This would be a really really awesome Xmas gift, I need to make sure my SO knows about it. This is the equivalent of a boxed set of every Woody Allen, Monty Python, and Kids in the Hall. The Far Side is truly the best single-pane comic ever made, Larson is a genius of understatement and subtlety.
All we need now is a complete Bloom County with extra goodies.

Instead of working the extra time to spend $80 - $100 for this, just buy the 5 volumes at $5 - $15 (depends on new or used, paper or hardback) that are already out. You might not get the extra 14 cartoons or the letters, but for the price difference, you get the extra time off (see other story). I love Far Side. One of the five best strips, ever. But no way am I gonna pay that much to get a few extras.
But y'all feel free to go for it...

I still remember my first experience, waiting for my sister-in-law at a book store, I happened to pick up a copy of one of his books and was laughing out loud uncontrollably. She thought it a great gift and got it for me, but Christmas wasn't for 8 months, so her family read and re-read them. I got used Larson Far Side books!
But I have all the rest of his books now, so I'm wondering if my $90 will actually bring me any more than what I have, beside some few extras.
Come back Gary and write a thousand more of the greatest cartoons.

I used to have one of his collections, and there was a big intro written by Larson, talking about his ups and downs cartooning, and some funny anecdotes..
The best one involved the cartoon where a bunch of ants are standing outside the anthill holding a baby, while one screams "You idiots! We'll never get that thing down the hole!"
Apparantly when he first submitted the cartoon, the ants were carrying a grown man. It was rejected as being too macabre and grotesque. Just for grins he redrew it with a baby, and it was accepted..
Another story talked about the "William Tell's unfortunate other son" cartoon, where a kid with an enormous head with a tiny apple on top says "c'mon pop! shoot the apple!"... It got him sued by some Hydrocephelacy (sp?) orginization - the disease that makes your skull grow abnormally large..
There was the "what dogs dream about" cartoon, where millions wrote him to ask "Why is that dog humping that car?"..
In all, the anecdotes were much more entertaining than the comics themselves, of which I find 1 in 100 funny..
Far Side is no Family Circus, but it's pretty good. Notme and Ida Know! ahhahah

I can't be the only person on here who thinks that "The Far Side" has almost no humor value at all. The author seems to try so hard to be funny, but just can't do it. Maybe they just fly over the head of someone who is only 25 years old, but I just cannot find anything to be funny about Far Side. This post is not intended to be flamebait, but I suspect my opinion will be in the minority.

I used to work on the same floor as FarWorks, Inc. in the 2 Union building in Seattle. It took a few months before I realized that they were the Far Side people. They looked pretty normal. But I always had the urge to peek into the back offices, just like Bart Simpson on his visit to Mad Magazine. Ah, the regret...:(
Since retiring, Gary Larson has made 2 Far Side animated anthologies. I can only seem to find them on VHS. Does anyone know if they are available on DVD? Are they any good?

About May in 2001 there was a one panel comic floating about.
It had a few scientists standing in a lab. They were monitoring a small doll-house-style room that contained two mice.
The mice were miserable and the caption was something like "The scientists had come to regret teaching the mice
how to love".
Does anyone know who made this comic? Was it a Far Side? (I don't think so) Would love to see it.
Just maybe, your sense of humor clashes with his?

Barnes and Noble has it in their retail stores for $94.50 for all of us who can't wait for it to ship. The regular price is about $135, but it's 30% now...
For some reason, someone in my family thought I was a Far Side fan, and I kept getting FS books for Christmas every year. But I've read the books, and each book maybe had one funny strip each.
I just don't find most FS strips very amuzing at all. It's not that I don't get the humor/punch line, I do, but I don't find it very humorous. Am I the only one?

It's kinda sad to see it go away now.. I mean, I really enjoyed the Far Side comics and now that this "complete" book has been released, with no more calendars, it just seems like the final nail in the coffin..
I guess it's sort of like how I'll feel when the LOTR trilogy comes to an end. =D

It would be useful to be able to keyword search the captions of all these cartoons so you could find appropriate ones for any given situation. Perhaps someone would provide a reference on line? Otherwise it seems utterly impossible to use unless you set up a whole learning infrastructure along the lines of Bible/Torah studies and have scholars dedicate their lives to studying it. Arguably profitable but..

This is a late comment, so probably nobody will see it, but Amazon's new full-text search feature can be used to search for your favorite Far Side cartoons (and similar things). For example: go to amazon.com and enter "vampcow" as a search term. It will give you a link to Page 6 of one of the Far Side collections which you can click on and it will actually display the scanned page from the book with the cartoon.
