ok...normal disclaimers apply here...I don't like stereotypes anymore than the next guy...but hey, they're a fact of life. You can, statistically, boil down a socio economic group to fit certain "patterns" and "trends"...like I said, not good, but usually true...so that's my disclaimer done...now onto my point

I have heard a lot of people talking about how RIAA will shoot themselves in the foot because the economies are changing...ie, people will just not pay $20 for something they can download for $2 (taking into account time costs etc)...and I'm thinking to myself...ok...so what really will happen

Ponder the following...and flame me if you think I'm off my rocker

    1) To download songs...you need internet access, possibly an mp3 player to play them back...relatively technological savy...and the willingness to spend the time on the computer to get them...this to me, says middle to high socio economic (see above disclaimer before flaming)

    2) Combine this with the fact that lower socio economic groups tend to spend more on entertainment (can't back up with specific figures right now...but I think it's a fair statement, and will be backed up by most retailers)

    3) Labels will spend more money promoting artists and genres that give them the greatest returns...that's just common business sense

4)If your album doesn't get promoted by a label, at the moment anyway, you don't make it big as an artist...and your music dissapears apart from a few that 'discovered' you, and play you to their friends at parties

5)If I asked someone at a record company...I'm sure they could tell me exactly what kind of music each different socio economic category listens to (statistically speaking), and indeed, could probably break it down further to gender, race etc...I would also go further, and say that these different categories would have very dissimilar tastes in music....so, here's my thoughts (I'm sure a lot of you can already see where this is going)...

We download music...statistically, all within a few different genres....those genres stop being profitable...those genres stop getting promoted...those genres dissapear and get replaced with different kind of music...that appeals to groups that buy cds.....we bitch about how there's no good music anymore.

so...a question...through free market forces, and economics...are we really just shooting ourselves in the foot (over the long term), by downloading music we like???

(Humorous side note...maybe we should all go download some rap music today...consider it a national service)

However, a couple of years ago I had the misfortune of flying United Airways...I flew first in Business, then economy on the way back (they only had one business seat left and I was travelling with the CEO of the company...hmmmmm, wonder who got it? ;) )...Business class was about as comfortable as QANTAS/Air NZ economy...except you got a little tv (yeah, thanks for that...I can watch seinfeld while I'm writhing in agony)...and economy class...I couldn't believe it...I fully did a double take when I walked in...it was like 10 seats across or something..people were nearly sitting on top of each other, and there was absolutely no room in the isles. Luck I was sitting up the back, in the only 2 seat section, next to a particularly beautiful canadian woman which made the flight 'semi' bearable. If that is what you guys consider good (note your above comment on united)...then you guys really have to fly different airlines. I will _never_ fly united again. The companies didn't take your rights, the companies didn't betray you...if anything, the companies followed _your_ ("your" being the collective american masses) orders...you said you wanted growth, or you wouldn't invest in the company...you said you wanted growth at all costs to protect your 401k, you said you wanted to make money off their stock and get a good dividend...in fact, in the five years prior to 2001, how many of you (american citizens) asked companies to be loyal, patriotic, just and fair...not many...I was in america 97-99...it was insane...everyone you spoke to was going to be a millionaire from their investments...and I have been told that general view was common many years before '97. I worked for a company where a software company (I won't name, but lets just say it bundles installer software that can apparently be used to install your product anywhere ;) ) did this to us. They disabled our liscence...saying we only had a one machine liscence to use the product, and the install builder software had called back to the company supplying two different IP addresses...and thus, had been registered on two different computers.

I found this kind of suspect, because I knew for _sure_ it was only on our build system and that the originals were under lock and key and couldn't have been taken home...so I asked our build engineer to ring them back and ask what the two IP addresses were, so that we could isolate where it had been installed. The first address we were given was the address of the build machine...the second address...you guessed it...127.0.0.1.

We then had to explain to the guy that was handling our compaint why this didn't constitute a licence breach. Now, the serious side...you really want to give someone like this the power to pull the plug on your development system and kill your builds for however many days it takes to get through to someone with a brain? I get really sick of programmers saying how restrictive GPL is, and how it shouldn't be allowed etc etc...a professional programmer just like you created the code that's under GPL and he or she _chose_ to release it that way...that's their right...so there's really nothing you can do about it but abide, or rewrite it. I find it so arrogant that people will take a component that is handed to them for free and get upset because they can't repackage it or wrap it, and on sell it. Bottom line...you have _no_ right to influence the liscensing, or even comment on the liscencing chosen by another programmer for his work unless you're his boss and are paying him for that work.
