  1. links on Pennsylvania Supreme Court Tweets Rulings · · Score: 2

These are just links to rulings and opinions on the courts web site, not tweeting the actual details. Nothing to see here. The information itself is as accessible as it always was, although they have provided a marginally more convenient way to access it as soon as it is posted.

  2. Split mini system. Cost effective != cheap install on Cost-Effective Server Room Air Conditioning? · · Score: 1

We had a similar problem. In the long term you need to look at efficiency vs. installation cost.

Running one (or two) large units constantly just for a server room is in the long term quite expensive depending on where you live and how much the cost of electricity goes up. Unless you are in a facility that is staffed 24/7 (and I suspect you are not) there is no reason to do this.

For between $1800 and $3400 you can have a "mini split" system installed which will cool only one room, on its own thermostat and be completely self contained. It can be installed with a small pump to dump moisture out close to the external unit. With a cooling (compressor on) current of 9-10 amps, and 12000Btu of cooling, we are able to keep our (admittedly small) server room at around 65F, which gives more than enough response time for a unit malfunction before the temperature reaches critical levels.

  3. "Free" ad-supported phone, anyone? on Pay-For-Visit Advertising · · Score: 1

Maybe the whole point of this is to offer the phones and service to consumers who don't value their privacy, at no (monetary) cost? Maybe all local area calls are free, and long distance can be enabled by depositing funds to pay-as-you-go.

That way, they can offer phones where the capability to track and report and snoop on the user is built in and cannot be disabled.

Some people are stupid enough to go for it - and they might also be the ones that actually buy the stuff advertised in those wonderfully helpful emails the rest of us ignore as 'spam'. :)

Searching from the address bar is an option in IE7, as it was in IE6 and others before. If you dont like this behavior (regardless of your search engine), just turn it off!

The user still has a little bit of control with this part, unlike Verisigns' overdone version. (for once. Nice of them, innit)

  7. Re:The telcos will adapt on Courts Overturn FCC - Return of the Monopoly? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Exactly. What I see eventually happening, if/when VoIP takes a big wet bite out of the traditional voice service, we will start seeing widespread bandwidth metering, more or less based on the per minute usage/cost of VoIP calls.

Those of us who use their internet connections for other bandwidth hungry applications will have to look around for companies which provide un-metered service - which will further improve their bottom line by reducing their own bandwidth costs.

There's no such thing as 'free'. The only reason we're getting "unlimited" broadband for a reasonable price is that every provider is in a 'land grab' for market share. Once they all have a nice grip on their piece of the market, and all the smaller competitors have been forced out, we will see a concerted effort by all to push the pricing up. (or am i the only one who has noticed the increases in price in satellite/cable tv service over the last few years)

  9. Re:hard drives are cheap on Simple Windows Backup to CD/DVD? · · Score: 2

The RAID solution only works in cases of hardware failure.
In my experience the vast majority of data recovery requirement has been due to user error. With a RAID setup, whilst you have data redundancy, it cannot substitute for backups in cases of accidental deletion and overwrite.

The use of a hard disk(s) as a backup medium, however, has been for me the cheapest and fastest method. Take the backup drives out of the system when you are not actively backing up data.

If you were (as someone already suggested) to use dd under linux to record a complete image of your live partitions to a backup drive, you can instantly be back up in the case of a hardware failure, and then buy a new backup drive as soon as possible.
