For shits and giggles, have a look at the phone costs and plans. It's fun for the whole family. BTW, I only pick on them because I am using them at the moment, albeit, not for their data plans.

There have been options as well for students/employees to pay a $20 fee for a license for XP/Vista/whathaveyou. It may be something worth looking into. Granted, I reimage Linux and Windows boxes but that doesn't really make a difference. Then again, if money is no object, there are plenty of Firewire enclosures out there for 2.5" drives and a good, fast, 7200rpm drive you should look at would probably be at the Seagate website. I would start there just based on their warranties to get an idea of what you can get. get ahold of resellers in your area to find out prices.

I feel that shipping early with a ton of bugs is a lot worse then shipping when ou feel everything is as sorted as it's going to get. No one is going to write a complicateed piece of software and not have bugs in it, but at least they can ship and minimise any possible showstoppers they would have if they were up against the wall with a ship date. Frankly, certain companies should think about this as well when announcing release dates or leaking info. Most everyone would like to have a polished product no matter how long they have to wait and, ultimately, where investors are involved, they will see fatter wallets from a successful, bug free launch then they will from a half-assed launch where everyone gives the product a bad name in the first month.

It is and has been an excellent product and I'm sure we'll get nothing less on the quality side in the future, be it free or for money. I for one would buy their product if they decided to sell a Plus version and would still use their free version as well just to give them a bit more support. I'm a LOUSY programmer for the most part so I have had no way of helping them through code but I'm sure there are plenty of decent coders out there that could have helped, have used their product, and either didn't bother or were going to get around to it eventually. We have ourselves to blame if we think this is some kind of punishment (which it isn't).

Ok, I'm done with my rant. I guess the only thing left to say is to keep your chins up and keep up the excellent work and their are plenty of people out there whom do and will continue to support you, even if it does go to a pure commercial product (which no one has said that it will).

This is the main thing that has Symantec frothing at the mouth. If MS were simply fixing their software instead of putting the band-aid manufatcurers on the back foot, there wouldn't be a problem. As it is, they are giving you some keys to an MS car, telling you to drive wherever you want, and when you do bang it up, offering a free fixup. It may not be as good as the others but, who cares? Ah, but there lies the difference. In Mac OSX (regular OSX users can correct me on this) and in Linux (or BSD) distributions the bundling is of seperate apps which may or may not depend on parts of the OS and can be seperated from the OS as a whole. For Linux and *BSD, you don't HAVE to use Firefox if you use a certain Window Manager, in OSX you don't HAVE to use Safari if you don't wish to (and I think you can choose not to install it or at least get rid of it). In WinXP, you HAVE to keep IE on the system for functionality. In the *nix's and OSX you don't HAVE to use or even keep the media players provided to you but you HAVE to keep WMP (insert version here) in order to keep functionality. For anyone game enough to have a play, pickup a copy of nLite (use Google as I'm too lazy, tired, and sick to put the address in at the moment), make up a new reduced ISO with said items removed, and see what you can and can't do. You will walk away with what MS is trying to sell developing countries as a reduced edition which is barely useful for anything. What I'm saying is you don't have to libraries to the apps. If they would have tied the apps to the libraries, none of this would be an issue. Ok, I'm done with my incoherent rant and bad spelling...

Maybe with even more critical eyes they can clean up some of the code and clean up some of the security (without the marketting beauracracy holding it back). But, you know what? It's NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!!!! Why on EARTH would they open up Windows? Why would they open up Office? Opening CIFS/SMB? That would do worlds of good but again, why would they? Now, opening up IE would be a major coup and would probably win some added seats for them. Not that they are necessarily hurting now, but it would/could open up huge doors for them on alternative operating systems. Opening up DirectX. That would be good as well, although not for them. All I'm trying to say is, they will never, EVER open up anything that is anywhere near a money maker for them, especially their two flagship products.

The fact that you have to download around 2 1/2 gig worth of images (CD or DVD) just to get a desktop is a bit silly. For those of us that just don't care (I download the DVD images anyway)it's not a big deal. Going on a little rant, maybe Apple could lighten up on people making "aquaesque" themes for their WM's and shells and possibly sponsor some of these people to make, I don't know, time limited demos or full shell replacements to get people used to the look and feel of OS X. Hey, you never know, you may get more converts. This would be similar to IBM giving away the Workplace Shell replacement on Windows way back when before the launch of Warp (or was it after). I actually did get some people converted to OS/2 by using the shell instead of the tinker toy that was Program Manager in Win 3.1.
