How about, instead of yahoo blocking outside clients like trillian and gaim, they work with them to incorporate the ads?
Many people use outside clients so they can connect to all of these services with one program. I'd wager many people are trained now to ignore the ads they see on the internet anyway. Or have ad blocking software that blocks the ads regardless of what client is used:)
In the 20 or so years of copy protection schemes, none have worked. Music, software, and movies are easy to copy due to their digital nature. Whenever this latest code comes in use, it will be hacked.
This is a perfect example of why people should turn Windows autoupdate off. EULA's you can click through, but pay attention to updates!!!!
actually, I bought the system used. it had win2k on it at the time (someone upgraded it to 192 meg ram). Tried apm -S and no luck. It suspends for a split second, then resumes w/ no user intervention.
To all the people that wonder what use this is (because linux never needs rebooting I guess), consider this. I had a toshiba laptop w/ linux on it. I don't know why hibernation doesn't work (it does on my IBM thinkpad w/ no problems) but it just doesn't. Therefore, this 466 celeron has to boot up every time I use my laptop.
This slow boot time has caused me to put WinXP back on it, because it takes a 466 FOREVER to boot vs wake up from hibernation. This is also a shameless plea for any advice on how to configure hibernation on a Toshiba 2615DVD/6.0 running mandrake 9.1:)
The important thing to learn from this is that when it comes down to what the average user wants to do with a computer, the new ultra fast Xtreme P4 is not necessary. Surfing the web, email, and word processing can be done with a sub $100 computer system given the correct software.
This also brings up the sheer amount of unneccessary bloat in alot of software today.
Hey, another reason NOT to upgrade to the new version!
I use word processors to write school papers. When it comes down to it, writing a school paper requires one important feature, spell check. That was available on the C64. I'll bet most people are like me in that they NEVER need to upgrade (no, I don't have the trusty C64 anymore, but I haven't upgraded office since 97).
You really have to hand it to the Microsoft marketing dept for making everyone believe they need to upgrade every year.
I'd probably never get to moderate again if I had mod points right now, because I think that's funny right now because I'm so intoxicated, but I'm sure that everyone else sees it as sooo offtopic.
Virginia Beach, Va., installed the software on closed-circuit cameras along the city's boardwalk last summer. While it has never produced a hit or an arrest, police spokesman Sgt. Max Hayden said it performed well in controlled tests and may be a deterrent to criminals. Signs along the boardwalk inform visitors of its use.
This reminds me of a DUI checkpoint I saw a couple of months ago. They had not one, but TWO signs 6 and 4 blocks, respectively, that said, "DUI checkpoint ahead". There were plenty of opportunities to turn down another street and avoid it altogether.
Does it really take that much intelligence for a criminal to avoid an area where he/she might get caught? While one might be so drunk as to not be able to read the signs, I think law inforcement in these circumstances is being as stupid as these criminals. Maybe it's that think like your enemy strategy.
In reply to your first three complaints, I didn't install WMP9, My XP copy is legit this is what I heard about SP1, and it shouldn't be a driver issue since my driver was "certified" by MS.
I'm going to group your last three points together, since they all have the common theme of "just install the patch". I did install the patch, AFTER doing my homework. You see, I don't go about life like a good little sheep doing things because a large corporation or a government tells me to. I like to learn about the subject and make my own decisions. If I wanted applications installed on my machine without my permission doing god only knows what, then I would leave my box online completely unprotected 24/7. Instead, I like to run a firewall, antivirus, and ad-aware to try to keep control of MY machine against known and unknown threats. This is true regardless of what OS I run.
Hopefully now you understand, but I doubt it. Try to THINK about what you read before flaming it. You might learn a thing or 2.
I agree that everyone should at least check out windowsupdate.com every once in awhile, but I am always hesitant to update my windows box. Windows Media Player 9??? Don't need it, don't want DRM. What about SP1 deactivating xp installs with pirate serial numbers? I've had DirectX updates that actually crashed previously working games (not lately though, gotta say that's getting better).
