My neighbors, a mother and her daughter-in-law, work for the same telemarketing company. She told me that they were "getting a new system" to comply with the do-not-call law. What the new system does, according to her, who is the manager of this company btw, is call you at home, then when you answer, a message comes on saying that it is a solicitation call, and tells you about the company, if you don't want to talk, you can hang up. This is just as annoying to me, so who knows if this law will do anything to lower the number of solicitation calls we get.

  10. T-Mobile on Experiences with Alternate Local Phone Companies? · · Score: 3, Informative

I recently bought a Sony Ericcson ti-68 from amazon. It was free after rebates, and it is bluetooth enabled. T-Mobile has an internet service plan that is about $20 for unlimited access, I think. Pair the phone with a blue tooth enabled computer and you get about a 56K connection. I tried it while on vacation, and it worked great with my 12" PowerBook. I don't know if this is feasible with Linux or Windows, but you might look into it.

  11. What's right and wrong. on Lessig And RIAA Answer NewsHour Questions · · Score: 1
First off, I would like /, opinion on this: I have had my CD collection stollen 3 times, about every 3 years. Some CD's I have bought 3, now 4, times. Do I have any right to those songs that I bought before?

    As for this article,

[peer-to-peer] networks these days. Networks like Kazaa, Gnutella, iMesh, Grokster and Morpheus, among others, are encouraging and helping individuals to distribute perfect digital copies of music

First off, mp3's aren't that great to begin with. Secondly, a lot of the songs downloaded are funny versions, or not very good anyway. Third, there has to be some noise that gets into the files as they are tranferred again and again.

Sharing involves lending something to somebody, and while it is on loan, the owner no longer has it.

This does seem to ring true to me.

From an ethical perspective, when individuals engage in illegal copying, they are taking money out of the pockets of all of the people who have put their hard work into making the music.

How much do the artists get from a $15 CD? A lot less than the record label. If they care so much about the artists, then why don't they lower the prices of the CD's? If CD's were $5, there wouldn't be any reason not to buy them.

It is not legal, ethical or cool to copy somebody else's CD for your own use.

WTF does the RIAA know about being cool?

as they develop, the vast majority of uses of P2P technology will be legal.

Do they know that we don't? Will they control what software, therefore, what P2P software, we use?

The DMCA is an embarrassment to copyright law
    Can anymore be said?

There are quite a few ways that these technologies can incorporate safeguards to prevent copyright infringement.
    .
    .
    .
We have asked that the infringements be filtered out of the system.

Who has the final say if a new product meets some safeguard, or if it filters out infringement? Would CD burners ever have gotten to market if they had to incorporate safeguards or limit what they would burn?

The DMCA Anti-Circumvention provision is not intended to stifle technological innovation. Indeed, it is intended to spur it on by creating and protecting business markets for new technologies.

This is such a crock, what do they think, that they can control the technology industry, and that we are stupid enough to believe this horse shit?

That's all the crap I can take in a day. Maybe I will post more tomorrow :-).

I love all 3 of my macs, and I wouldn't trade them for anything. :-) I really didn't mean to have such a bleak outlook, it was kind of late when I wrote the post, and I, being a good student, was slightly inebriated. I am a college student, and I am about to graduate, but the computer science industry, especially here in Denver, is not very strong, and I am thinking about going on to get my Masters. Anyway, what are your guys' views on extended warrenty? I have 1 year parts and labor, but I don't neccessarily have an extra $300. I could have a fund raiser from my family, but I really don't like to do that for something that may or may not be worth it. Is Apple Care worth it?

As far as the heating goes, my AiBook doesn't really get overly hot, I have just read reports of them getting up to 120 F. I love this little PB, even with the wobble, currently I just stuff my screen protector under it, but I don't think that I should have to. I have read the suggestions to "bend" it back into shape, but I'm not brave enough to try that.

  19. Expedia.com Kauai Vacation on Online Travel Agencies? · · Score: 1

I went to Kauai, see http://hompage.mac.com/Kauai2003 for some photos, anyway, I had a great experience with expedia. We paid a little less than $900 per person for room and air from Denver, CO, and we stayed for 8 nights/9 days. We didn't stay at a luxury hotel, but a Hawaiian owned little place. I was right on the beach, one of the quieter and nicer places I have stayed in. They had a website that I checked, and I also searched the web for reviews about the property. I have also purchased Las Vegas weekends from expedia.com, and trips to San Diego as well. I have had nothing but good experience with them, and I think that their pricing is hard to beat, but I do check around before I buy. If you look at the hotel properties in expedia, they usually list the hotel's phone number too, and you can always call them. One more thing is that I have went on numerous trips through expedia, and I have yet to have a reservation problem, I dont even carry my expedia numbers or print outs or anything anymore. One word of warning is avoid hotels.com. I tried to book a room for my father through them, the hotel had no idea he was coming, then his card was charged months later. A few hotel desk employees have told me that they do not like hotels.com, so... Anyway I would go with whoever gives the best deal.
