  1. "Dramatic" and "stunning" or "shock and awe"? on Benetton Says No to RFIDs ... For Now · · Score: 0, Troll

I'm shocked and awed at this /. post. Come on...last I checked, one had the option to buy or not to buy clothes from Benetton. I'd hardly call this announcement a big deal one way or another, and it certainly did not "stun" me.

  3. Re:Gold? on Windows 2003 Going Gold · · Score: 2, Funny

It means a company is ready to profit heavily from it's software. The roots of the phrase "going gold" can be traced back to the first Crusade, when Pope Urban II, tired of having to cow the French nobility to action, declared that he was immediately ready to "go gold," i.e. reap massive profits from those less powerful (and early adopters). Software companies picked up the term shortly thereafter.

  6. Web design & UIs on Safari Beta Updated · · Score: 1

Web Design and UI's are not equal. Maybe not, but from a marketing perspective it's a good idea to keep the web design and UI as closely aligned as possible. Hence, the abandoning of Garamond font on apple.com and the frequent tinkering with the "candy-ness" of the tabs across the top as colored iMacs faded out and translucence became all the rage.

  7. "It shows what a farce the Oscars are." on Oscar Nominations (LotR, Spirited Away, and more) · · Score: 2, Insightful

I think Forrest Gump took care of that in '94. Those amazon reviews are awful. Has it occurred to any of those reviewers that the large, unwieldy nature of Gangs was perhaps intentional? I can agree that Cameron Diaz's performance was weak and even that Leo was distracting (though he was much better than I expected), but to criticise Scorcese's use of foreshadowing, characterization, and plot construction implies a serious lack of audience attention.

  8. You're just sour on Gangs of New York because... on Oscar Nominations (LotR, Spirited Away, and more) · · Score: 2, Insightful

    it wasn't anime.

If you hurry, you might be able to get one in time to save Valentine's Day.

  10. So can we expect accidental DoSing? on Bush Orders Guidelines for Cyber-Warfare · · Score: 2, Funny

So can we now expect accidental hacking of the Chinese embassy, Canadian soldiers, and the occasional civilian wedding to occur in conjunction with the more traditional (but increasingly obsolete) accidental smart bombing?

  11. Simpsons is dead in the water if EW is covering it on 300 Episodes of the Simpsons · · Score: 5, Funny

The fact that The Simpsons is getting hype from Entertainment Weekly further proves this show lost its satrical bite (and relevance) a LONG time ago.

  13. Re:Sympathy on World's Most Annoying IE Toolbar · · Score: 1

Even if you could get the word out to the casual internet user that there are great browsers like Phoenix & Mozilla out there, how do you expect everyone to realize that Internet Explorer is the culprit that allows these toolbars/spywares to be installed? It's awfully easy to scream "don't use IE!" at these people, but that doesn't really address the problem. I think the real problem is educating the casual interneter as to why IE is such a bad idea.
