I'm sorry, but that just doesn't fly with me. I built my system from scratch and my machine cost at least $85 buck less because I DIDN'T install/buy Windows XP Home on it and instead installed Linux.
So where are the savings if I spent 85 bucks more? I don't get it.
This is bottom line here people...not "well, in the long run blah blah blah" kind of thing. I spent less and that's it. My whole system cost me less than $500.
I'm running Linux with the latest nvidia-kernel with a Geforce 4ti. Since this is by nvidia, could I just swap out my cards for the 6600 and keep going on my merry way? Or should I wait for new drivers to come out?
yes, expect Apple to fall over "any day now". They've been dying for a while now...for 20 years actually.
Also, PS on Windows is a kludge I wouldn't wish on my worse enemy...but I guess people that use it on Windows just don't know any better. If you came from the Mac world to Windows you would probably (notice I said probably...everyone is different) hate trying to use PS on Windows. On the other hand if you started using PS on Windows, then going to the Mac would make it seem like it's worse.
sorry to differ with you, but I encode CD's on my Linux machine and then transfer them over to my Wife's for her to play on iTunes because it's so much better. This is for mp3's mind you. Apple's AAC is a different story, yet less flexable IMHO.
And I don't understand what you mean that lame and ogg don't do classical. Can you point me to websites that show this? Or is this just opinion.
As I said before, the concept of a fluid distro are lost on some people.
I installed Gentoo about a year ago and have never downloaded a new "version" as I keep up with my emerge on a regular basis.
The only thing I can figure is that they are installing on fresh systems or want a live CD. Then it would make sense. But from the people I've talked to, they don't realize they already have the latest version if they "emerge sync && emerge -uDv world"
Why do you need new CDs? Are you installing on multiple computers?
I installed Gentoo about a year ago and since then I've yet to download another CD image...hell, I can't even find my original install CD. Yet I'm totally up to date with the distro. I emerge sync every other day and let it compile at night.
The concept of a fluid distro is lost on some people I think. You do NOT need to download or buy the new CD's every time a new version comes out unless you are installing new machines and don't want to use the net to install.
You know, if you already have Gentoo loaded and you keep up to date with emerge you have the new version already...unless you're looking for a live CD or need to load it on new machines.
Windows kicks Linux's ass in terms of usability and GUI refinements.
Sorry, I don't agree. To me the Windows GUI of XP is a cludge. Call me crazy but I personally find that the Gnome (Metacity) MUCH better suited to me. Also, I think it's idiotic to have a web browser built into the OS. I mean, who the hell needs a web browser in your file browser? Is that the "usability" he's writing about?
Of course, everyone is different. But I find Linux much easier to get around and work in than Windows. Your taste may vary.
They're all usefull...but as with anything, some people like one over the other.
I prefer Gnome over the others...but that doesn't mean that none of them are un-usefull, they're all usefull and they all work and what I like in a UI isn't what everyone else likes.
"Upper class - Makes all of the money, does none of the work, pays none of the taxes.
Middle class - Does all of the work, pays all of the taxes.
Lower class - Well, we just keep them around to scare the shit out of the middle class."
It was ment to be funny and in no way ment to comment on what's right or whats wrong or whats political or not. I know you didn't know the reference and your indignation shows it. But come on, lighten up a little and we'll try to be a little more serious. Meet half way...

Geez, get over it, already.
Feel free to mod me down then. I didn't post it for mod points and I didn't have an axe to grind. Just pointing out a few things and it certainly was on topic as it delt with music preferences.
But once again they have to cater to the lowest common denominator. There are always those people out there that have the computer they bought 15 years ago and want it to last a lifetime and then go:
"back in my day we could program everything in 640k of RAM, that's all you need and we were THANKFULL to get it! And we loved it! We didn't need more than 4 colors on our CGA displays. Why doesn't Doom 3 work on that? Guess they don't know how to program! Oh...have to go, Matlock is on..."

