    The freedom to study how the program works, and adapt it to your needs (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.

    Naahh, if you are worth your salt you don't need the source code, hell that's for kids!! True hackers only do assembler :)

    Driving is a skill that requires dedicated attention and quick responses to visual stimuli. Providing a mechanism to divert that necessary attention is bad, even when stopped.

    Nahh... I can drive whilst braindead... It's skill just like playing piano or guitar blindfolded. You do it so much it becomes instict.

    I can also surf the net without thinking! So, two things that don't need my attention can be combined!

    I can shift my attention to the skimpy bikinis while I cruise along the beach... Just as usual :)

    Somehow I find it difficult to believe that the tiny LCDs that come with most mobile phones account for a big chunk of their price...

    Fancy this... I hate Perforce, its weird conflict resolution algorithm (too often high on lsd) its horrible interface and the fact that you never know what the hell yours and theirs is supposed to mean!

    CVS never screwed on of my integrations! Then again we should be talking ClearCase...

    I think you'll have *serious* internal communication problems...

    Ever thought that people that dislike meetings might not be entirely right after all...

    Best way to kill a project is not loosing few hours in a metting but not knowing what other people are up to and loosing a global view of the goals.

    In layman terms:
    "Why did you modify that interface? Why didn't you tell me?" etc etc

    Gosh, I hate this... Flashy headlines to get attention and research money!

    No, we are not gonna get that kind of hdd, there is simply no way. The problems of coherence and interference make that impossible. Quantum communication it already very difficult uses all sort of error correcting codes to even be theoretically possible.

    Let's put it that way, some king of information is there, there is virtually no way to put your information there and keep it for more that a few nanoseconds :(

    I wonder if the "Open Source" is picking up the slack in basic research these days. I don't think Universitys have been too productive in my lifetime.

    Now that's way too much to expect. If research was easy surely everyone would win nobel prizes??
    You cannot really expect research to spring up from nowhere just like open source software, the background needed is completely different.
    While becoming a *very* competent developer/architect etc. is withing reach of most smart people around with sweat and hard work, becoming a research is definitely not! Not many people got what it takes and the willpower to gather the knowledge you need just to get started...
    My 2 cents...

    Guys, that's gonna be great. The original anime was shown on italian tv about 10/15 years ago. It was called Kyashan which is phonetically pretty much the same. So, the story is that androids go mad and try to conquer the world (and pretty much succeed) the son of a brilling scientist which collaborated constructing the androids becomes a cyborg to save the world... There are a girl and a dog-cyborg that go around fighting with him... It sounds cheesy but the anime was *great* to say the least. Brilliant. And the trailer makes me hope for the best!!! Man what a news!!! I can't wait!!

    I know this is gonna be unpopular, but this is the result of capitalism being taken to extremis.

    Europe is based on capitalism, sure, but culturally is different and hopefully capitalism will not reach the extremes we see in the USA.

    It's like big corporations and economical lobbies (a small percentage of the population, surely) can dictate the law to a degree which I find scary.

    These kind of agreements are not made to protect the wide public interest but to protect big corporation's sources of income. This is done in ways that will, in the long run, prevent progress and sharing of ideas... Unpopular but I had to say it!

    I disagree, how many of those issues affect real midp2 apps? I never experienced any of those problems, 'cause I never needed those functionalities. The average midp2 developer goes seldom there... Actually my midp are generic. I just tried to install them on Nokias and they just work. This is my experience anyway, I suppose some midp2 apps out there use those functionalities...

    What about OPL?
    It's open source (something we all like), BASIC-like but to me almost a scripting language. Extensible and *very* powerful!

    However, Perl will be welcome, actually *any* language should be welcome.
    Why do you think there should be less development solutions for Symbian OS that say Linux?

    I disagree. I program Nokia phones constantly and I can say that midp2 support is good.

    Forget the tutorials, yes the documentation is often not up to date, however, there are better places to learn midp programming than Nokia tutorials. There is *nothing* Nokia specific to midp programming!

    Point some midp2.0 that works on any phone but a Nokia please? I haven't seen any!

    Bugs in Nokia software? Certainly! Midp2.0 completely broken? No way!

    This is a disturbing trend. It seems that science in the US is undermined by political, economical and social factor, most of which are of arguable intent and nature.

    I do research on security and cryptography related technologies. I'm happy I don't have to deal with this kind of censorship and I wish to express my sympathy for Provos. He's not even american for fuck's sake. And Honeyd is probably used more for protection by admins than by hackers around!

    I wonder, is he gonna get the phd after all??

    Since the advent of 32 bits processors there's been a huge amount of research trying to shrink the space taken by data-structures and similars. I've read of techniques devoted to save a couple of bits in Java classes for instance. Now we get addresses 64 bits long... I guess we can forget all of that... Any thoughts guys? Is it really worth trying to squeeze bits in object code if every 5/10 years processor technogy makes a leap?

    So now terrorists are supposed to use valid XML (with respect to the approved Bin Laden DTD) to arrange bombings and the such. This is a natural step forward since XML is easier to parse and to detect by law enforcement agencies... This IS a joke, right?

    And the above is one of the main reasons I don't bother using KDE or Gnome! In the old days (5 years ago at most!) Linux was snappy like hell, it made windows look like the overbloated beast it is. Now? Well, go figure...

    Indeed, quite to the point. Besides I'm confident that quite a few of us here tried to develop their own chess program (or perhaps just tic-tac-toe?). Once you know the general principles this toys are based upon, it becomes rather difficult to consider them anything else than quick searchers! Nothing new comes out of a machine...
