrake stock thing, hell yes! I _really_ like the distro and want to see them continue. I believe that Mandrake will be the distro to conquer the desktop. I'm running 8.0 on one of my workstations and my laptop right now. Gotta love it!
So, what you're really getting at here, Trumpet, is that we gotta make everything about OSS better and more easily accessible to newbies. Here's a few places you can start, even though you don't code:
It seems to me that nobody really knonws that Triumph is back, with some very kickass bikes. I own a 2000 Speed Triple. No, I can't go 200mph. So what? Breaking 160mph on an un-faired bike is one hell of a lotta fun. The 2001 600 and the Daytona are tops in their respective classes. The major magazines just don't recognize this, I suspect because they're owned by the Big 3.