You comment on ANY type of music saying that you're not into it or don't understand it and you're labled "closed minded" and have no understanding at all on music.
What is it with people. Can't anyone have likes and dis-likes in music? If someone says they don't like hip-hop, then people jump down their throats calling them small-minded, yet would a hip-hop fan sit down and listen to an album of Hank Williams Sr.? Or Patsy Cline?
Would a fan of opera actually spend his or her time going to the store to buy a Megadeth album? Life is too short, there are only so many hours in a persons life they can actually listen to and enjoy music...why waste it on stuff you don't like?
There is no one out there that likes every form of music there is, you may think you do, but trust me, there is always something out there that will make your skin crawl no matter what you like. If you like a particular style or genre of music, don't worry if someone else doesn't like it. Music is a personal thing.
Also, for the couple dozen linux guitarists that are out there: what does everyone out there use to reduce hiss in the incoming guitar signal?
I'm a traditionalist and just mic it off my Twin Reverb and I'm really not standing anywhere near my monitor when I'm playing anyway. But then again, I'm usually playing the LP which has the buckers on it so there is no hum....but when I strap the Tele on I practically have to stand in the next room. But you can't beat that twang!
As I said, I'm a traditionalist and prefer tube to transistor and analog to digital. I just use digital for recording and mixing. But there are SO many different ways you can skin this cat to make the sound you want it's not even funny. I'm getting more and more into it, little by little because too much will blow my mind. I get side-tracked into tangents that go nowhere and waste time...so I try to keep it as simple as my simple mind can grasp.

I don't consider entertainment to be contributing to humanity. It's fleeting at best.
I believe that "some" movies and some forms of entertainment certainly contribute to humanity. They are an artform. And as in all forms of art some of it is pure drivel, yet some of it is quite sublime. Novels, paintings, music and yes, movies all do contribute to humanity. If a novel, painting, piece of music or movie changes the way a person sees the world, or even if it makes them think (wow, what a concept that is), then that in itself contributes to humanity.
But I totally agree with you about sports. They're paid the most, and contribute the least. Why do we hold athletes up high and make them our role models? Athletes can even comit some pretty brutal crimes and STILL people's opinions of them are good because they could run the football up the line, or hit that basket at the last second.
Don't be ridiculous and split hairs like that. Everybody knows that singers and those who create music are called musicians. The obvious point behind your snide posts is "these songs aren't really music, so the people who make it aren't really musicians."
Sorry, but you're wrong. People who are singers are NOT musicians. No one would ever say that. Julie Andrews, Barbra Striesand, Pavarati, Clay Aikin...they're all singers and all talented, yet no one would call them musicians unless they play an instrument.
Also, I never said that hip-hop wasn't music and I never eluded to it. And I'll go on record right now and say that hip-hop IS music. It's a popular music and I personally am the one that can't grasp the appeal. That's my problem...no one elses. But I'm certainly not closed minded about it as I do listen to it and will continue to try to understand it. But I don't make snap judgements about other people...especially ones that hide behind Anonymous Coward posts.
Rappers are more performers than musicians though there are several MCs who can play instruments (Mos Def and Andre 3000 as two quick examples). There isn't much difference between them and a singer except for the fact that most rappers write their own lyrics.
There are plenty of Hip Hop producers who can play. Though much of the music is simple and may not be to your taste, there is nothing in the definition of music that excludes what most rappers rhyme over.
I tend to agree with you on this. Mod this up as it's certainly not a troll.
It's a type of music you claim to hate. If you don't listen to it, how could you possibly think you have anything useful to say about it? This is what is called "talking out of your ass." You sound a lot like a bitter, self-absorbed nerd.
Actually, I DO try to listen to is BECAUSE I still don't get it. I'm not one that judges something if I personally haven't tried it out. And where did I say I hated the music? I don't hate it, I just don't get it yet. I don't see the appeal, but I'm sure the people that are into hip-hop aren't into the music I enjoy.
And how was my post bitter? I was pointing out how they're not really musicians...and they aren't...but more producers. A producer still makes good things, but that doesn't mean they themselves are musicians. A producer can produce music ya know. Alan Parsons comes to mind. Yes, he can noodle around on a keyboard and program a synth, but he really shines as a producer and engineer who mainly got session players to interpret and perform for his Alan Parsons Project.
And to tell the truth, they're also more vocalists too. Again, that's not wrong. But when it's all said and done and broken down, there is little difference between Britney Spears with a band/DJ and Eminem and a band/DJ. Yet they're worlds away.
Just as in other genres, there's huge differences in style and quality between different musicians.
Calling them musicians is laughable. They're more producers than musicians. Which isn't a bad thing really, but it's like calling someone that mows lawns for a living a "stock car driver".
