"RunBot currently walks around the edge of a circular room and is connected the centre of the room by a boom. But Wörgötter plans to develop a freestanding version next, and thinks it should be straightforward because the boom has only a small influence on its ability to walk."
This whole thing is not impressive. That thing would never walk on it's own if it didn't have that arm holding it up. I think I've seen things like that made out of wood and sold at craft fairs...
"The general membership of the Nazi Party, known as the Partei Mitglieder, mainly consisted of the urban and rural lower middle classes. 7% belonged to the upper class, another 7% were peasants, 35% were industrial workers and 51% were what can be described as middle class. The >>>largest single occupational group was elementary school teachers. Nazi Party membership was a requirement for all persons holding public service jobs; thus, all teachers were forced to become Party members.
When the Nazi Party began in the 1920s, it averaged 2000 members. When the Nazi Party came to power in 1933, party membership had risen to 2.5 million. In 1945, when the Nazi Party was disbanded, official membership rolls listed a total of 8.5 million."
That would be a membership of ~13% of the population. This doesn't factor in members of the hitler youth or babies. Also, originally members of the wehrmacht(german army) were required to resign from the nazi party before joining, to make it a nonpolitical force. Although at some point this stopped getting followed so much, there would have been plenty of the 9.5 million in arms that were not members of the party. No it's not all, or nearly all, but the point which is not contingent upon 100% membership still remains. The point is that a lot of seemingly innocent people(e.g. all school teachers, all policemen) were in the nazi party. I'm not sure but I'm guessing that train conductors, being public employees would also have been required to be nazis. Even though many people feel the republicans are just as bad, it would innaccurate to compare the grip that the republicans have on american society with the grip that the nazi's had on germany. All civic life was taken over by the NSDAP. EVERYTHING was national socialized, sewing clubs became national socialist sewing clubs. Yes they are both called political partys but the nazi's had a much broader vision than the republicans do. The nazi's had to take over all economic, political and social organizations and apparatuses, whereas the republicans need only be concerned with controlling the State because everything else is already controlled by their masters, the corporate elites. The nazi's were servants to no one(no one but hitler, that is). That guys not an idiot for saying that all germans were nazis, though a better thing to say would have been "Every german in a position of authority or stature, no matter how small, was a member of the national socialist party."
This last new years day I observed a man breaking into cars in a parking lot, I called the police to tell them and when they asked me for my address and all I could provide was the neareast intersection(I slept over at someone's apartment) they told me to find out the address and then call them back.
Microsoft shows us that you can not worry about security AND still make a profit. They practically invented FUD to deal with the potential backlash from their piss poor security and their unwillingness to deal with it.

Feruguson does not understand the way that the law works in the United States. The US government has the LEGAL authority to tell them not to disclose something that they have done if was for national security purposes.
"I'm not sure where the "businesses are evil if they make a profit" meme on Slashdot comes from (and this isn't pointed at the parent poster), but this is a gentle reminder that if ISPs can't make money, they're going to go under... and then where will all the geeks get their p0rn?:o)"
The meme comes from all the immoral and ammoral things that businesses do. Where have you been living? It's not profits which make ISPs possible, it's maintaining enough revenue to meet operating expenses that does. The problem people have is with businesses that make insane amounts over their necessary income. A differentation should be made between making reasonable profits and making unreasonable profits. But anyway, I don't see a problem with ISPs trying to jack up their prices, it will just drive people to work around it...with adhoc wireless networks, community owned backbones, cat5 to your neighbor, etc The issue is that with "tiered internet" they would be destroying the decentralized, less hierarchical nature that allowed the internet to grow to what it is today. If the internet is just going to be a content delivery platform for megacorps then that would be fine.
You're talking to this guy like he's a moron/little kid, but if you(or they) can't see how not having your servers crash, not getting hacked and getting it for free isn't better than constant crashing, constant hacking and losing hundreds of thousands of dollars then who's the moron? There's nothing to talk about. Stop pretending like executive officers are these perfect beings with rationality granted by the Gods, they clearly have their heads up their ass.
your house is burning down:
"Well, now wait a second, let's not start trying to put the fire out just yet. First lets look at the total cost of ownership of the house, then let's look at the cost to put the fire out... you have to factor in the cost of water, the cost of fuel, the cost to the environment of producing a large fire truck, possible disability payments to the fireman etc. If we can't come up with hard numbers about the total cost savings if we put the fire out then we aren't doing our jobs as homeowners."
When will opensource pussys stop trying to suck up to the powers that be? Who gives a shit if they get rich off of your cool no charge software--it's them that will get rich, not some IT dork. These are the same people who sit around and talk emotionally about the direction of their company when the company(the executives and share holders) would fire them without a moment's notice if they thought it would make them an extra few dollars.
Free Software Forever
Assuming that you DO use drugs:
buy a large quantity and split it between your friends
don't do wake and bake. you'll use less if you wait a couple hours after waking up before getting high
grow your own
use a vaporizer, you won't destroy most of the THC by burning it
saving money on alcohol:
get some of those fake credit cards they send out for promotions and start a tab on it at a busy bar
brew and distill your own liquor
buy malt liquor
saving money on cigarettes:
roll your own or buy a tobacco injector to use with prerolled tubes
go to bars where tobacco company reps give away free cigarettes
first they called it netscape(which was mosaic), then they change it's name to mozilla, then firefox, and now it's called sea monkey? and it's always the same, just a web browser...nothing amazing.
we're pretty much fucked.

yeah, but with all the error correction(i.e. sending multiple sperm with the same message) that drops WAY down.
This last new years day I observed a man breaking into cars in a parking lot, I called the police to tell them and when they asked me for my address and all I could provide was the neareast intersection(I slept over at someone's apartment) they told me to find out the address and then call them back.
hahaha, the ol' "keith richards uses a lot of drugs" joke. That one just gets better and better.
Why do you write email when you could just write letters? Why read slashdot when you could go to a bar or restaurant?

ROFL
wow, you're *SO* knowledgeable!
How could you be so naive as to think that Niels Fergusons' pride could keep the US government or MS from doing anything?
LOL

You're talking in one breath about NEW businesses and then the next about SMALL businesses. They are two different things.

Selling software in retail stores is just an outmoded distribution model...
let me sum up what you said: "they renamed firefox and thunderbird"
