It's budgetary. Congress said, "NASA, you get X dollars for manned launch programs." The Shuttle program takes Y dollars. Orion/Constellation takes Z dollars. The issue is that X > Y + Z. Therefore you have to cut shuttle operations, or delay/cut Orion, or do both.
Looked at in isolation (which is all we had in '77 and '78), Episode IV (back then, simply known as "Star Wars") fits nicely into the Arthurian legend as well.
Personally, I'd like to see an SCA (state constitutional amendment) to the effect that all elected state officials, and their direct staff forfeit their salary for each day that the state is without a budget.
Yeah, the elected Assembly and Senate members tend to be rich, but when their staffers go unpaid, they'll get holy hell.
Every damn record label out there seems to think that because they've made money in the exact same way for many years, this state of affairs must continue - be it by making anything which threatens it illegal or by taxing it so they get a cut of the money.
Time for the Obligatory Heinlein quote:
There has grown up in the minds of certain groups in this country the notion that because a man or a corporation has made a profit out of the public for a number of years , the government and the courts are charged with the duty of guaranteeing such profit in the future, even in the face of changing circumstances and contrary public interest. This strange doctrine is not supported by statute nor common law. Neither individuals nor corporations have any right to come into court and ask that the clock of history be stopped, or turned back, for their private benefit.

I wonder if we subtracted a great percentage of things like weather forecasting, satellite communications, planetary geology, solar technology, aerospace and commercial aviation advancements, awesome pictures of our Universe and other worlds, a growth in understanding of the Universe.... if people would start to care.
Unfortunately your answers are most likely in order:

I don't live in the sticks. I live in Los Angeles. Specifically the San Fernando Valley.
I have no fiber. DSL is limited to 768K because I'm 18000 feet from the CO. Time Warner is the only other option.

I gave up on contacts about 20 years ago. I'm prone to corneal erosions, and any time I got dust in my eye, it hurt like hell --- sharp stabbing pain.
About a year ago I did PRK (wasn't a good candidate for LASIK, alas). Love it.
The problem is that the Russians wanted all communications by email....
By a governmental (or quasi-governmental) agency, who is therefore bound by the First Amendment.
1992 called. They want their George H.W. Bush debate footage back.
I'm still trying to figure out why AMEX killed it's "Private Payments" (one-time temporary numbers).
Or do mathematics.
Remember, math and alcohol don't mix. Please don't drink and derive.
Ewwwwwwwwww
I can see someone creating that distro now, just for the hell of it.
Isn't the proton a hadron?
Isn't string theory dying?
No, it's just getting stained.

It's been done.
Yeah, they advertise "OWN IT TODAY", but the xxAA insists that we are only buying a license to the content on the physical media.
Actually, this would probably make an interesting court case.
Because System 7.5.3 is for a Mac, not an Apple ][?

We didn't. This is Phoenix. It's stationary.
On the other hand, Spirit and Opportunity *are* running around on Mars.
Only for the Spanish Inquisition!

yes, yes, no, no, maybe, no, no.
Is why my next car will not be a Ford.
We must nuke our imagination!
