I'll start out by saying I love virtual reality, at least on the Quake3 level of it. More advanced stuff on the "Matrix" level I suppose would be eventually possible. None of which is the point of space travel/research. The whole point is to get our asses off of this confining planet and grow to our full potential. Space is the only place we can grow, basically infinitely. The human races only real chance for long term survival is by moving off of the planet and into space. Not just colonizing Mars or something, although that's a good start, but everywhere we can.
Really, I doubt that the airlines would go out of business. The bottom line is if there's a profitable route to fly, someone will fly it. It doesn't matter how much up front is needed, long term profits are always there.
Bullshit. Jet fuel is simply slightly better refined kerosene, basically diesel. High flash point, relatively cool burning. It's about like charcoal lighter fluid, doesn't go poof!
Why do I know? I'm a general aviation pilot. As such, I'm pretty close to jets frequently, and I've asked the fueler monkeys.
On to the topic. I'm not sure why hydrogen isn't used for jets, other than the fact that it's a bitch to store and transport. I'd think it'd be an ideal fuel for just about everything, since in it's pure form the only burn by-product is water.
BTW, the Hindenberg got smoked mainly because of the aluminum-oxide paint on it's exterior surfaces. Think solid fuel rocket.
I'm currently running around 250 virtual domains on each of my servers. I prefer FreeBSD, but I do run Apache. These machines, BTW, are all (well all 3...) no greater than pentium 166 w/ 128mb ram. I do have a pentium pro 200 that I run clients stuff on that need PHP and MySQL. Try that with IIS, especially at this hardware level.
When I worked in the oil fields in the early 80's (don't ask, it sucked hugely) logging petroleum deposits, I found out we have enough natural gas under the US to last something like a million years at current levels of consumption. Don't let the petro companies fool ya. Gasoline and other stuff is going away in the relatively near future, but nat gas is here in massive quantities.
It's time to take up the discussion from a couple of days ago. Slashdot as a politcal force. One of the simpler things we could do is form a boycott. Boycott UMG at first and then all of the other music monopolists. I for one usually buy $100+ worth of music a month. I hereby declare that I will immediately stop buying music from the UMG until they make the anti-copy noise go away. Who's in?
Sounds like you have the W32/Nimda-A virus. Follow the link for a good update.
BTW, My nameserver/webserver is getting smoked with this 208.x.x (for lack of a better name) worm. I work for the state DNR and it's aproaching a DDOS style attack for us.
How the fuck is this off topic? We're talking about skins for this game. I swear there's people out there that Taco and the boys should remove from the moderator pool. When I moderate, I at least try to see things from the other persons point of view.
I personally would love to be blowing the shit outta something skinned with Osama Bin Ladens evil visage.
rm -Rf/bin/laden or cat/bin/laden >/dev/null either way, I really don't care.

"The government is not there to hold your hand. People should take back personal responsibility and stop abdicating it to the government in the name of convenience."
This seems to be the biggest problem our country faces today, not the threat of terrorists, which is insanely bad, but a seeming lack of personal responsibility. I suspect this is why our courts are so jammed with civil suits. I therefore claim publicly that I am 100% responsible for all of my actions, and I wish other human beings would do the same.
The Taleban website, appears to be continually hacked. Every time they fix their site, within minutes it's defaced again. WAY TO GO!!!!!! I'll make a mirror of the hack for prosperity. I don't feel so completely helpless anymore! There has to be more that we as a community of geeks can do, other than giving blood (VERY IMPORTANT!), or donating cash. I'm sure that the lowlife communicated electroniclly, maybe have secure or hidden websites. Think about a cell based organization, picking up and dropping off information anonymously via FTP. I'm almost positive that info is out there. LET'S FIND IT!

I'd say it's a form of punishment to keep the embargo of Iraq going. They should have cooperated early to avoid it. Thus, it's the Iraqy gov that is killing their own children.
Thank you, sir. You took the words out of my mouth.
Fuck terrorism. Kill 'em all. I can't even think of an epitaph that describes my feelings towards these things.

Frankly, who cares? Terrorists certainly don't. We don't need a trial, a hearing, or anything like that. We're the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. We shouldn't be fucked with like this. I agree with MxTxL, we need to attack _now_, not after some silly senate hearing or whatever. All countries that harbor these worthless excuses for people should be bombed. ENOUGH. Retaliate now.
The only way that the HP books getting a Hugo are doing SF any favors is the publicity it will draw. I realize I sounded a little (ok, a lot...) sarcastic in my last post. I truly love SF. I pretty much _don't_ like fantasy. Not even TLOTR trilogy. Well, maybe the "The Hobbit", at least I finished it. Anyway, AC, you've picked some great books to pass on to your kid. "The Stainless Steel Rat" series is the one I go back to time and time agian. Right along with "Dune".
I do disagree with the decision that the con goers made, acually voting for the book they did. Maybe there should be two Hugo's, one for SF and one for fantasy.

That would be ES-40's. I think. It's been centuries since school. Back when we had to load the coal ourselves in to the furnaces.
I'm pretty sure it was 1980's levels. We're sure to vastly increase our reliance on natural gas soon.

RIH stands for ROT IN HELL. I simply can't say anymore. Fcsking shit eating baby fuckers. Where's my shotgun?
I'm curious, does anyone know how much a US President costs these days? Obviously, M$ can afford it, whatever it is.
I'm simply appalled that M$ will get what appears to be a slap on the wrist and sent home.

zero. zip. nada. none. Come on, do people acutlly use their social security number as a username? Who the hell thought of that?