I like to wait to update my box for about a week or so to see if there is any outcry about some nasty thing Microsoft slips into the update. I'll bet I am not alone. As far as Blaster is concerned, I rely on independant firewall and antivirus applications to deal with these threats. IMHO it works better than relying on MS to secure their OS.
Consider yourself lucky:) I used to live across from (and I had to look this up to spell it) Le Bon Temps. I think that was the individual building. It's a bit better in the CBD, which is strange considering how much worse the flooding is in this part of town.
But my main point was power outages are normal occurances. WAAAY too much media attention assosiated with this.
I like the last bit in that title line, "Is there a story?". A friend of mine from Bangladesh recently moved back there. I was chatting with him on ICQ when I noticed every 2-3 minutes he'd go offline and come back. He told me that the power kept going out. It is a regular occurance, and the external modem he was using to connect to the net wasn't on the backup power system.
Here in New Orleans, we lose power about once a week for 10-20 minutes (more frequent if it rains, also depends on where in the city you are). Sometimes, power is out for a few hours. It's just a way of life.
I realize that it's impressive that such a wide area recieved a blackout, but really, is this such a big deal? Everything should be fixed soon. People just need to relax. Maybe GO OUTSIDE!!!:)
the disappearance of the Arctic ice cap would benefit maritime transport as it would create a new northern shipping route along Russia's northern coast that could save some 10 days in journey time between Europe and Japan.
I guess every dark cloud really does have a silver lining. And to think I was worried. Don't I feel foolish
In the past year in my household the following parts were fried due to inadequate power/protection
2 motherboards
1 CPU
2 hard drives
5(!) network cards
2 CD-Rom drives
these were out of three computers. One of these computers has a top of the line PS in it, as well as being hooked up to a UPS. That particular computer had 1 network card blow (some kinda surge hit our cable modem, took out the modem, router, and 2 network cards).
These experiences have taught me that power supplies do indeed matter. Surge strips seem to do nothing, but the UPS is a godsend.
As someone pointed out above, you can already be tracked by your cell phone. A friend of mine is a US Federal Marshall. Someone has a warrent out for their arrest, him and his friends go find them. He told me that they tracked someone to an isolated spot in Mississippi from the guys cell phone. Costs the police dept. like $100 or something like that, but they can find you if you use ANY kind of cell phone.
Another thought came to mind though. I recently lost my cell phone. A positive effect of GPS cell phones might be for me to be able to check the phones position online, plug in some coordinates into mapquest, and go find my phone. Of course, this could also turn into a selling point for our Orwellian future.
Uninterruptible power supply, not United Parcel Service. Can you get away with having a cheap power supply if you have a UPS?
I learned the importance of having a solid power supply when I moved to the unstable New Orleans power grid (damned third world around here). I fried 2 cheap ps's. My roommate went through 2 motherboards, and we've gone through 3 routers and 5 network cards. All of this in a year time frame. I finally got wise and bought antek for like $80 and a UPS for maybe $150 and I've been stable ever since (and I can continue playing GTA when a fuse blows. That's right, a fuse) But I have no way of knowing if my ps is that much better or if the UPS is what did the trick.
Also, any ideas on how to shield a cat-5 so a spike in electricity doesn't fry my network card and possibly everything else? I might go wireless on my desktop, but wireless is soooo slow compared to cat5:)
But does it run .....
Nevermind.

New Moon System Around Uranus
I saw that headline on slashdot and immediately thought to myself, "this is definately one of those times to read the article and NOT the comments".
It's all a ploy by Microsoft in their new "kill the penguin" buisness strategy.

I read the title of this book as the third installment on how to steal computers.
But that's just me.
I wonder how much money is wasted worldwide on these pointless lawsuits. Couldn't this time and effort be put forth towards something useful?
Are they Metric or Imperial elephants?
Definately Imperial elephants. Since we're talking about clouds, they have to be storm trooper elephants.

It's ideal for a grad student with lots of free time.
Never been to grad school, huh?

I was waiting to reuse this link I found on here the other day. What you need is one of these.

I believe this is what you are looking for. I thought about doing it, but $700 is a bit much for a computer case, no matter how cool it is.
